The Beach.

Welcome to The Beach, a very special place on the PM Blog. The sun shines, the drinks are free, there are more than enough sun loungers and hammocks to go round, and the camels are friendly. So, take a break from your day to day stresses and strains and relax. There are only two rules; 1) be nice to everyone, and 2) don't eat the petunias."

Anyway, here's the scrambled eggs and bacon for DIY. There are also sausages and more bacon and bread and a variety of sauces for making geralds.
And I've put a fresh pot of coffee and another of tea on.

In the interests of research, and since I haven't subscribed to the Met Office site (I only wanted to see what they did with Welsh place names, honest) I typed 'western isles' into the BBC Weather search and was informed 'There are no forecasts in the UK matching [box]western isles'. Ditto for 'highlands'. Now either they are case-over-sensitive, or this is odd.
Glad to see this, though:
There are 3 forecasts in the UK matching 'wales':
Liverpool, Merseyside (near Wallasey)
London City, Greater London (near Woolwich)
Wells, Somerset

On the Lido (as posh Beaches are called) on the Serpentine yesterday, I am reliably informed, a snack for two cost 27 quid.
Still, the starlings eat out of your hand, on the mob handed wing, the swimming is excellent, the social mix is convincingly multicultural and the atmosphere is like a return to the pleasingly naive 1950s.

I am finding this moderation nonsense very upsetting now. The BBC benefits from this blog by gathering together a core of its PM listeners who can, when asked, give specialist advice or comment on subjects the programme is covering.

Toilet paper is like IT. Everyone goes on about how nice the modernisations are to use, allowing deft finger work, that they're so unlike the eye watering buttock clenching old stuff, and how it puts them on a pedastal, whilst the Stephan Frys of this world expound on how clever they are to be 'no flies on us' up to date.
But isn't it the inventors behind Mozilla and elephant roll rather than the users who should be being congratulated. Praising oneself for using an invention as it should be used is surely what Sean Connery says when he says 'Eyesight'.

Hi All
I haven't been able to get hold of anyone at PM to tell you this, so I hope you don't mind me interrupting to explain the removal of some recent posts and action taken against accounts.
Some users have been posting up the details of the moderation company, and even the home addresses of staff who work there. While of course this information is freely available to licence fee payers, we have regular instances of threats being made against the moderators and so we remove references to the company as a matter of course to prevent this kind of intimidation - anyone working for the BBC or their suppliers deserves the same protection from harassment as any of you would have on BBC services.
There's some more discussion about this here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mb6music/F1950413?thread=5745228&skip=180&show=20#p67255570
If you wish to make a complaint or FOI request you can visit http://www.bbc.co.uk/complaints and http://www.bbc.co.uk/foi respectively.
I hope this explains the removal of posts and that it will bring an end to this - and that it will be understood that users who continue to do this may have action taken against their accounts.

I was active on this blog yesterday, and indeed had a few of my own posts removed. Nobody posted home addresses of moderators (!) and certainly no threats were made, nor any remarks which could in any way be mistaken for a threat. I'm quite certain that nobody who was posting here yesterday would ever dream of behaving in such a way.
The moderators removed posts which mentioned their company name, or anything which sounded vaguley like it.
The company concerned is a supplier to the BBC, you are its client and we are the license payers. Moderation should be conducted in the interests of the BBC and its users, not the commercial entity providing the service.

David (243) : It is now clear that frogging peeps weren't 'making a nuisance of themselves' they were falling foul of a brand new rule (Thou shalt not mention the mods company) which hadn't actually been made known to us.
All this could have been prevented if someone had just flagged up the new rule when it was brought in. Then, anyone who deliberately tried to circumvent it would indeed have been 'making a nuisance of themselves' and deserved the consequences.
As things stand, it's rather like someone being arrested for shouting: 'Down with Eastasia!' at a public gathering, not having been told that they were suddenly now at war with Eurasia again. That man Orwell was a genius.

I have done no such thing (or, if I have, I am unaware of

All those who wish to join me to celebrate the Beach are cordially (that would be elderflower cordial, plus a large vat of sprout cordial which, inexplicably, is still full despite being nicely matured) invited to join me.
I took the liberty of filling a lined sandpit with ice, in which nestle champagne, gin, tonic, several tasty fruit juices and smoothies and some other bottles with their labels turned away - perhaps you'd like to decide what they are?

There's anough here to last till well after midnight, so I've arranged for coffees at Nick's to be available at any time -

Robocof is only activated when humans are in no mood / fit state to make coffee, and will in no way be any substitute for real Beachfroggers. Hi All
I've been in touch with the PM team who will post later today about the problems we have on here in the last few days.
In the meantime I'll answer a couple of your queries from above:
The moderators don't have access to your full name or date of birth - this is only available to a select few within the BBC. There might be times when we do need to share this information with suppliers or other third parties which is why it's covered in the terms. In fact the normal mods don't even see which account is making a post, it's only if escalated to a supervisor or host will the username be made available.
You should know that if you reply to the email sent by the moderators it goes to the divisional team within the BBC and it is their responsibility to reply or raise with our team as necessary. This, like the posts that sit referred for long periods is an issue we hope will be resolved soon.
Regardless of any complaints you might have about the service, harassing BBC staff or the staff of BBC suppliers is completely unacceptable. They deserve exactly the same protection from intimidation, harassment or invasion of privacy as you receive here. We are sorry that some of you have been caught up as we dealt with more serious behaviour, but continuing to repost removed material, even in ever more 'creative' ways, will result in action being taken against accounts.
Paul - CCT

Paul: Thank you for your further comments. I entirely agree with your point about harassment - it applies to us all, whichever side of the Blog we sit. I also appreciate your comment about people who have been 'caught up' in what, from what you've said, seems to be a wider issue, and since I assume you mean 'innocently' - as it certainly is in my case, and I think in the case of some others hereabouts - your comment is welcomed by me.

Paul (335) I do hope that some calm and sanity can be brought to the whole situation. In your post, you say You should know that if you reply to the email sent by the moderators it goes to the divisional team within the BBC and it is their responsibility to reply or raise with our team as necessary. This, like the posts that sit referred for long periods is an issue we hope will be resolved soon.. That's good news. The few times I've been modded, I tried to reply via this route, but there was absolutely no response, not even an automated "thanks for your email, we will get back to you shortly". Can I suggest that you at least put something in place that can reassure those wishing to contact someone that their email has actually reached someone?
Anyway, enough of that. Happy 3 Years and 1 Day, Blog!

Can you explain why Jacksforge was hounded off the site.
or why saying a basic fact in a non racially bias way is a banning offence.
Just that some never tried to out any BBC contracted staff.
but they were harassed within the medium here by staff.
There has never been a satisfactory explanation of why jacksforge/happylaze was banned.
There is more to the bbc blog world than the beach.
and some of us want to know why these issues are banned from discussions even on boards that were about "improving the balance"
still not worth answering to those that wonder why some are banned and others stay to spout hate another day.
so don't talk of threats to the staff because I doubt there have been any that can beat the comments allowed by the staff for nasty hate filled threatening posts.
If it is not mods writing them why do they allow them so consistantly?

I am sorry to say this but I have been watching recent developments on the Blog with increasing disquiet: I used to enjoy many of the contributions, now I mostly scroll. I feel that the Blog about the stories in the news has become the story about the Blog. Saturn devouring its own children, you may say.
I am departing from the desolation of the interminable squabbles and bickering, the self-appointed Big Brother monitors daily patrolling every thread like a classroom, ticking off naughty little bloggers, and some sad spelling.
For a while coming to the Blog felt like rejoining friends. Now so many valuable contributors seem to have stopped.
Perhaps one day the Blog will regain its true purpose and form. I'd love to come back then; for now, farewell. I miss the camels already...

Here on the Beach posts are like Love Letters in the Sand.
We stand below the high tide line, where seaweeds of every kind, some the long hair of mermaids, another the sort like purple lace that old ladies use to make blancmange, another yet, popped between thumb and forefinger by fathers trying to amuse their young sons as well as the broad thin bands used for larva bread, together with the broken wicker lobster pots, the debris of broken shell fish from off shore colonies, the yellow plastic of broken buoys, the timber from broken crates, all swept up as by giant brooms into a thick straight line parallel to the sea's edge.
Here, where all are like Ozimandes and Canute, every joke good or bad every profound observation, every facile comment every invention, every hackneyed repetiton, every originbality, every word is vanity, mere vanity. But the sea its loud stage whisper filling our ears will wave every letter goodbye into freshly furrowed sand.
The 12 hour coming and going of the sea will cleanse every thought and we will know our past of yesterday, an hour ago, a few minutes ago has surrendered to our unendingly renewed present.
We start afresh, afreshed by the mesmerising tide of the endless sea.

Now if only the BBC could understand their underlings actions better and truly accept criticism instead of just banning criticism people would not have felt like they had to interrupt your beach. they were busy fighting in the bars on the sea front, but then some local bullyboys who run the resort started kicking them out.(to be honest they kicked out those that were not starting fights because it is easier to kick the peaceful out and let the ruffies have their way than jump in and get involved.

Charitable concert tonight at RAF Unmentionable. In aid of an injured serviceman aiming to compete at the 2012 Olympics. 'Fete Accompli', a bunch of performers who have various folk clubs in common, agreed to turn up and share the programme between them, free of charge.
Plan A: Lying Scotsman to play one slot, Fifi also to play a solo slot.
Lying Scotsman bass player falls ill. Guitar player and Fifi have one rehearsal left, to decide whether a bass-less duo is feasible. It is.
Plan B: Lying Scotsman (duo) to play one revised slot, followed by Fifi playing solo slot. Fifi's Other 'Arf will also come along, to take photos and footage and provide some (largely unrehearsed) backing vocals.
During said rehearsal, guitar player gets an urgent phone call. Family member dangerously ill, he has to miss the gig too.
Plan C: Fifi revises the playlist again, relying heavily on Lying Scotsman songs she can play adequately as well as sing, and on OA's support with the vocals.
On the afternoon before the gig, OA announces that he doesn't know when his car will be back from MoT, and that he doesn't have contact details for the guy who's driven it away for said test. (He was recommended by our usual guy, so it's not 'quite' as dodgy as it looks!) It is, as I type this, an hour and a half before I have to leave for the gig - because I am providing most of the PA kit.
Plan ... where are we? ... D: RAF Unmentionable's going to be pretty darn sick of Fifi's voice by midnight!
