Just heard Martha Kearney's report from New York and she was magnificent.
[Now, Eric, where did you hide that iron rod?>]

Dear Mr. Mair reading your PM newsletter did I detect a whiff of humour? In the light of the BBC 4 programme last night, you are supposed to be dour and revel in your misery. Or has your life as an immigrant in England turned you away from your Calvanist tendancy. What would Knox say?
Complain about this comment
By the way I meant BBC 4 television. They are having an Anglophobic pro-Scottish week.

Sad to hear of Keith Floyd's death.
Strange, after seeing the C4 (?) programme last night.
Complain about this comment
Can't it be a pro-Scottish week that isn't Anglophobic? Much more harmonious that would be.

Did you hear the prog? Did you hear the "funny clips"?

I thought there was a Scottish Week last week. Missed it - Real Life has been madly busy.
Must stay in more.

Further point is that modern Scots seem to define themselves as anti-English. My father was an economic migrant from the celtic fringe and he had no problems supporting England against foreign teams. Now all we hear is how non-English Scotland is. As I have previously said my mum and dad had no cultural divide or clash of cultures. They lived happily until my dad died, another generation, another time. We now have nationalism that seeks to cause division. Our family is an example that we are in fact one people, divided by petty politicians focussing on minor difference.

Brilliant programme, Eddie! Looking forward to tomorrow's ...... What's that? It's only just begun? Must be slipping, or slurping.

The word. -.-. ..- - "gasps"
The U-turn. ..- etc
Everybody saw it - the U-turn and its reason. Cartoonists, newspapers etc
TUC
UTC
CUT
Yup - that is a sort of U-Turn if you want to.
One of Martha Kearneys interviewees - a USA citizen I assume - on the 1.00pm News today.
Despite everything - a year ago today etc - he - interviewee - allegedly STILL didn't get it!
Now if American guy could only say the word "CUT"! and add it to the words "my earnings" - allegedly - I would be happier.
Cut!

Listened to the item on Keith Floyd, however it was spoilt by an irritating beep sound.

Big Sis, re. yours @2: isn't 12.15 a tad early to post the 'Glass Box' for the 5pm slot? Am I still in LA?

What a shame you didn't interview Clive the cameraman, Eddie. I think we've heard one giant ego talking about another giant ego, and a slightly different perspective might have revealed more about Keith Floyd the man.
I got the very strong impression that neither man liked the other. Though I could be wrong.

Lady Sue, I absolutely agree, hence my little joke. But, I guess, it's Eddie's blog so he can do whatever he wants.

Okay, let's remember Mr. Floyd in his heyday. It may remind those to whom he is less well known just why he was so popular and why the current celebrity chefs speak so highly of the godfather of them all.

Whats happened to David McNickle?

The weather forecast a-la-shipping forecast was brilliant. Clear, concise, memorable - loved it.

Should he have considered spending our Tax Money on any "Unnecessary Programs" in the first place?

I remember Floyd roasting an entire boar on a spit in a huge stone fireplace in an Italian castle while quietly getting well-bladdered on Chianti. He might've even had a fag on the go as well.
Our supermarket doesn't do entire animals but if it ever should, we have the appropriate recipe
somewhere.
He was that great British product: the British eccentric.

Sorry to hear about the death of Keith Floyd. Does anyone remember Graham Kerr - the "Galloping Gourmet"?

Got to admire his nerve though - after shying away from that four-letter word for so long, he stands in front of the Unions and says it five times!

Oh - it's a plug?? I thought it was some kind of old coin, perhaps dug up by DMcN. It looks to me as if it has a squashed fly in the centre? I really must do something about these varifocal contact lenses.
Looternite, I didn't hear the programme, perhaps just as well. I'm a guid Scot, married to a Lancashire Lad, and our kids are neither madly one thing nor t'other. Re your "Further point is that modern Scots seem to define themselves as anti-English.", hmmm, no, I think that's a fallacy put about by the meedja - I don't define myself as anti-English in the least and can't think of any of my friends and acquaintances who would agree with that statement.

Having heard what Kieth felt and said about all those TV cooks on his documentary, I think they would do well to shut up. I felt Worrall Thompson insulted Mr Floyd just now on the news by saying, "Keith made cooking entertainment". No Mr Thompson, its smug TV presenters like you that turn food into entertainment. It might well as be any other commodity from what I've seen of you. Your guts and heart were never in it like Kieth's.

My job meant that I had to work all over the British Isles, for periods usually 5 to 10 days. What I noticed was that the east coast of Scotland is more friendly. I am talking about Aberdeen, Dundee, St Andrews and Edinburgh. However Glasgow, where do you want me to begin. I have inherited from my dad a highland Scottish name not unknown in West Scotland. At one time I was installing equipment in Glasgow, I introduced myself and handed over my card. The guy in charge of external service contracts corrected my pronunciation of MY NAME. I of course smiled and said nothing. An engineer from another company arrived a few days later to install the data handling equipment. He also had an originally Scottish name and again his pronunciation was corrected. After the contract officer left, me and this other engineer expressed surprise that:
A) we were corrected.
b) does it matter.
Having a southern English accent seems to be irritating to Glaswegians.
In Scotland, as you know, people ask what team do you support so that they can find out your religion.
My dad had no time for sectarianism and would not discuss Scottish football with anyone from Scotland or Ireland (north or south).
I have family in Scotland and they tend to keep their support for England at world cups etc. within the family. Which is a shame, surely.

Hello everybody,
Thanks for your thoughts. Nothing requiring serious editorial exegesis, thank heavens, so I will confine myself to the following observations.
(6) et al- shome mistake- Eddie isn't Scottish you know- he puts that accent on
(20) I think Nils was referring to city types carting their belongings around in those quite expensive cardboard boxes, but again, who can really know the mind of Nils?
And one more thing- ROGUE weatherman! We were fully intending to try the shipping forecast idea so many of you mentioned and the blooming weather professional did it himself. The temperature's rising...
A bientot,
Jo

Of course he would never have got the chance to work for BBC news if he had a southern English accent.

The first one/ones that I remember were the Craddocks, not that I recall Johnny doing all that much cookery!
As for the "best", a case of to each his/her own, I think - Gary, Rick and AWT are contenders for me.

Looternite - 38 - sorry that you've had unpleasant experiences, although perhaps, it sounds to me, this contracts officer was particularly pedantic! I can't imagine why anyone would be rude enough to correct someone else on how they should pronounce their own name.
Unless it was something like in the irritating toothpaste ad, where they insist on calling it MaCLEANS ;-)
Not sure why I'm apologising on behalf of a fellow pedant though, especially since I hail from the east coast.....

My name is not MaCleans. However I'm not sure now, how MaCleans is prononouced. The name correcting experiance wasn't unpleasant and has happened a few times, each time someone from Glasgow, or west Scotland. My son had his pronunciation corrected at university in the North of England and a Scottish member of staff corrected him. If my son and me were sensitive we would have been deeply insulted but as we are English these things don't really matter and so we shrug them off. A person I know named Doherty gets the same thing happening to him when he goes to Ireland.

McLean, MacLean and variations thereof are pronounced Mah-Clain (or even Mah-Clayn if that's clearer) in Scotland, as you probably well know Mr L. Not sure why I'm letting myself be drawn into this one but I certainly didn't mean to hazard a guess at your name, perish the thought, I meant merely that it irritates the hell out of me when the TV advert pronounces it as Mah-CLEAN.
I also don't really see what this has to do with your original assertion that "Now all we hear is how non-English Scotland is". Not all Scots are Nationalists, and that's what I intended to flag up. What we all tend hear sadly is what those who shout the loudest and the longest are saying - that doesn't mean to say that they are speaking on behalf of the majority.
Complain about this comment

I thought it was, but the advert certainly brings to mind the other pronunciation at first thought. I agree with you that the Nationalists have taken over the adgenda and that is the only voice we hear. It's a bit like Islam and complaints from peaceful muslims that their voice is not reported.
Pronunciation of MacLean or other Scottish names only seems to irritate Scottish people. I personally am relaxed about such variation.
