Holiday club fraud 10:29am on 22 Oct 2008 I'm generally against further intergration but not automatically against any EU led proposal and feel that the European parliament move here is very worthwhile.

However, as I understand it most of the more blatant scams in the timeshare/holiday club industry are based in Spain so if the Spanish Government was concerned about the issue it could do much more to protect consumers itself - but if most of the victims are British it seems that the political will is not there.

Nearly all posters believe that a business blog is not the forum to discuss this matter - which is why the debate on the issue itself is being conducted on Nick Robinson's blog.

#152 . I doubt many, if any, of the posters are here at Tory HQ's request - I know I'm certainly not. I'd be just as agitated by Mr Peston's line in this matter if he'd blogged regarding Lib Dem/Labour affairs in this manner. By taking an ad hoc line in reporting on such matters his motives have the right to be questioned.
Rothschild v Osborne 11:39am on 21 Oct 2008 Even ignoring the fact that this story is outside your brief, Robert, it is a classic case of Westminster navel gazing.

No money changed hands and therefore the story has no other substance other than a game of Politician/Tycoon semantics.

This seems to be the first instance of you straying into simply political stories so if you are to avoid potentially justified claims of political bias please explain why you haven't quoted your Rothschilds contacts in relation to the Mandelson side of the story? Either both are relevant to your brief or, as I believe, neither are.

I think you want to go and have a lie down as you are mixing several issues when coming to your conclusion.

The profits fall is due write offs as explained in other posts - the day to day business has done well and that means that the figures should look that much better next year (any bets on a 20% increase in profits).

LloydsTSB may well have increased their mortgage share on the back of people switching lenders but that it still real new business for them!

I do broadly agree with your view on how far the housing market may need to fall before it becomes affordable to first time buyers. However with LTSB's low overall LTV ration this shouldn't prove a problem as a credit risk and the vast majority of borrowers will keep servicing the debt regardles of their property value position.

Why is the bank's claim of free banking any different to the statement made on BBC TV and radio shows 'Call free on 0800....'? In this instance it is our pre-paid licence fee funding the calls.

Perhaps Robert you could do an expose on such BBC shananigans!
Rape: A complex crime 1:55pm on 09 Jul 2008 I can only make my view on reported cases but it would appear that no matter how good the investigation team are it often comes down to the word of both parties as to whether sex was consensual or not.

In a judicial system that requires proof beyond reasonable doubt how can a jury be expected to convict in such cases? It is not, as I have heard some women support groups suggest, a case of taking the man's evidence over the woman rather that if both statements are taken equally then the case certainly hasn't been proved to the required standard.
Soros shorts UK 12:32pm on 20 May 2008 I'm afraid that John from Hendon's (post 1) idea that we should be in the euro zone would only make matters worse.

The euro would not protect us from our housing market, dependence on the financial services sector or personal indebtedness. However, we would also be subject to lower interest rates (which would stoke up house prices and the demand for debt) and not have the flexibility for our exchange rate to fall to an attractive level for our exporters or companies wishing to invest in the UK.
