Thanks for the great interview throwing light on the personal experience of someone with Schizophrenia - it was refreshing to hear about it in the context of someone who like most is dealing with the illness and not the subject of some terrible sensational headline. I was fascinated to hear Stuart talking about how he experienced some beautiful things and was able to channel some of his state into creative avenues. Very nice approach all round and very sensitively handled :-)

Ahhhh - I didn't realise how much I've missed David Mellor's unique brand of drivel until his interview on Chelsea's ban on new signings.
As impartial as a club manager and as insightful as an ex-professional turned commentator, he has just reminded me what a brilliant mind British politics has been missing for the last decade.
(At least we've got Boris as a consolation prize, I guess)

I agree entirely with Dr-Bee about the piece today on schizophrenia. This was positive and sensitive reporting at its best. Working in the mental health services too I am all to aware of the stigma attaching to this illness and welcome such accounts to counter it. Never been moved to use blogs before but this has really motivated me!

Thank you Stuart/Stewart. And the interview on schizophrenia.
Great radio, Eddie and you know how difficult I find praising you.
A convincing and fascinating insight into your own feelings, Mr Baker-Brown.
Oh and David Mellor? My goodness - he did NOT surprise me I am afraid.
I would like just ONE time to be surprised by actual agreement for the "punishment" handed down to a football player for boorish behaviour or a football club breaking the rules. Everyone is now allegedly looking forward to a possible appeal by Chelsea and then it is "business as usual" - in effect - ill effects to transfers avoided perhaps!
Allegedly - Man Utd in bovver? - ask Sir Alex - Arsenal? - ask Mr Wenger - and Chelsea - I sigh!

Lovely reading by Michael Rosen - thank you.

Dr Bee, (3)
Heres the the thing. On another day, the reporting will revert back to the negative sensationalism where one word negative descriptors are aloud to speak the whole story. Usually this is allowed to cover up the failing mental health and support services.
Schizophrenia is one of those conditions that they are desperate to find a genetic cause for, (no 100% conclusive evidence as yet). It is one of the things they would like to terminally eradicate before birth along with all the other conditions like autism, and downs syndrome that geneticists, scientists, doctors, and governments would like to put an end too.

David Mellor;
Thats right ignore the rules and regulations...what did you expect from a disgraced politition.

I also listened to Michael Rosen and his piece on Narcissist.
Just looked up the word. Narcissist! Self centred and conceited, eh Edward?
Oddly I thought Mr Rosen's piece was about........ right.
And no Carly Simon. Not at all about me! Book at Teatime though.
The word "verbose" comes to mind. A horse called "Hotham" won today - and that is a double edged joke to those who know.
And guess who wasn't on it? lol

Regarding the plea bargain in the Doncaster assaults, am I missing something?
The maximum sentence for GBH with intent and attempted murder may well be the same, but there is a difference in the sentence available to a judge when the accused has pleaded guilty. A guilty plea to GBH will automatically command a far lighter sentence than a guilty verdict after a not guilty plea to attempted murder.
My sympathy to the victims, and I hope the lazy and complacent police who apparently did not even bother to apply for custody after the earlier assault receive the same public rebuke that social workers would in similar circumstances.

I don't think that David Mellor can actually be a fan of the game of football. A real fan would not want to see cheats prosper, nor a few wealthy clubs buy up all the talent.
Of course, he is well known as a club supporter, but that is a totally different thing entirely...

If national policy is such a constraint on schools, could Michael Rosen explain why seven out of eight schools seem to be unaffected when it comes to teachers reading books to children? Perhaps it's just an example of the media's interest in the negative aspects of life that he should be allowed to generalise without being challenged. It's certainly sloppy journalism.

I'd like to add my thanks to those above for the insightful interview with Stuart regarding his Schizophrenia. We hear the word bandied around, but most of us probably wouldn't know what it meant to the sufferer. Well done.
Also, I found the interview with the elderly German man regarding his experience inside the Berlin bunker during Hitlers last days interesting. This is the sort of theing that PM does well, taking something we know, and looking at it from a different angle.
All that said, you really should've picked someone other than David Mellor to comment on the Chelsea situation. His statement that "rules are flexible, and don't always apply, but anyway it's all a plot because someone doesn't like us" beggars belief. The rugby club I support has just gone through the wringer for breaking rules, and whilst I wish it hadn't happened, a true fan of any sport has to understand that the rules are the rules, and if you break them, you pay the penalty.
so, +2 for the schizophrenia and German was survivor stories, -1 for David Mellor.

#14 Fearless Fred
Surely every one knows that international sports bodies are biased against every thing English. Don't get me on the cheating refs etc.

Fearless: Your comment on the rules was a bit heartfelt, wasn't it? I'm thinking about another sport ;o)

Wonderful interview with Stuart on Schizophrenia and one that has made me reflect on people I thought I knew but probably did not - articulate, informative and heart warming. It touched me and I truly hope Stuart et al continue to conquer their daemons and channel their energies into something that rewards firstly themselves and hopefully others close to them. First class radio and please enhance the interview by show casing some of Stuart "brilliant" photographs

There is something about the Greek myths thst appeals to adults and children alike. Michael Rosen's beautiful version of Narcissus would, I'm sure, encourage anyone to 'Read on'. Now, where's my 'Big book of Myths and legends'?
could he read us a story again, please?

Why isn't Michael presenting 'Word of Mouth'?
It's so boring now it has the same effect as the weather forecast.

Well, where do we begin?
The theory of moral panics has a casual metaphysics.
Apparently any event which causes institutions to disagree about it has caused a moral panic.
Perhaps because almost every moral disagreement seems to cause some panic and perhaps because of sheer bad grammar. After all the panic is not moral and disagreeing with what is right cannot be moral either.
So we must look elsewhere. These kids are killing each other. Do you know why?
I think it's because of the GSCE results for 2009 and 2016.
These are kids who are told they are valueless every day of their lives.
It's their own fault they aren't getting on.
Or it's the fault of those owed even more by the economic system.
So they get violent towards their own kind or those who are owed more.
It's very rare indeed that the victims of oppression act violently towards those better off
So many possibilities.
But all of them will result in the people whose fault it truly is, tut-tutting.
They will not say
'Perhaps because we have crowded these children out of educational success by ensuring our own children 'succeed' we may have damaged these children irretrievably. At the most vulnerable of ages - when they first go to school to discover we have already put our own children first'
They will just say
'Why can't these children read and write in 2009? Why will they be part of the 55 per cent who don't go to university? Why are they so violent? A child psychologist should tell us'
Because they are not honest enough to tell themselves the reason.
Philosphers call their ethic 'moral relativism'.
Bernard (Shirley's (Vera's daughter) husband) was very hot on it****.
I call it downright immorality.
**** Williams, Williams and Brittain, of course. PM.

Goodness Sid - that's a bit of a damning critique of PM isn't it? I mean, Eddie does his best, though he obviously has the occasional off-day. Is there something the BBC could do to help you understand the programme better? ;-)
