What's YOUR news?

Eddie Mair | 12:30 PM, Thursday, 4 December 2008

Every week on iPM we take time to hear what our listeners are up to. Here's Jennifer and me doing the headlines last week.

Add BBC Radio 4: PM to your page

If you can sum up YOUR week in a sentence, why not send it to iPM@bbc.co.uk. Please don't post anything here - we want to keep the news fresh for Saturday!

Eddie, did you know you're a dead ringer for John Humphry?

Oh, and, Eddie, where's yesterday's newsletter?

Perhaps I should post on the iPM link:

This week I waited endlessly for Eddie Mair to send out his Wednesday newsletter. It never came.

    ;o)

Eddie- this "investigating" you're going to do. Have you got a warrant for that?

(I didn't get a newsletter yesterday either, but you know how I hate to complain...Anyway, as it's now Thursday, lets just let bygones be bygones, shall we, Big Sis? Water under the bridge and all that?) ;-)

OK, anyone who *did* get a newsletter on Wednesday speak up now?

In RL it is still Autumn.

The chocalate brown leaves curled up in gutters everywhere, here, match the stains of snow here lying like white industrial wounds on the pavements.

They may not make a chocolate box top or may not be pretty enough to make a PM blog site (unprompted by this).

However, both are beautiful, like a visual version of what that Feiler fella was trying to get at.

The austere beauty of cooling towers in winter, of Concorde in flight, and the aromatic smell of tobacco are all now all condemned because what they are is condemned, socially.

P'haps Feiler's point is that we can always switch his racket off.

Karen Matthews may have been 'stupid and naive', but no-one has mentioned the other high profile child abduction case, which no doubt she thought she could copy. When Madeleine McCann was abducted public sympathy flowed AND money - not for the parents, but for a search fund, an entirely different matter. Karen Matthews may well have tried simply to copy this awful situation, without 'losing' her child. A 'happy ending' along with a very large sum of money must have seemed irresistible for her to try to have her own child not only abducted, but also drugged. Greed prevented her from thinking it through and rejecting it as wholely unthinkable. To assume that she would have been able to share the reward!! is the downfall of many who try to do something illegal.

Agree with the point about 'pure evil' - this is a fatuous use of hyperbole when one compares it to the crimes of Peter Tobin, about whom such a description might have more validity.

Good gracious - you're right B S and D McN! When (and how??) did I become John Humphreys?

Eddie. Eddie! I'm sorry, but I wish to register a complaint. I am NOT John Humphreys (or rather, he isn't me) on the Harp update thread.

AND - I'd just put the link to that thread on my Xmas newsletter to unfortunate friends and relatives. They're going to think I've completely lost the plot... Is this a case of vanity being its own reward? (Of course, I only put in the link in an ironic, post-modernist way, not in any blowing-own-trumpet way, naturally... Just to evangelise the blog world-wise, as it were) ;-)

No doubt Karen Matthews will be thrown in the slammer, and probably rightly so, but it will do nothing to solve the problem of the neglect of the children of the underclass in the UK today (I speak as a former member of that class who is now a university lecturer). Maybe a string for this blog might be a discussion about how we break the cycle of deprivation and degradation which creates a Karen Matthews or whether the chavs/lumpenproletariat/underclass will simply always be with us?
