The Glass Box for Tuesday.

Post categories:

Eddie Mair | 16:50 UK time, Tuesday, 14 April 2009

glasschain.JPG

The Glass Box is where the PM team meets in at 18.00 every weeknight to discuss the content of the programme.

We try to be honest with each other, but not hurtful, as we talk about what worked and what didn't...what met our expectations and what fell short.

This virtual glass box is where you're encouraged to take part in the same spirit. PM's editor Roger Sawyer will read your comments and may well add his own.

    Hi,

I was a bit disappointed with the Milliband interview. 24 hours is not a long time, why is it a big deal if it took that long for the culprit to leave his post? There are more important issues here about political culture and spin that I think could have been explored -- it seems unlikely that this was a one-off. Things that might have come out with a bit more back-and-forth, not hammering on one point.

One of the things I like about PM is its more relaxed and discursive (as opposed to argumentative) style compared to Today. In summary, Mr Mair, please don't turn into John Humphreys!

Of course the Mcbride emails are disgusting and inexcusable. But this kind of thing is nothing new - as some of your political journalists will be well aware the most appalling stories about Gordon Brown [among others] have been commonplace for 20 years among those who like to think they're 'in the know', and we know where they came from. That doesn't justify Mcbride for a moment but let's not assume the other lot have clean hands.

Oh great - 25 minutes of anti-government radio! What an excellent start to the programme tonight. 25m of attack on the government without much reply(he could barely get a word in edgeways could he Eddie!). This included a former alcoholic explaining why the government is wrong again!
I am not a member of the Labour party - didn't vote Labour at the last election and won't at the next one either.
But here are my puny suggestions for a programme that might generate a little more light and a little less heat.
    1) A presenter who speaks less than the poor sod put up to defend the government. Might be nice if he can finish his reply(or at least the first phrase) before he in treated with scorn or ridicule.
    2) Social issues like alcoholism dealt with by a discussion that might involve several different perspectives - a family member who has suffered as a result of alcolholism; a counsellor who helps alcoholics and perhaps even a government advisor. Perhaps the main of the discussion might be to find out what works rather than just another excuse to tell the government why they are worng again!
When was the last time the PM programme thought the government(of any political hue) got something right in the last twenty years? Go on - name that programme!

This evening PM featured a lengthy interview with the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Ed Milliband.
Energy and Climate Change are arguably the most important issues facing humankind. Many people believe we're facing a global energy and climate change catastrophe.
So what did we learn about these vital issues? Absolutely nothing. Instead the whole interview was about some ridiculous so-called "email scandal" which will be entirely forgotten by next week.
Meanwhile, the humble You and Yours programme today gave us an excellent full hour discussing UK energy policy (strangely, Mr Milliband was absent). For any PM listeners who would prefer to hear about serious issues rather than synthetic "scandals", I recommend the You and Yours podcast.

I think the Miliband interview was the Beeb at it's best. Mr Miliband was consistently kept-off his own tack and agenda and was clearly struggling at times. Can't ask for more much more than from investigative journalism.

    Eddie's "Frost/Nixon" day looms large...

I believe you're right, for James Purnell it was a timing issue. To the extent I believe that on the Govts. latest Alcohol/Drug addiction "initiative", Mr Purnell is un-likely to appear on PM for a forthright exchange of views any time soon...

All in all, a very worthwhile programme I thought. On the matter of timing of the prog editor's comments I must say I prefer a "later" post by which time Bloggers have had the opportunity to comment and the editor to read, consider and then offer her/his thoughts and, as you have today, explanations.
