The Upshares CD: Hurry if you want one.

Post categories:

Eddie Mair | 11:07 UK time, Wednesday, 20 October 2010

This morning's mail:hundreds more.

Yesterday's trickle of letters has become something of a deluge. We only ordered a thousand CDs so if you want one...hurry!

The CD contains virtually every piece of the Upshares Downshares music sent in by our listeners and broadcast between May 2009 and January 2010. It also contains some bonus tracks, including an interview with the music's composer Sandy Faris and a number of previously unheard renditions. And each CD has a full track listing for all 89 tracks - a total of an hour and twenty minutes.

It's be on sale only from us, only on CD and only until November the 19th. Each CD costs ten pounds including postage and packing. At least five pounds of this will go to BBC Children in Need. Five pounds is the guaranteed minimum - the more we sell, the greater the proportion of money will go to Children in Need, and of course we'll report back to you on how much money we raise.

HOW DO I GET ONE?

To get a CD send a cheque or postal order for ten pounds to "Upshares Downshares, Room G601, BBC TV Centre, London W12 7RJ". The cheque or postal order should be made out to Children In Need Appeal. And very important this, please don't forget to clearly include your own name and address so we can send you the CD.

Yours for ten pounds

Here's a great idea for a new feature... Updeficit Downdeficit. You could use the Upstairs Downstairs music as a theme tune, you know Eddie, the one from that drama series of the 70's.
You could even invite listeners to record their own version of the theme each day and send them in. Sorry that would be a ridiculous idea.
Off to search for a bit torrent of the CD!

The cheque's in the post Eddie. Knew I should have hand-delivered! Is there a case for rationing I wonder.........?

Seriously though - excellent to see the response and here's hoping it'll raise a shedload for Children in Need!

Big Sister @ 4 - you're right! Eddie said that in his post at 17.25 on Monday (sorry, don't know how to post links to other threads!). Let's hope there are many future pressings to come - might make any "first editions" even more valuable in years to come (as well as raise excellent amounts of money for Children in Need of course :-))

I noticed a comment on our alternative glassbox.

This was yesterdays which was very warm and cheery from Eric Downstairs:

    Hello,
In a tribute to the postal service, the cheques for Upshares CDs have already begun to arrive: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/pm/2010/10/the_upshares_downshares_cd_the.shtml

If you'd like to buy one, there are many more details on the link above, but if like me, you're far too busy to faff about clicking links, here are the details in a nutshell:

1: Send a cheque or postal order for ten pounds to "Upshares Downshares, Room G601, BBC TV Centre, London W12 7RJ".

2: The cheque or postal order should be made out to Children In Need Appeal.

3: Don't forget to include YOUR name and address.

I listened to the CD last night. When my headache eventually cleared, I was struck by the musical dexterity of our listeners, and their generosity in taking part in this venture for Children In Need. Each CD has a full track listing and some bonus items never heard on the radio. And in the case of the version played by Nils and me, let's hope it never WILL be heard on the radio.

I know newsletter subscribers are a generous lot. Please buy a copy.

In the programme tonight, defence, Wayne Rooney, Kevin Connolly in Florida and the strikes in France.

See you on the ice at 5,

    Eric Downstairs

What Eric may have forgotten is that he and Nils will have to go and see Mr Wogan to announce how much they have made. On TV! And while they are there they may as well take part in the News Presenters Song that seems to have become a Children in Need Favourite.

Is it my imagination or is the blog getting much less coverage / fewer mentions on the programme these days? And why so few comments? It's feeling like an almost-deserted building where echoing corridors stretch away into the distance, a few doors left open with bits of paper blowing about, light patches showing on the carpet where some of the fixtures have been removed (glass boxes, for instance). Soon all the tenants will have left and then the building can be torn down for a redevelopment opportunity.
