The AM Glass Box.
Good morning.
You may have read your morning paper and listened to the radio, and have some ideas you want to hear on PM tonight.
Perhaps a question about something in the news you would like answered - or better still, direct experience of something topical. Or maybe there's an aspect to a big story you haven't heard explored that you would like to hear.
The PM team will meet in a real glass box at 11am. Why not be part of the meeting by sharing your thoughts in this virtual glass box?

Isn't the real problem with all the controversy over Nick Griffin appearing on Question Time, the fact that he will probably have more credibility in the public eyes than the other 'kettle calling tea pot' politicians who are prepared to appear with him? I'm thinking of expenses, phoney second and third directorships that pay tens of thousands for a couple of weeks work a year so that private companies can gain immoral political access and influence, and where the crooks in the house might have somewhere to go when they get kicked out of parliament. I'm thinking of the family friendly cronyism of MPs employment policies, I'm thinking of the the working holidays in exotic locations under the auspice of parliamentary reseach, I'm talking of the fact that 7% of privileged people have 70% of political influence. But then I have been told I have a big chip on my shoulder.

I laughed out loud this morning - thank you world. It was a statement reported from the UNited States after a meeting with Hillary Clinton. Or rather the last bit of the statement - allegedly. I took it down Eddie and used it in my mental callisthenics but that later.

Sorry about that. I pressed the red button instead of the Preview one. Oops. But I heard Thought for the Day but hey!
Where was I? Oh yes. "..are well understood in the United States!" Wonderful choice of words and believe me I know whom they are allegedly well understood by! My goodness this is a Question Time free zone as far as I am concerned.
Subject: FOR STEALING WAYWARD BALLS – THE MINISTER WITHOUT RESPONSIBILITY – MISTER BURNS – ARE WELL UNDERSTOOD IN THE UNITED STATES – MISTER BURNS - AND I WILL BE WITH YOU
Anagram: LAW GRILLS DNA – FEW BAA STORY – SIR BURN MET – MET BURNS SIR – A HURT UNITED NATIONS DELETED – SO WRESTLES - PROHIBIT MOI? SERENITY. I WHITTLE. STUNS – BY LAW I LIE WHODUNIT
So. How about that Man Utd result then? Did Sir Alex - allegely behave himself? He lives in the present you know? I heard it on the Radio. Gaga me! lol

Quite!
How are we ever going to challenge them if we never get the chance of hearing what they truly believe in public debate? Personally, I find their presence unnerving and the core membership even more unnerving. I find Griffin and co espousing one thing, then, we covertly hear what appear to be racist and other phobic attitudes and beliefs from the core membership and even Griffin himself! Lets challenge them in open debate and expose the supposed hypocrisy. Our democracy should be strong enough to defend itself shouldn't it!? If not, theres probably something more seriously with it than the BMP's existence.

Nick Griffin/ Question time: We live in a democracy and a world of free speech and that means that we sometimes have to listen to things we don't want to hear or don't like. Thankfully, that democracy also allows us to switch our TV's/radios off.
Royal Mail strike: Two words for the leaders of the CWU - Arthur Scargill!

Good morning btw.
I tried to reply, got modded for speaking negatively (but truthfully) about what I'd seen filmed covertly on the tele about the party in question. Maybe you saw my comments before it was disappeared?

Edward. I just checked on that so called British Bill Of Rights spate.
Oh I say! The vehemence!
I am not a politician either but something on PM - along the couldn't be identified Postman Pat (oops - sorry Pat!) lines please before I make up my mind on its virtues or otherwise. "One must never be too hasty" - Bernard Cribbins - Hole In the (middle of the ) Ground song. The hasty one got buried as I recall. Or did I misremember?
Complain about this comment
I did. Mis-remember. It was Cribbin's Right Said Fred song. And look what allegedly "Too Sexy for my.." that ditty produced! No offence.

FJD - please don't go. Your first point is well made. If establishment politicians are discredited as a result of their actions then others, not always desirable, may prosper. As for your second point, I do hope it was not referred simply for being critical of the BNP. I think the mods will have to be exceptionally watchful today against inappropriate or orchestrated referrals.

I used to be an avid watcher of "Question Time" but stopped making the effort a long time ago. Unless there were certain people I wanted to hear. I actually prefer "Any Questions". AQ has only 4 guests and only the person asking the question gets to respond, this means that more questions get asked and the programme moves at faster pace. QT on the other hand has to many people on the panel some of whom are celebs.
However, Qt has had unelected leaders of pressure groups, unelected spokespeople from religions (some of whom are homophobic, or mysogynist), some one from the green party (they have no MP's). So it is simply wrong to refuse the BNP from Question Time, it's as simple as that.
Nick Griffin may be odious, but a lot of people find Alex Salmond odious and he represents a party that wants to speak for less than 10% of the licence payers. If the BBC feels comfortable having Welsh, Scottish or Irish nationalists on then you cannot deny the British Nationalist Party the same opportunity to express their views.

Actually, the BNP don't have much credibility in areas where they have elected councillors - they're renowned for taking the money and not going to the meetings.

I'd like the PM team to look at the issue of whether Radio 4 is being covertly highjacked to beef up the image of David Cameron. Returning from a brief holiday last night, we heard the third episode of Conserving What? on Radio 4 in which, according to the blurb, "Peter Oborne discovers where David Cameron sits in Conservatism's intellectual tradition". I could hardly believe my ears as I listened to it since it seemed to this listener like an unashamed plug for Mr. Cameron by a sycophantic journalist and sounded more like a party political broadcast than an objective discussion about Cameron's ideology.
I presume that the Beeb will be broadcasting similar series about the LibDems and the Labour Party in order to ensure some balance is maintained? Next thing we know Mr. Griffin (see elsewhere) will be demanding three 15 minute programmes to set out the BNP agenda.

We will not know where he sits within conservatism until after the election. Only then will he know who his backbenchers are and so how rightwing he will have to be to stay as leader.
Remember Thatcher, her pre 1979 image was not what she was post-election.
What Shamron says at conference is "conference speak". I have learnt over the years that what gets standing ovations at conference does not work in reality. Remember; short-sharp-shock as a cure for yob culture. Quietly dropped when the media's attention was else where because it was a FAILURE. Never to be mentioned again. The same will happen with Shamron. Yes the BBC has been soft on the Tories since Shamron become leader.

Looternite: No, of course we won't - we never know exactly where any party leader sits until they are in a position to press the buttons of power. Nonetheless, my main point here is that the Case for Cameron was being shamelessly made on Radio 4 in a series of programmes dedicated to the Conservative Party. I detected very strong bias, and I seem to recall that this goes against the BBC Charter.

I fully agree with you regarding Tory bias at the BBC.
You may have read my previous posts regarding the "Today" programme and their Evan Davis's soft interviews of the Tories during their conference.

Bias? That R4 'profile' on Brown's wife? There's more of her on the No. 10 website when I was there looking to sign e-petitions.
It's like Cherie? I don't care about their spouses. We don't vote for spouses and we don't employ them. Gordon is her hero? What's that got to with the price of fish?

The Tories seem to think that every CWU member is a baby eating militant.
If Ken Clark wants Royal Mail privatised, or partially privatised why don't they coerce one of the taxpayer owned banks to buy a stake in Royal Mail?
Sir Fred Goodwin was a cost stripper before being allowed to run a bank without any banking qualifications. Perhaps he could be parachuted into Royal Mail?
Modernisation is cycle couriers? Mail is going backwards not forwards.
Apologies for posting here, I thought the nice snow topped postbox thread may have been abandoned.

Why have I only heard the charge "Misconduct in public office" in relation to the WPC who was moonlighting as an escort and then sent to prison.
Can someone explain why if dogs are at Heathrow sniffing nanograms of drugs why doesnt the Bristish Army have packs to fan out in front of the troops sniffing out those old shells and IED's in the desert heat, any old dog could smell them and the people who planted them.

The Telegraph have reported Gordon Brown's comments on the postal strike, a verbatim extract is :
"This strike is soluble and I believe that management and the workforce can reach a solution to this and they should do this as quickly as possible."
'The strike is soluble'... interesting

three things: from Ms Pithy writer...
1 Eddie The blog site is getting too complicated - or is it me? It took me ages to find my way here - why can't we have everything on one board please?
2 Nick Griffin on Question Time.... I was looking forward to 'hearing' it (here in Paris) as I got confused not realising that it was on the Telly. (the confusion is that two Dimblebees are involved in similar progs I think) Now I discover that even though I am a license payer who is sometimes abroad, I can't hear (see)it. Couldn't progs like this be simultaneously transmitted, especially as it is such a one off? i.e. goes out live on radio so 'foreigners' can hear - like last night of the Proms which I heard here in fact? The thing is most of our BBC news stuff is so so staid and safe and therefore almost useless in terms of moving us onwards and upwards. I am hoping that (unlike with New Labour with heavies employed to stop it ha!) that there might be a bit of heckling allowed or even a bit of a heated punch up? Let's frighten the horses more with a bit of passion allowed on these progs - on PM and Today too.
3 there is a PM thread on The Choice is Yours Radio 4 message board at present. here's the link.
