Interesting - so the generation that has replaced growing up with 'Listen with Mother' with gadgetry can no longer take information in through its ears. Has this actually been tested, or is it just being assumed? Having said that, perhaps the court room should have a large overhead screen with the advocate's words scrolling across - what? across CCTV images of the defendant caught in action?

Oh Eddie, why 'listen for a long time' when you can go straight for a 'knee-jerk' predictable response from the Daily Mail..

You should worry when you get my attention, Eddie. I enjoyed Jury Service but it got to a point when I felt I was on their speed dial - did they have speed dials back then (1970-80s)?
I really do listen when I can be bovvered and wonder why it has taken so long to produce programmes like Lie to Me and The Mentalist. But wonder if a good listener "turned bad" could turn even these fictional detectives' radars off as to accuracy of information heard or seen?
Lt Columbo (Peter Falk) use to hone straight into the character "whodunnit" but seemed to skip the listening to 'em first part completely - dah! - and at the end of each episode who needed a jury or lawyers. "I did it alright, guvernor!"
So one of my favourites speakers (OTHER favourites if Sequin reads this stuff) came onto the screen an hour or so ago and had my full attention. First Class delivery if I may say so - without someone else going POSTAL on us? lol

Funnily enough I was just having this conversation: I suggested that, if one were to take a contemporary episode of, say, Coronation Street, and one 20 years old, the latter would have half the number of camera-shots. The corollary was; that younger people have adapted to a faster rate of change in the media that I find irritating. And, further, that this may correlate with a decreased inclination towards games and toys like Meccano that require sustained, patient attention.

That was the major premise - the minor was this; There are many important tasks, occasions and personal rewards that require sustained attention.

So - if Judge Judge's comments turn out to be correct, it is not just the jury system that'll have to change. I'd suggest it would be better to change the media and methods of education so that children receive an education of sustained attention.
