That's quite a brash statement. If you looked into it properly I'm sure you'd find that a number of footballers and other professionals give well over one weeks wage to charity.

It has nothing to do with missing the amount of cash, its the desire to do something good with it.

If a player wants to keep every penny he earns, let him. Would you be happy if you were forced to give away your money to a cause you aren't interested in?
Cash n Grab 4:20pm on 15 Jul 2009 Regarding John Terry, I am absolutely astonished that he hasn't quashed any association with Man City. If I were a Chelsea fan I'd want rid of him. Based on his non-response the guy clearly has no passion, allegiance or conviction to Chelsea or football; he is only interested in cash. How he can possibly remain the England captain and be a shining example to the rest of the squad if he goes to Man City?
Barry gets England talking 3:13pm on 03 Jun 2009 Why must it be that there is always a presumption that money is the main lure for all players wanting to change clubs? This blog goes even one step further to demand that Barry admit the alegation! It's ridiculous!

Who has the better chance of playing Champions League football in the 2010/2011 season, Aston Villa or Manchester City? Manchester City, clearly.

And please can we stop using the excuse "But Manchester City aren't even in the Europa League!" By spirit, neither are Aston Villa, lets not forget that Martin O'Neill rested virtually every first team player in the Uefa Cup last season to concentrate on achieving 4th in the Premier League, did he not stop to think what might happen if they didn't finish 4th? Clearly Aston Villa can not expect any one of their players to give their all for the Europa League as their manager sees it as unimportant. The lure of Uefa Europa League football can hardly be used as a serious reason for Barry to stay.

Clearly, the option for Barry was Manchester City or stay; given that ultimatum and the fact that he will be 29 by next summer, I believe he has chosen very wisely.

Regarding Xabi Alonso, it has been widely reported that he is very keen on seeing out his contract with Liverpool, not that he is "disaffected". The only speculation that has arisen is the interest of Real Madrid and that of Carlo Ancelotti.

You can come out with figures all day long to try and argue a point, but there are only one set of figures that are relevant to today's success. The cost of the current squad.

Man Utd's squad - £206,000,000
Liverpool's squad - £126,000,000

To say Liverpool have spent more in 5 years might be true, but it doesn't tell the full story. Liverpool have bought and sold (often for profit) numerous players during that period, but the figures so often displayed don't show the amount that Liverpool have re-couped and there fore used to fund other transfers.

The cost of the current squad is the only true figure to consider in attempting to compare expenditure with success.

One point about the bbc coverage is that if people cared to compare the bbc to other public broadcasters around the world, they would realise that the bbc is relatively excellent.

That said though, Gary Linekar is attrocious. His desperation to add a comment because he thinks he knows something about what a professional is talking about is nothing short of cringeworthy. He successfully ruins every interview he attempts to conduct by interrupting with nonsense. He should stick to the footy before he destroys any kind of positive reception he receives from the public.

The best player and the best all round player are two very different arguments.

For me, Gerd Mueller would be the first name on any team sheet because he simply scores the most goals and that wins games and championships.

He certainly isn't the best all round player, but as a striker there isn't anyone even close to him. His record speaks louder than any other.

I wouldn't want 11 all round players in a team, I'd want the best for each position; and for his position he's the best.

If we're talking goals per game you need to consider Gerd Mueller. Generally ignored because of his nationality, his goal scoring record is second to none:

68 goals in 62 games for West Germany
398 goals in 453 games for Bayern Munich

Remember that this was in a much more recent period (the 70's) when football was very different to the 30's and 40's.

He is the best goalscorer ever and in my opinion his record will never be bettered.
Benitez and Scolari face vital test 3:56pm on 30 Jan 2009 I seem to remember Steven Gerrard being a little more than tired during the 2006 FA Cup final against West Ham. In fact he had cramp in both legs and could barely walk, yet he managed to score a 37 yard goal in stoppage time and then play 30 minutes of extra time before scoring in the penalty shoot out.

The FA Cup final was important to Benitez, so regardless of his fitness Gerrard continued to play. If the Wigan league game was as important to Benitez as it is to Liverpool fans, Gerrard would have finished the game. It wasn't so he was subbed off.

Benitez has one flaw alone, and that is his inability to manage a team through a league campaign, his strength is in knock out tournaments where he can focus on one or two games at a time. But to focus on a full league campaign while adjusting to his resources, he finds completely impossible.
