I was referring to the clearing out of rucks, which we don't do well enough and tie in the back row, slowing down any ball coming back, if we don't turn it over. I have no illusions that any of our forwards can offload the ball into a tackle, but first things first.
Southern teams hold autumn supremacy 09:45am on 30 Nov 2009 Sorry Tom, but you cannot excuse Argentina for being understrength and then go on to ignore the catalogue of injuries that England have - particularly in the front 5. This fits in with Odorrach's point about committing players to the breakdown. With the first choice front 5, the back row stay out of the brakdown and it gives the game a chance. Currently the likes of Moody and Croft spend too much of their time winning the ball on the ground to act as the link to the backs.

As for the Six Nations, Ireland look head and shoulders above the rest.
England one-day player ratings 09:55am on 21 Sep 2009 I'd have Bresnan a point higher - I think he's come out of the series broadly in credit with some tight bowling and adds some solidity to the lower middle order.

Shah and Bopara have got to the stage where they have been given a fair run at this and have been found wanting. Bopara in particular has been really disappointing inthe field, where he used to be one of the better fielders in the game.

As for Luke Wright - he seems to be playing to the team orders, which may need to be looked at. He's no Flintoff, but unlike Bopara, he does seem to have the stomach for the fight and is thus worth persevering with.
England player ratings 09:19am on 09 May 2009 Bresnan's a tricky one. He did everything asked of him, but that wasn't very much. He batted well until getting a shocking decision. He bowled well against the two WI batsmen who showed any sort of fight when finally called upon and fielded well taking a decent catch.

He's still likely to be the player to make way for the returning Freddie, but undoubtedly deserves another run out at Durham and could have a busy summer ahead of him.

Harmison's return is looking much less likely than it was four days ago.

As most have said, Armitage and Croft (along with Ryan Jones and Mike Blair) are very unlucky not to make the trip. However, I wouldn't be surprised if Croft ends up playing in the final test having joined the team on standby.

Cipriani was rushed back unfit by England in the Autumn. Missing this tour could do him the world of good and I'd expect him to go to Argentina and be back to the player we hoped he'd be next season.
Mallett's mad experiment backfires 10:05am on 08 Feb 2009 Difficult to tell, so poor were Italy in the first half that it is likely that England's intensity level dropped. You can only beat what's in front of you after all.

However, Goode was poor and that meant that the backs got slow ball which they couldn't do anything with.

Agreed Kahn won't beat Marquez, but by the end of the year he will be the only lightweight in Khan's path.

With the rate of progression I think we'll see from Kahn now he's basing himself in the US to train, he'll have a version of the world title by the end of 2009 and a Kahn - Marquez fight is what we'll be looking forward to in 2010.
Boxing in 2009 2:54pm on 02 Jan 2009 Good stuff Dirsy. I'd add Joe Calzaghe and Lennox Lewis to the list of boxers I don't want to see again this year. legends the pair of them and let's keep it that way.

I'd like to see Haye have one more fight at Heavy before Klitscho, but clearly that's not going to happen. Haye can win, because Klitscho may not land a punch. It's good to see a bit of excitement back in the Heavyweights though.

One more Brit prediction. Amir Khan to be World Champ by the end of the year. The loss could well have been the best thing to happen to him.
Six to watch in 2009 11:10am on 01 Jan 2009 I don't get why people keep mentioning Joe Denly. He was poor last season in a team that got relegated. He needs a big season this year if he is to be seen as a future England contender.
