Eddie Mair | 10:59 UK time, Thursday, 22 October 2009

"I only just managed to change to radio 3 to avoid that racket and it suddenly struck me that an acquaintance of mine has a party piece where he burps that theme tune and maybe if I asked him nicely he might record it for you. please let me know if you think it's not too high brow for your program"

Obviously we said yes please and are now waiting for the mp3

    Having the segment called "up-shares" with a pointless theme tune reminds me of the classic story of the emperor’s new clothes. Someone at some point will tell the producers of PM that it is poo!

    The 'Big Ben Bongs' are being dropped, and about time too !!

    Maybe the Big Boy Burps will be far less 'London Centric' [only 12% of the population live there, fact fans...] and manage down the numbers of trendy metropolitan types listening to Radio 4.

    @3 - you've misread the article.

    Big Ben's Bongs are being retained - it's the clockface that's disappearing.

    Oh, and the article makes the classic mistake of believing the clock itself is Big Ben. That name only applies to the bell responsible for the bongs.

    This would be interesting - not one of the better ones for the programme, I guess. I don't mind the bad ones - it's only a few seconds, after all!

    Am I the only person who is not so outraged by senior civil servants earning 100,000? They did not cause the financial crisis, they work for us rather than just for themselves. Is anything going to be served by finding out their names? Do we know the names of bankers getting more than 1m in bonuses - whipping the wrong bad horse?

    Eddie, Would that be a Radio Burp instead of a TV Burp?

    It will be a real shame to lose the Upshares/Downshares slot once this little economic blip is declared officially over next month.

    I won't miss the music particularly, although sometimes ... sometimes ... it is darn fine.

    But the short, what is it, two or three minute? slot is certainly the most most cogent decription of the day's business affairs broadcast on BBC Radio (excluding Business Daily from the World Service which I used to enjoy in Zambia).

    So keep Nils and his summaries please, though not as important as the weather forecast, this spot is certainly more important (to me) than the latest political quibbles.

    It's a very appreciated spot in the programme and deserves longevity, at the very least for the fact that it gives an opportunity for some form of banter between equals that can never be found in the interview and allows your listener, me, to laugh without guilt or frustration.
