Thursday's Glass Box.
The Glass Box is where the PM team meets in at 18.00 every weeknight to discuss the content of the programme.
We try to be honest with each other, but not hurtful, as we talk about what worked and what didn't...what met our expectations and what fell short.
This virtual glass box is where you're encouraged to take part in the same spirit. PM's editor Eloise Twisk will read your comments and may well add her own.

Very concerned about Margaret Haywood, the nurse who has been struck off for acting in the wider public interest. She got a lower 'sentence' than Jonathon Ross and should be given a payrise rather than having her liklihood taken away.
The word 'appalling' is much overused these days, but this is one example where where it most certainly applies.

Well done Eddie!
Thought you could have pushed the nurses union rep a bit harder. Same for the government minister. Thought you might have asked if she would look into this individual case with the view to overturning this injustice!

This programme will not figure favourably in my memory, Eddie.
A nurse is struck off full stop, Eddie Mair? The thread above this.
Thanks and I am sorry for the woman. Exposing the shameful treatment of fairly helpless people. Some thanks.
But it is typical of this hypocritical country.
And yes - I am furious. Listening to the mealey mouthed utterings of MoPs with their inability to show any shame for their selfish doings. And that Keir Starmer QC from the CPS. What a wonderful set of words which actually meant nothing at all.
"Not enough evidence"?
But the other posters on PM are right, Eddie. As are those on YouTube. Cryptic. My posts.
To save someone elses face or several faces?
For a few weeks - fine - but how unfair is it that one cannot have free speech in Great Britain. I sound like an idiot. And that is because I write like an idiot.
I am done on the BBC. Great Britain can now wonder what I will do next.
I am striking myself of the register.

Concerning the Nurse. What really turns me off are all those idiot interviewees who make bland motherhood statements but "can't comment on this particular case because I'm not familiar with the details". Why do they think they are being interviewed? If they're not familiar with the particular case, they should be spending their time getting familiar, not blabbering on saying nothing of interest to anyone.

Well, I just wanted to say I enjoyed the tribute to Clement Freud. Clever, amusing and (in David Steel's case, anyway) touching.

So many people have blogged in support of Nurse Haywood. Please write to the Nursing and Midwifery Council. She was right to do what she did. Did she neglect and mistreat patients? NO. Her ward managers allowed that to happen and they should be disciplined. Will the Nursing & Midwifery Council take note? I emailed them to protest at their self serving decision. You can find out where to complain on their their website. They are a public body and should be accountable to the public and patients.
I was apalled at the RCN Spokesperson refusal to comment on the gross injustice meted out to Nurse Haywood for standing up against the abuse and neglect of elderly patients.case. He could'nt even have the decency to say that the RCN would at least consider the merits of her case, and whether she has grounds for appeal. Thats the very least I'd expect of a body that claims to be a Trade Union. Does the RCN accept every judgement of the Nursing & Midwifery Council? The RCN is more concerned with protecting the vested interests of staff and NHS management.

Nice to see Eddie Mair challenging someone who told the ever repeated lie that they could not comment on a specific case. If guests are not actually prepared to comment on the topic being discussed, why are they given any airtime?

Eddie,
I believe Panorama/the BBC now have a real practical/social/and moral duty of care toward Margaret Haywood as an individual.
The BBC undertook her services to produce a program with great public interest. Now due to her cooperation she faces the unknown and unexpected consequences.
The BBC need to take up the cause of Margaret Haywood. The BBC also have a duty to upholding public interest investigation.
others will be deterred from coming forward. But, more importantly, so that the BBC can't be accused of what the Midwifery and Nursing council have done to Mrs Haywood. Namely, abandoned her and took away her lively hood.
I remember when this was the kind of regime that we used to castigate in the old USSR where individuals were banned from gaining work in their chosen profession and other areas if they spoke out against the establishment.
Why is this case any different?

fjd (18) Absolutely!
Eddie, can you please find out if the Panorama team have issued any statement about the support they will give Margaret Heywood. Indeed can you find out what support she had in preparing her legal case as one individual against a large, bureaucratic and legally well supported body.

Much as i agree with most that has been said about nurse Heywood, could i please change the subject. This Mcbride feller resigned, why was,nt he sacked?? Could someone tell me if there was any difference in his settlement package by resigning. Call me a sceptic if you like, but how about, "we,ll let you resign and keep the money if you promise to keep yer mouth shut". I mean its only tax payers money after all, what business is it of ours?

I'm with fJd @ 18 on this. It will be interesting to hear how the BBC aim to help her.

I thought if you resigned you weren't entitled to anything. Given the push he would probably have received another obscene settlement at our expense.
As for nurse item, they 'got' her over confidentiality, it seems. Panorama oughtto have seen that coming - why didn't they conceal the patients' faces?

Dear mr horse, thanks for that, you are clearly better informed on this subject than I. Though it does stick in my craw that he was paid from the public purse, and handsomely too. Does anyone out there remember the Saturday essay on radio 4 years ago by Frederick Forsyth, about new labours destuction of the civil service. I,d love to hear that again.
