SPOTY 2009 starts to take shape 12:57pm on 03 Sep 2009 Far to early to be considering this award. Especially considering that some of the potential contenders are not even close to winning their respective Championships.

Also the list of contender: Andrew Flintoff/Stuart Broad? Why?

Currently for me the Contenders are: Jessica Ennis, Catriona Matthew, Bradley Wiggins (contenious because I find difficult rewarding 4th place), Mark Cavandish, Karl Froch, Phillips Idowu, potentially Jenson Button, Tom Daley, Andrew Strauss.

Team of the Year: Difficult really to chose and not many teams have stood out with the possible exception of Brawn GP. OH, let me revise this statement with the Englands Women Cricket team.

Overseas: Nailed on Bolt.

Finally, I wish they would change this award to Sports achievement of the year. Also is it not time that both men and women are given seperate awards.
The shining lights of Crystal Palace 2:16pm on 27 Jul 2009 On current form I can only see one individual medal being won at these World Championships.

However, with 3 weeks to go the likes of Orhurugu and Idowu have the opportunity to find the form that will make them medal contenders.

I would predict that the medals will come from the following:

Jessica Ennis - Gold - Heptathlon
Christine Ohuruogu - Silver/Bronze - Women 400m
Philips Idowu - Silver/Bronze - Triple Jump
Mens 4 x 400m - Relay (Outside Jamica and US we have good depth)
Paula Radcliffe - Gold/Silver/Bronze - If Fit - Womens Marathon

I believe we may get a number of potential finalists including:

Emily Freeman - Womens 200m
Nicola Sanders - Womens 400m
Andy Turner - Mens 110m Hurdles
Greg Rutherford/Chris Tomlinson - Long Jump
Germaine Mason - Men High Jump (potential medalist)
Jemma Simpson/Jenny Meadows - Womens 800m
Steph Twell (if selected)/ Lisa Dobrisky/Charlene Thomas/Hannah England (if selected) (all 3 are potential medalists - really depend on the tatics of the race)
Andy Baddley - Mens 1500m - (potential medalist - depends on his tatics)
Simeon Williamson/Dwain Chambers (if selected) - Mens 100m
Helen Clitheroe - Women Steeplechase
Mo Farah - Mens 5000 - (potential medalist - racing against Ethiopians and Kenyans will be tough)
David Greene - Mens 400mh
Elidh Child/Sheiks Drayton - Woments 400mh
Goldie Sayers - Womens Javelin (potential medalist)
Womens 4 x 400m (potential medalists)
Mens 4 x 100m (potential medalists)
Michael Bingham - Mens 400m
Kate Denison - Womens Pole Vault

Here are my thoughts:

a. Anyone, unless injured/given dispensation, not attending the National Trials automatically forfits the right to compete at the major events.
b. First 3 past the post, as long as they meet the recognised "B" standard for their event should be picked automatically.
c. Where an athlete has been injured/given dispensation has recorded "A" or "B" standard time they should be considered but only if they are a strong contender in there respective event.

I believe the time has come to have leaner and stronger teams. This will give athletes a more pragmatic view of what is need to be right at the top of there respective events.

Selection policies can be very complicated but ultimately Athletes are in the business to win and I believe, nov, it is pointless taking athletes to major events to make up the numbers.
Brits in pieces 10:46am on 25 Jun 2009 A bit harsh to some degree but I agree with the overall points.

Take your logic and apply it to football where 4th place earns you millions of pounds. Are Arsenal worthy of such exalted status.

Bottom line to be the best you have to work for it. The LTA time for developing talent in this country must come to an end and soon because in the 25 years I have followed tennis they have only produced one world class player.

It is also time for the cycling mentallity. If you are not good enough get out and give someone else a go.

Harsh but the reality of sport is like that. Few people remember 2nd placers and the time of reaching the 1st and 2nd round mentality needs changing and changing now.
In which direction will the helicopter head? 08:37am on 22 May 2009 As usual the only thing going on in Scottish Football is the Old Firm.

It is a shame that the Press do not focus their attentions elsewhere as both clubs are totally undeserving of the press lavished on them. Also bear in mind that both teams are dreadful and pale imitations of what a Scottish Champion should be.

As for Chick Brown and BBC Rangers it is hardly surprising that he wastes his precious time as he and his type are a symptom of the cancer which prevails through Scottish Football. .

Fianlly, the mose important games in Scotland does not happen on Sunday but takes place on Saturday. The winner of these games will ensure survival for another year whilst the other team could easily go out of business. That is the real story of Scottish Football this season not the lavish undeserved column inches wasted on the Old Firm. The one line synopsis give by The Chick is nothing short of embarassing and disgraceful. As usual the Fans of these clubs are treated with utter disdain by a Old Firm writer and supporter.
European pair set sights on majors 1:40pm on 12 May 2009 Point to be made here is if Tiger does get his game "together" then surely noboby will get near him. It is an indication of how high he sets the bar that a top 10 position is just not good enough. 99% of the golfers out there would trade everything they have to be a 70% Tiger as that usually means making the cut and being in contention every week.

Trust if Tiger gets it right then like Tennis (Nadal) the rest should bother turning up. As for Tigers next appearance it is likely to be the Byron Nelson.

Afterall considering the amount of money spent to bolster the squad and the resources available surely reaching the CL Final and winning the Premiership is a minimum requirement.

So I ask was last nights result a good one for European Football. My own view is NO.

I believe the CL and PL is due for a complete revamp and it is now time for Salary Caps and limits on squad numbers to bring a level of genuine competition back into football.
Old Firm departure would be ruinous 5:24pm on 21 Apr 2009 Little doubt in my mind that this will happen. T

However, the Scottish Government and the Strathclyde Police should make it clear to both clubs that if they want to play in England they do with out the consent of both their organisations and also the vast majority of the Scottish public.

If they want to play in England they should sell up and move lock, stock and barrell down south. NO HALFWAY HOUSE approach should be allowed, accepted or tolerated. Do English clubs really want the nasty nature of the Old Firm Fans to enter their grounds!!!!!

Also the ramifications are huge. If the Old Firm do go then it means the UEFA and Fifa will have grounds to force football in the UK to come under one Federation and trust me it will not be the SFA, IFA or the WFA who will take the lead.

So the question is for both old firm clubs and there respective fans do you want to abandon history, bearing in mind everything does come to an end eventually, or will you be content on staying the best of a limited crop. Losing the revenue from Europe will would mean that your finances would be further stretched by a move down south. Rangers are already struggling financially.

Lets make no mistake this all about money nothing else. As for the Scottish game we will find our own level regardless if the Old Firm play in our league or not.
Desperate times as Rusedski plots return 12:34pm on 25 Jan 2009 It is time the LTA be disbanned due to the fact they have not produced any top quality players for year (except Henman).

Rudesdki and Murray came through different systems.

LTA does not work it is just hopeless.
Hugely respected, much admired... but loved? 1:29pm on 13 Jan 2009 Lets not kid ourselves.

Hayden was an average player in medicore times.

His best scores were made against average attacks and when he faced a genuine top class attack he was nowhere like 2005 and 2008/9.

Anyone who talks of Hayden in the same breadth as the genuinely great openers like Boycott, Gooch, Greenidge and Haynes is insulting these genuinely great players.

I am no fan of a player whose career has be formed against so many weak sides over the last decade.
