The Beach.

Welcome to The Beach, a very special place on the PM Blog. The sun shines, the drinks are free, there are more than enough sun loungers and hammocks to go round, and the camels are friendly. So, take a break from your day to day stresses and strains and relax. There are only two rules; 1) be nice to everyone, and 2) don't eat the petunias."

    Hi All

I haven't been able to get hold of anyone at PM to tell you this, so I hope you don't mind me interrupting to explain the removal of some recent posts and action taken against accounts.

Some users have been posting up the details of the moderation company, and even the home addresses of staff who work there. While of course this information is freely available to licence fee payers, we have regular instances of threats being made against the moderators and so we remove references to the company as a matter of course to prevent this kind of intimidation - anyone working for the BBC or their suppliers deserves the same protection from harassment as any of you would have on BBC services.

There's some more discussion about this here:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mb6music/F1950413?thread=5745228&skip=180&show=20#p67255570

If you wish to make a complaint or FOI request you can visit http://www.bbc.co.uk/complaints and http://www.bbc.co.uk/foi respectively.

I hope this explains the removal of posts and that it will bring an end to this - and that it will be understood that users who continue to do this may have action taken against their accounts.

Nobody posted home addresses of moderators (!) and certainly no threats were made, nor any remarks which could in any way be mistaken for a threat. I'm quite certain that nobody who was posting here yesterday would ever dream of behaving in such a way.

The moderators removed posts which mentioned their company name, or anything which sounded vaguley like it.

The company concerned is a supplier to the BBC, you are its client and we are the license payers. Moderation should be conducted in the interests of the BBC and its users, not the commercial entity providing the service.

I took the liberty of filling a lined sandpit with ice, in which nestle champagne, gin, tonic, several tasty fruit juices and smoothies and some other bottles with their labels turned away - perhaps you'd like to decide what they are?

There's a barrel of cider and a bottle of Macallan, which a handsome young man who claims to be a relative is eyeing.

Cap'n Jack is bringing some rum.

All we need now is nibbles and peeps.

There's anough here to last till well after midnight, so I've arranged for coffees at Nick's to be available at any time -

Ah! Here's Robocof, the humanoid robot whose sole purpose in virtual life is to make perfect coffee for anyone on the Beach. Robocof is only activated when humans are in no mood / fit state to make coffee, and will in no way be any substitute for real Beachfroggers. If there's a coffee-making Frogger around, he won't be back. At least until he's wanted.

    Hi All

I've been in touch with the PM team who will post later today about the problems we have on here in the last few days.

In the meantime I'll answer a couple of your queries from above:

The moderators don't have access to your full name or date of birth - this is only available to a select few within the BBC. There might be times when we do need to share this information with suppliers or other third parties which is why it's covered in the terms. In fact the normal mods don't even see which account is making a post, it's only if escalated to a supervisor or host will the username be made available.

You should know that if you reply to the email sent by the moderators it goes to the divisional team within the BBC and it is their responsibility to reply or raise with our team as necessary. This, like the posts that sit referred for long periods is an issue we hope will be resolved soon.

Regardless of any complaints you might have about the service, harassing BBC staff or the staff of BBC suppliers is completely unacceptable. They deserve exactly the same protection from intimidation, harassment or invasion of privacy as you receive here. We are sorry that some of you have been caught up as we dealt with more serious behaviour, but continuing to repost removed material, even in ever more 'creative' ways, will result in action being taken against accounts.

Just that some never tried to out any BBC contracted staff.

There has never been a satisfactory explanation of why jacksforge/happylaze was banned.
There is more to the bbc blog world than the beach.
and some of us want to know why these issues are banned from discussions even on boards that were about "improving the balance"

still not worth answering to those that wonder why some are banned and others stay to spout hate another day.

so don't talk of threats to the staff because I doubt there have been any that can beat the comments allowed by the staff for nasty hate filled threatening posts.

I am sorry to say this but I have been watching recent developments on the Blog with increasing disquiet: I used to enjoy many of the contributions, now I mostly scroll. I feel that the Blog about the stories in the news has become the story about the Blog. Saturn devouring its own children, you may say.
I am departing from the desolation of the interminable squabbles and bickering, the self-appointed Big Brother monitors daily patrolling every thread like a classroom, ticking off naughty little bloggers, and some sad spelling.
For a while coming to the Blog felt like rejoining friends. Now so many valuable contributors seem to have stopped.
Perhaps one day the Blog will regain its true purpose and form. I'd love to come back then; for now, farewell. I miss the camels already...

Here, where all are like Ozimandes and Canute, every joke good or bad every profound observation, every facile comment every invention, every hackneyed repetiton, every originbality, every word is vanity, mere vanity. But the sea its loud stage whisper filling our ears will wave every letter goodbye into freshly furrowed sand.

Now today, in Mother's town, there's a shop with an aisle full of Christmas cards!!!!!

I'd better start looking for the Christmas Tree

Right, I've warmed the mince pies and there is custard, cream (pouring and whipped) and brandy butter for everyone to pour/dollop/spread on them as they prefer. And not to be missed out, I have copied the invention of a certain comedy programme the name of which is another name for a certain part of the lower person starring one Ade Edmundson and Rik Mayall. So help yourself to vodka margerine too!

I'll get the fairy lights on the tree, can someone get the crackers?

Oh yes, time to get the sprouts on...

It's great to walk along the Promenade if you were expecting sunshine and get caught in a downpour a mile from shelter. Then you drench to the skin in warm exhilarating rain.

Plan A: Lying Scotsman to play one slot, Fifi also to play a solo slot.

Lying Scotsman bass player falls ill. Guitar player and Fifi have one rehearsal left, to decide whether a bass-less duo is feasible. It is.

Plan B: Lying Scotsman (duo) to play one revised slot, followed by Fifi playing solo slot. Fifi's Other 'Arf will also come along, to take photos and footage and provide some (largely unrehearsed) backing vocals.

During said rehearsal, guitar player gets an urgent phone call. Family member dangerously ill, he has to miss the gig too.

Plan C: Fifi revises the playlist again, relying heavily on Lying Scotsman songs she can play adequately as well as sing, and on OA's support with the vocals.

On the afternoon before the gig, OA announces that he doesn't know when his car will be back from MoT, and that he doesn't have contact details for the guy who's driven it away for said test. (He was recommended by our usual guy, so it's not 'quite' as dodgy as it looks!) It is, as I type this, an hour and a half before I have to leave for the gig - because I am providing most of the PA kit.

Plan ... where are we? ... D: RAF Unmentionable's going to be pretty darn sick of Fifi's voice by midnight!
