Glass Box for Thursday PM
Here is the place where you can comment on tonight's programme. We'll be gathering in our own glass box for a post-programme meeting. Here is your own virtual glass box. Tell us what you think, and Amanda Lewis who is editing this evening will read your comments and respond.

Just to fix it so it doesn't fade away today...
My post on the AM glassbox about the teacher was modded, presumably as it's all alleged and I didn't use the word. I do think this alleged event, if it is indeed true as the news reported, has been a long time coming. Discipline when I were a lad [teenage] consisted in the cane. It hurt, perhaps for half an hour. It made us pretty circumspect about our behaviour as it was only used for really serious 'crimes'. But there was no tolerance of lack of respect for teachers, as appears to be rife, allegedly, today. And with no girls to give macho displays to, we were free to study and learn... allegedly.

Just a thought, this puts a different slant on the coloquial term for journalists - hacks.

Has the link to this page failed to materialise again? Usually more posts by this time, or perhaps no one is listening?
An idea: Since people commenting and responding on the AM glassbox sometimes stray over into PM, and as the original aim of getting suggestions for the programme [by 10am] seems largely to be ignored, why not combine the two into Glassbox, and when AM turns into PM, place a marker line, so conversations can be continued, previous, morning, posts can be read, and no one has to go off searching for th PM glassbox late in the afternoon... just a thought.

When you discuss swine flu in future, can you update us on vacines, how they are coming on and the various types. The H and N numbers relate to markers on the top of each virus which the immune system can latch onto, but New Scientist recently reported a new type of vaccine that targets proteins common to all flu viruses, at least all the H and N type, that would protect us from any flu and would not need changing each year for the seasonal flu nor would require one vacine for the seasonal flu and more for new flues like swine flu and bird flu if it ever strikes. I had the impression that this new vacine was months away but no one knows what happens if this novel vacine arrives in the body, whether it just innoculates the body or whether it might trigger sometning else, maybe the immune system panicking or running amock. When a test on new pharmaceuticals went wrong and lead to the name 'elephant man' that had something to do with how the body reacts to new treatments to the imune system.

Let it be known that until the Silly Season ends in Septober, I am on automatic pirate.
Multi-storey farming. Imagine, some four ton bull takes a fancy to a cute cow and charges (they don't do "the chat up"), and the pair of them emerge at thirty mph from the 37th floor. And land right in the middle of your barby.
Give mois strength.

Did you answer my question there then?

I just realise what that Guardian journalist was asking our poor hard pressed (would used deliberately) police to do. In John Thaws' Morse voice "By the way, Lewis (Amanda) - is that a policewomans tie up above?"
A policewomans cricket team? Sorry about the box joke. Poor taste.
Oh yes - how many names was that they have suddenly stumbled on? The Guardian? Thousands?
How many newspaper reporters with allegedly questionable tactics? 27?
How much transfer is there between the newspapers as to staffing? A lot if my newspaper is anything to go by - so information is taken in and out of newspaper offices.
So someone - a police representative should have traipsed around that list of well known names asking what they - the alleged bad newspaper dudes and dames might be after? Without cautioning well known person first? lol
Starting from 2 years ago they may have been a quarter through that list by now.
Come on The Guardian. Tell us what you know and save us a heck of a lot of money.

From what I've heard, including Newsnight last night, it's 3,000 approx., and not just the Newsoftheworld involved, but other newspapers where it's a pretty regular occurance and part of the culture [allegedly]. Actually the man saying that didn't use the word allegedly, so must be pretty sure of his facts.

Agreed... and the whistle must have been blown by Blears since the email was sent to her. Vindictive? Hazel? She of the fixed smile?
It was our country, but appears to have been hijacked, allegedly.

Nobody mentioned to the policeman that the news organisation in question has gone on record as habitually paying off the police. Legally, of course. Allegedly.
IA (1) I agree - in the good old days we were brought up to have proper respect, which is why we grew up into decent folks who think nothing of braining a kid with a flask-stand. Allegedly.

A lot of the cellphone hacking was actually voice-mail hacking - and it was easy and opportunistic. All you had to do was call the mobile and if you got through to the voice-mail, hit the * button and then input the network's default PIN - many people never bothered changing this. You could then listen to any messages. Security is nowadays a lot better - however if you use voice-mail, especially if you have an answerphone at home, have you changed the remote access code away from the manufacturers default? Probably not!

You overlooked Boris Johnson's demand that the EU tones down it's hedge fund regulations. London would suffer since it has so many hedge fund managers. (The funds themselves are off shore)
Watch my lips: We don't want the managers, we don't want the mangers performance money, we don't want the managers' fees.
The money is ill gotten and ill spent.
Let government CREATE spending power to the value that value was 'LOST' by driving these gamblers. money changers and speculators out of the City, and SPEND it on London schools, hospitals and housing, Boris.

17 IA - well - nothing breeds violence like fear so you might be right. What we have is an allegation of attempted murder. It's a bit OTT to start off by accusing the victim. If you heard that a kid had hit a teacher, would you accuse the teacher?
If you were to say that the masses seem always to run from one extreme to another and can never find the middle ground, well, I'd have to agree. I cannot agree with an instant character-assassination of an unknown youngster in intensive care though. Keep thinking that way and you may end up in the same trouble.

ia (1, 17)I've got to say that I think you're way off base there. To compare corporal punishment from the past with an alleged attack that left a 14 year old so severely injured that they are being held in hospital and his condition is still described as very serious is just wrong. If the man is charged and convicted, then he will have been guilty of an outrageous attack on a child in his care as a teacher. Obviously, we must wait to see if he is charged and if so, whether he is convicted before we can say this for certain, but to make light of the allegation as you have is, I would suggest, crass.

I wasn't making light of it at all. Teachers don't normally assault pupils, they are teachers because they like to teach young people. This one looks pretty average, pleasant etc. and one must look beyond the ludicrous police 'investigated for attempted murder' since murder mean premeditated. My take on it is the effort to wind teacher up, and if you know anything whatsoever about what goes on in classrooms you'll know what I mean, went horribly wrong. Maybe he's had a breakdown, it will doubtless be from the constant daily grind of kids behaving badly. And th4e reason for that is there is no discipline because eachers are not allowed to touch a child and can't even send them for punishment to the head teacher. Usually assaults are by pupils on teachers. Notice anything different here?

re the phone hacking --you do realise that ALL OUR phone calls ,emails and internet usage is being monitored by THEM!!! what is so different that some newspapers are doing the same to find a juicy few pages. THEY are watching / listening to us under the guise of anti terror so do not mention terrorist, bin laden, fertiliser or bomb--oooops they will be knocking my door down any moment

Seems my take on the teacher was spot on, pupils and ex pupils have created a support group with a Facebook page here http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=100026527879
And all who know him are saying the same thing; kind man, excellent teacher, only recently returned to school after a breakdown which even included a stroke, stress from unruly, disobedient pupils...
I rest my case. Perhaps a representative from the children's rights lobby would like to comment. Or perhaps they should all read Lord of the Flies.
