Premier League "Team of the Noughties" 8:38pm on 30 Dec 2009 By your own criteria Phil of a PREMIER LEAGUE XI, i don't see how you can mention Carragher and Hyppia in the same breathe as Ferdinand, so you definitely made the right choice there.

In terms of the league Lampard takes it over Gerrard... who leaves his best performances we know for the cup competitions, Lampard is so prolific.

Van Nistelrooy must also get a mention.

Man U won 6 times to Chelsea and Arsenals 2 in the noughties. I think everyone you mentioned was a great footballer, but for a Prem XI most would be United players for me and definitely no Liverpool players, who incidently boast 2x 2nds and 3 x 3rds in the noughties.

By the same criteria Veron, having been great at the start of the decade, dipped but has come back stronger and showed his class in the twilight of his career. A special player, that could produce magic.

I don't like Mascherano much as a player, but can't really think of anyone else who'd come up above him for the anchor role, maybe Battaglia or Gago
A European team for the 'noughties' 8:56pm on 21 Dec 2009 Good blog Phil, top teams of the decade are always subjective... and so i'll put my two cents in... i'd have Raul over Torres... Torres has achieved the very recent Euro result, but he was backed by the brilliant Xavi and Iniesta...

I'd also put Zambrotta in over Ramos. Zambrotta has not only been around for more of the decade, but been consistent.

Some good footballers miss out, i think most notable are Seedorf, Buffon and Nesta

Whilst Makelele and Shevchenko suffer in this list by not retiring in their prime. While in fact for the most part they had a fantastic decade. Ditto Viera.
The other Rooney 09:14am on 10 Dec 2009 I'd be happy for anyone to take John Rooney from us, the money from selling John Parkin has run out and it'll fund the new stadium announced today... and he's no better than anything else we have (hype is all in the name), only problem we've got is Bencherif (he's a far better player)maybe out for sometime and we need cover.
Ferguson's kids are all right 10:51am on 02 Dec 2009 Somebody also claimed that United have bought in most of their talent, and not home grown any... but Johnny Evans and Darren Fletcher were home-grown... and among the best in the Premiership in my opinion! It is a production line, of solid players.

Like i said, most of the Arsenal players coming through seem to lack the stomach for the battle.

It is also interesting to note that down the East Lancs probably one of the best home-grown talents in decades $tevie G is approaching the twilight of his career, and their isn't even a sniff of anyone getting close to coming through.
Ferguson's kids are all right 10:44am on 02 Dec 2009 Anderson is only 21!!! It is very easy to forget that fact.

What i like most about Gibson, is his confidence to take shots on from outside the area, in such a short career he has already scored some stunners. Also, unlike Arsenal's kids, he has a bit of power and bite about him.

United, were starting to lack that ability to score from nowhere, and distance, that Scholes often provided, and no doubt C.Ronaldo did. It is very rare to see United score from outside the area these days, that's what i enjoyed last night.

One thing i never liked about Fergies youth policy, was that he'd throw them all in, in one go, which is harder for the player coming through, as they are playing and recieving passes from people finding their feet also, it is important to have the players to dig you out around you whilst you find your feet. Last night the balance was right, and although rightly the kids get the praise, Vidic was immense once more.

Phil McNulty Q&A 4:26pm on 11 Nov 2009 Phil, now you have backed down on the Liverpool winning the league point, which both yourself and Hansen seemed to base on Liverpool's form towards the end of the season and Man Utd's losing Ronaldo. i.e. Overlooking the Chelsea factor who as a Utd fan i see as the team to beat every season... I have two questions to pose:

1, Who will win the league? do you agree Chelsea are the team to beat?
2, Will Liverpool make the CL places?

And two points on keepers, Harper for England, and Reina is good but it is only because he is more highlighted (i.e. has more to do) than the others you mentioned, i personally believe there is no better keeper than Freidel in the league, but i'm glad VDS is back.
Haye does what he has to do 12:12pm on 09 Nov 2009 Haye had a game plan, stuck to it and it paid dividends, and he rocked the big man in the final round. My only criticism was that he didn't gof or the bigger shots and combo's at least a round earlier, because i had it scored a lot closer then the judges (except obviously the one who scored the draw). But anyway, he did it, and i wasn't a judge. Haye looked classy yet possibly over defensive, Valuev hugely one dimensional.

I think this has worked very much in Haye's favour... he'll get a pay day against Ruiz (and hopefully not have to up his share of the kitty with trash talk) and then next stop Klitschko, now that will be a fight, and if he wins that then i'll bow down.

I have to say though, despite the above that Haye is my favourite boxer currently and is a breath of fresh air to the heavyweight division.
