The PM Glass Box.

Post categories:

glassflu.JPG

The Glass Box is where the PM team meets in at 18.00 every weeknight to discuss the content of the programme.

We try to be honest with each other, but not hurtful, as we talk about what worked and what didn't...what met our expectations and what fell short.

This virtual glass box is where you're encouraged to take part in the same spirit. Tonight's editor Roger Sawyer will read your comments and may well add his own.

    Roger,

As an editor, could you comment on the editorial point I raised in post #14 on the AM Glass Box this morning.

After our recent Parliamentary scandals, many people are looking outside the traditional party candidates, but there's evidence to suggest Regional BBC editors are 'short listing' candidates for BBC coverage. It could be argued independent candidates should have more coverage, given party candidates benefit from the allocation of five minute slots across terrestrial channels, for party election broadcasts. A better solution would be to give all candidates a five minute slot each, irrespective of party affiliation. Prospective independent MPs appear to be at a distinct disadvantage; Martin Bell was the exception to the rule. What needs to change before the next general election in order that all parliamentary candidates are treated equally? BBC editorial policy? The law? Ministerial guidelines?

What's all this about franchises? The Bond franchise, the Potter franchise?

Franchise: 1) An authorization to sell a company's goods or services in a particular place. 2) A business established or operated under an authorization to sell or distribute a company's goods or services in a particular area

Are there Bond franchises all over the country like Starbucks?

It feels just fine. Which prophet are you talking about? I don't know any sceptical prophets.

And is that your best argument? That 99% of the world agrees with you? You must know that most people simply don't care about AGW. Except they will start to get very angry when they're made to pay to prevent something that isn't happening.

Don't believe me? Go read RealClimate, who are trying to explain why there hasn't been any warming since 1998. "We are not talking about global cooling, just a pause in warming."

Sid, don't encourage him, of course he hasn't grasped it, or anything else. Think of it as a cult, closest thing is the Moonies. There's a small [diminishing] band of denial merchants on the net; those with average intelligence write books, the others buy them. They bring to mind a Groucho Marx quote: 'Who you gonna believe, me or your own eyes?' Nothing that happens in the world shakes this cult's belief that we are all duped by demonic forces of Illuminati world government, and it just isn't happening. They will be saying this as the water reaches their necks.

But you hit the nail on the head, they are on another time scale, if not another planet. The conflate weather with climate and can't seem to get the difference, and a cool year is enough to get them excited as hell, and they go round saying 'you see!'.

    Enough time wasted.

For example, Claude Allegre. 'His break with what he now sees as environmental cant on climate change came in September, in an article entitled "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" in l' Express, the French weekly. His article cited evidence that Antarctica is gaining ice and that Kilimanjaro's retreating snow caps, among other global-warming concerns, come from natural causes. "The cause of this climate change is unknown," he states matter of factly. There is no basis for saying, as most do, that the "science is settled." Dr. Allegre's skepticism is noteworthy in several respects. For one, he is an exalted member of France's political establishment, a friend of former Socialist president Lionel Jospin, and, from 1997 to 2000, his minister of education, research and technology, charged with improving the quality of government research through closer co-operation with France's educational institutions. For another, Dr. Allegre has the highest environmental credentials. The author of early environmental books, he fought successful battles to protect the ozone layer from CFCs and public health from lead pollution. His break with scientific dogma over global warming came at a personal cost.'

And he's just one of many who have been turning their backs on AGW claims.
