Comedy Extra: Never Mind the Buzzcocks / The Thick of It

2009 has been a great year for comedy with a raft
of exciting new shows airing on BBC Two. And digital viewers in the mood
to tickle the red buttons on their remotes have been able to keep the laughter
going after the programmes have finished.

The latest shows to get the BBC Red Button treatment are Never Mind the
Buzzcocks and The Thick of It.

Buzzcocks recently returned to our screens with added Noel Fielding.
Now, following the Wednesday night show and selected other evenings throughout
November, Noel and fellow team captain Phill Jupitus will be stepping out
from behind their buzzers to debate an Issue of Cultural Importance for
BBC Red Button. Discussions to date have the revolved around the relative
merits of Brian Ferry and ferries, and just who is the greatest: legendary
      glam-rockers Wizzard or, er, wizards.

Armando Ianucci's BAFTA winning political comedy The Thick of It
is also back for eight brand new episodes when, once again, the Prime Minister's
Director of Communications, played by Peter Capaldi, will be fighting the
fires caused by The Department of Social Affairs and Citizenship. Digital
viewers will be able to access exclusive additional content following each
      episode.

The Danny Baker Show on BBC Radio 5 live

the BBC Radio 5 live studios to give viewers a glimpse behind the scenes
of the 606 football phone-in show last year, Danny Baker and Tim Lovejoy
were among the presenters. Now Danny's back with his Saturday morning show
for the 2009/2010 football season and the cameras are continuing to roll!

As well as seeing the man himself (possibly wearing his favourite pirate
hat), digital viewers pressing the red button can send in texts and pictures
      to be shown on screen.
These will be accompanied by all the great content you might expect from
5 live: the weekend's football tables, fixture lists, upcoming commentaries,
sports news and details of upcoming Red Button content. Plus, look out for
some rather more unexpected content: spoof fixtures and unique animations
as Danny sets up audience head-to-heads on the phone.

Brett Spencer, Interactive Editor at 5 live, discusses the visualisation
in more depth on the station's blog.
adventure may have noticed something new under the red button recently.
That's because our CBeebies service has just seen a radical overhaul launching
visitors into a big, bright and fun new world.

So what has changed?
Well, your children's favourite characters are now at the heart of the CBeebies
interactive TV experience. A big, new and bright carousel now welcomes you
into the service giving you easy access to games, other children's interactive
services such as karaoke or quizzes, birthdays and star of the week messages.

Different Games
Reflecting the popularity of games for the young audience, a new range of
activities has been specially created. The updated service brings with it
brand new games for some of the most popular shows on CBeebies, including
In The Night Garden and The Green Balloon Club. These new
games replace the old ones, which had become increasingly outdated.

Satellite, cable and digital terrestrial viewers will have slightly different
offerings from one another. This has enabled us to offer the best games
tailored to each system. Cable viewers will see the changes soon.

BBC Children's producer Damian Vicary discusses the service on the Press
      Red blog.

Digital
viewers will be able to access exclusive additional content following each
      episode.
of the 606 football phone-in show last year, Danny Baker and Tim Lovejoy
were among the presenters.

Plus, look out for
some rather more unexpected content: spoof fixtures and unique animations
as Danny sets up audience head-to-heads on the phone.

adventure may have noticed something new under the red button recently.

Hit the North

The BBC's move to MediacityUK in Salford in 2011 has had plenty of coverage in the news throughout the year, but maybe a footnote glossed over thus far is that the TV Platforms Group, the department responsible for the Red Button service, is one of the teams in-scope to relocate to BBC North's flagship headquarters.

While not as headline generating as the proposed moves of BBC Sport, Children's or Learning departments it represents both a significant challenge and lofty ambition in equal parts.

The discussion as to why the BBC needs to move some key departments North could fill a few posts on its own so I shall steer away from the general debate and instead focus on what it means for the TV Platforms team and the Red Button service.

It's certainly an exciting time in the Digital TV field, with Digital Switch Over in full swing, BBC iPlayer already on Virgin Media and now full screen via the Internet and the emergence of IPTV as a technology all coming direct to your living room.

As the team behind the Red Button service and with our colleagues in R&D we have been behind numerous innovations, but perhaps the biggest opportunity to unlock the potential of truly interactive TV is that presented by IPTV. The new generation of televisions, set-top-boxes and games consoles are starting to demonstrate what is possible when traditional TV converges with content and functionality previously associated with the Internet. The result has to be so much more than previous 'Web on TV' experiences, instead, as the viewer is more than likely watching a big screen in a communal location, it has to offer a tailored experience to match. By having additional content delivered or streamed via a broadband connection, the traditional limitations of the broadcast model are to a degree circumnavigated and to the viewer this may well provide a whole host of additional choice, involvement with and enjoyment of BBC content in new and exciting ways.

Building a centre of expertise in IPTV and a hub for 'Future TV' development is one of the key goals behind our move north. These provide stern challenges for ourselves and the region, so taking the bull by the horns, we have already set up an advance team in Manchester to tackle them. As a Northerner myself, and after 10 years in London, I've recently moved to Manchester in order to lead this advance team. We are going to be spending time on honing our requirements, growing relationships and refining our ways of working to become a more collaborative organisation from day one in Salford which will hopefully enable us to become everything that the new BBC North is about.

The downside of the move is that a number of highly skilled staff who have seen us through significant technical obstacles, launches and transformations have chosen not to make the physical journey North, a decision I know that was not taken lightly. So between now and 2011 there will be a lot of changes happening within our department which will include sadly saying goodbye to some of the team but also welcoming new team members on board.

The journey continues with us starting to understand how the Red Button must re-invent itself in anticipation of these technological developments and changes in audience needs. We are focused on building connections and partnerships with local industry and academia, to tap into some of that rich heritage that the North has of developing interactive entertainment. In addition, the chance to work towards creating job and skills opportunities in the North, enhancing its Digital economy and to see it become a real alternative to London is a fantastic challenge.

It promises to be an exciting journey and the team here and I will endeavour to keep you updated on our progress but in the meantime we'd be very interested in your views on our move north.

Digital
viewers will be able to access exclusive additional content following each
      episode.
of the 606 football phone-in show last year, Danny Baker and Tim Lovejoy
were among the presenters.

Plus, look out for
some rather more unexpected content: spoof fixtures and unique animations
as Danny sets up audience head-to-heads on the phone.

adventure may have noticed something new under the red button recently.

      Red blog.

Welcome to BBC iD

Earlier this week, our comments login system changed to use the new BBC iD. Hopefully you've managed to update your details.

Next week BBC iD will be rolled out on the rest of the BBC's blogs, and over on the BBC Internet Blog, Ian Hunter, explains more about the changes and why they are being made:

BBC iD is the new sign in system for BBC Online. It's currently being rolled out across all services that require a user to register or sign in.

On Monday November 2nd we'll be switching all of the BBC's blogs to BBC iD from the previous BBC membership system. And in the New Year our message boards and other communities will be heading down the same route.

Changes to this blog

If you comment on this blog then you may notice some changes. This is because the login system used for the comments is changing to a new BBC sign in system called BBC iD.

BBC iD is already in use on some other services, including the BBC iPlayer message board. All the BBC's blogs will be upgrading next week, and a small number of blogs, including Press Red, are upgrading this week to allow the technical team to ensure everything works smoothly.

If you've not registered with BBC iD before, you will be prompted to do so when you sign in. The process is relatively simple - just follow the instructions on screen.

Once you've upgraded your account, you will be able to comment on this blog as normal. Your old login will also continue to work as normal for other BBC services that have not yet been migrated.

There will be more information on BBC iD on the BBC Internet Blog later this week. In the meantime do leave your feedback in the comments below.

Changes to BBC Sport on the red button

Ben Gallop writes

Next week the BBC will be making some changes to the Freeview service which will have an impact on our sports coverage.

My colleague Rahul Chakkara, who runs the red button platform for the BBC, has explained on his blog that High Definition is being launched on Freeview.

We know from the feedback we get that HD is increasingly popular with sports fans and this development will mean that even more viewers get to watch BBC Sport's big events in the best possible quality. Next year promises to be a big year for sport - the World Cup, Wimbledon and the Open golf will all now be broadcast in HD on Freeview.

Follow-Up to BBC Red Button Changes on Freeview

It's been a few days now since I posted the news that on Tuesday 27th October we'll be closing two of the interactive streams on the BBC Red Button on Freeview to make way for free-to-air HD coming to the platform. Lots of you have commented with a wide range of opinions and I wanted to get back to you on a few of the main topics.

Firstly I can absolutely understand why some of you disagree with these changes. It affects the content you love to watch, and I want to reassure you that we are doing everything we can in conjunction with our colleagues in Sport to schedule events to ensure that we try and accommodate all the major sporting events on Freeview; that we continue to provide schedule information online and this is made available to TV listings magazines to help you know when which sport is on and to remind you that BBC Sport video available via the Red Button is also available on BBC Online/Sport.

During major events we will also look to free up bandwidth available to the BBC across Freeview as we did during the Summer Olympics in 2008.

Regarding why we chose these two streams to switch off, simply, of the streams available to us, these two were the ones deemed to present programming that could be made available elsewhere across the BBC's channels.

HD is becoming the next broadcasting standard as more programmes are being made in HD and more people own HD ready televisions. The BBC along with the DCMS, Ofcom and other public service broadcasters are helping to lead HD development in the UK so that audiences will be able to enjoy the benefits of HD content.

HD is already available on satellite and cable platforms. Freeview is the only platform without the BBC's HD content. It was felt important that it also offered viewers HD channels both from the BBC and from other broadcasters. Initially only those in the areas where digital switchover has happened will be able to access Freeview HD, but it will be nationwide by 2012 and we hope that some areas in the UK will be able to offer it sooner than that. We made the decision not to continue running these streams in areas which are yet to have digital switchover because, while technically it would be possible, editorially we can't run two different services in different parts of the country.

This does mean that for a time between now and 2012 when switchover is completed there will be some unused spectrum covering parts of the UK on the multiplexes we own. We're sub-leasing that in order to make sure we are getting maximum value for money.

I hope this gives a bit more clarity on why we've made the decisions we have and what's happening in the future on BBC Red Button. In all decisions involving trade offs some will be disappointed. I recognise these disappointments and can reassure you that my team is looking at some of the emerging technologies to deliver content.

In the meantime we will continue to deliver a good service on the Red Button. This week on Freeview I hope you'll enjoy Electric Proms 2009, which has Robbie Williams, Dizzee Rascal, Doves and Shirley Bassey as just some of the names appearing in concert behind the red button.

Closing the News Multiscreen

Pete Clifton writes...

As you may have read elsewhere, the BBC and other broadcasters are currently working to provide HD channels on Freeview.

Nothing comes for free though, and inevitably, this means that the BBC's existing Freeview service has had to change to help accommodate HD.

It's been a busy time for Freeview users, with them recently being asked to re-tune their TVs or set-top boxes as part of a country-wide rearrangement of broadcast transmissions. Now at the end of October, the BBC will have less room to broadcast interactive TV on Freeview. More details on this are provided here.

For BBC News, this means that we're no longer going to be able to provide one of our services.

The News Multiscreen, which we've been broadcasting on Freeview for a number of years now, will close on Tuesday 27 October 2009.

BBC Red Button Changes on Freeview

As Controller of the BBC Red Button service, I have to look at what's available for viewers on the service and balance it with the BBC's full digital aspirations. This sometimes means I have to make hard decisions about what we do and what we can offer to our audience.

From October 27th, Freeview viewers will see some changes to the BBC Red Button service that is part of a government backed UK strategy to bring HD broadcast channels to a wider audience, first announced by Ofcom back in 2008.

In order to make space for HD broadcasts in the future we need to now switch off two of the three interactive streams we use to deliver BBC content on Freeview. This means that Freeview viewers will no longer be able to see the BBC News Multiscreen and the interactive stream (known as 302) will also cease to be used for Red Button content.

So what does that mean for you watching on Freeview? Well, we will still bring you coverage of sport, music and entertainment events like Wimbledon, Winter Olympics and Glastonbury.

Red Button will still help you navigate to this content even if it is now available via linear BBC channels rather than via 302.

And whereas before we have run Red Button content in long loops, meaning it is repeated frequently, we will now be scheduling shorter runs to make sure we fit in as much content as possible into the remaining space we have - no more CBBC extra runs through the middle of the night!

To ensure that you can find this BBC content available behind the Red Button we will also be providing better scheduling information to TV listings magazines and improve our on screen now and next information so you can set your Personal Video Recorders to record this content.

Content from the BBC News Multiscreen will remain available on BBC Red Button on Sky, Virgin and BBC Online and Tiscali. My colleague Pete Clifton has written about that in more detail today on the BBC Editors Blog. Like him, I recognise that some viewers will be disappointed they cannot view the News Multiscreen anymore however a broad range of news text pages remains accessible on Red Button; while the BBC News Channel provides frequent summaries of the day's main stories and weather updates.

So why now? Well Freeview HD transmissions will begin in December 2009 in the Granada and London regions so we have to carry out technical work to clear the BBC's multiplexes where all of our channels are played out. Freeview HD will be available to viewers when the first Freeview HD digital boxes hit the shops in early 2010. More on this from Freeview themselves.

We are looking at some of the emerging technologies to explore innovative ways of delivering the services we have taken off. I would welcome your ideas and thoughts on this.

of exciting new shows airing on BBC Two.

Now, following the Thursday night show and selected other evenings throughout

Digital
viewers will be able to access exclusive additional content following each
      episode.

the BBC Radio 5 live studios to give viewers a glimpse behind the scenes
of the 606 football phone-in show last year, Danny Baker and Tim Lovejoy
were among the presenters. Now Danny's back with his Saturday morning show
for the new football season and the cameras are continuing to roll!

Brett Spencer, Interactive Editor at 5 live, discusses the visualisation

adventure may have noticed something new under the red button recently.

- Football: Friday Focus / Final Score / The Football League Show*
With the 2009/10 season football season in full swing, here at BBC Red Button
we won't taking our eyes off the ball with a host of programming to keep
fans up to date with the action until the silverware is lifted in May.
Mark Lawrenson kicks things off each Friday afternoon as he shares his predictions
for the weekend in Friday Focus.
While on Saturday itself the Final Score team will be on hand to monitor
the afternoon's action to keep viewers up to date with all the goals as
      they go in.
BBC Red Button will also be replaying action from The Championship and Leagues
One and Two in The League Football on Sunday mornings with Manish Bhasin
and Steve Claridge rounding up the goals and debate.
Lawro's Friday Focus: Friday evenings/Saturday mornings

- Live Championship Football: Derby v QPR
In addition to our regular football offering BBC Red Button will be showing
live coverage of Match of the Day's featured Championship match between
Derby County and Queen's Park Rangers with an additional audio option.
BBC Red Button will be bringing coverage of an exciting 2009 Formula 1 season
to a close with the usual array of interactive options available during
the Brazilian and Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekends. F1 fans can customise their
viewing experience via the red button with access to all on-track sessions
including Friday and Saturday practice and qualifying with re-runs of classic
GPs also available in the build-up to the main event.
On race day itself a choice of three streams will be available featuring
split-screen in-car camera feeds, leaderboards and rolling highlights, with
the option to listen to either network or BBC Radio 5 Live commentary. After
the end of each race on BBC One there will be an additional interactive
programme analysing the weekend's events and picking up views from the paddock

What do you really think of us?

Since our Red Button blog appeared you have been great at feeding back to us about what you like and don't like; what works well and what doesn't and we've enjoyed the fact that you want the best out of the Red Button service as much as we do!

Now you have the chance to tell others how you feel and to influence what we do in 2010 and beyond!

The BBC Trust, the BBC's governing body, is holding a public consultation about BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Four and BBC Red Button. Go to BBC Trust website to have your say.

It's the Trust's job to get the best out of the BBC for licence fee payers. One of the ways they do this is by carrying out an in-depth review of each of the BBC's services at least once every five years. They're currently reviewing the BBC Red Button, and they'd like to know your views.

We have a published remit, captured in a Service Licence, which is also published on the BBC Trust website. It's where we set out our stall about what content we will show on Red Button and how we intend to promote the very best of the BBC's values.

You more than most understand what you can find behind the BBC Red Button service: continuous and constantly updated news, information, education and entertainment for all digital TV audiences, offering interactive video, audio, pictures and text. But how well do you think we are doing and how do you want to see us innovate as technology in your TV develops?

The public consultation is now open and runs until Friday 18th December. The BBC Trust would like to know:

How often do you use the BBC's red button and how do you access it?

If you have used Ceefax, how well do you think BBC Red Button works as a digital replacement for the Ceefax text service?

BBC Red Button is meant to offer continuously updated news, information, education and entertainment. How well do you think BBC Red Button does this?

If you have pressed the Red Button to access extra coverage of sports (e.g. Wimbledon, Formula One, Olympics) music events (Glastonbury, The Proms, one off concerts etc) or supporting services for entertainment programmes such as Strictly Come Dancing or Eurovision, what do you think of this programming?

How easy do you find it to use the BBC's Red Button service?

What do you think would make the BBC Red Button service better?

If you'd like to take part, the easiest way to do this is by visiting the BBC Trust website and filling in the online questionnaire.

If you prefer you can also write to them at:

BBC Trust Red Button Service Review
BBC Trust
180 Great Portland Street
London W1W 5QZ

Or you can call 0800 0680 116 for more information.

It's 10 years since we started on this journey of bringing interactive TV to the great British public and we truly believe that we offer viewers innovative content and the opportunity to engage with the very best of enhanced BBC television and radio programming.

We hope that we find messages of support as well as ones outlining how we can improve the service and we look forward to seeing your comments published by the BBC Trust in 2010.

and they like nothing better than solving mathematical problems!
Now for the first time they're dropping in to BBC Red Button to help younger
viewers develop their maths skills, knowledge and understanding.

Children are invited to grab their remote controls and watch clips from

the BBC Radio 5 live studios to give viewers a glimpse behind the scenes
of the 606 football phone-in show last year, Danny Baker and Tim Lovejoy
were among the presenters. Now Danny's back with his Saturday morning show
for the new football season and the cameras are continuing to roll!

Plus, look out for
some rather more unexpected content: spoof fixtures and unique animations
as Danny sets up audience head-to-heads on the phone.

of exciting new shows airing on BBC Two. And digital viewers in the mood
to tickle the red buttons on their remotes have been able to keep the laughter
going after the programmes have finished.

adventure may have noticed something new under the red button recently.
