Trumpet blowing.
Some time ago, two terrific people I'd worked with previously on a Radio 4 documentary suggested I might be interested in making a documentary about Lionel Bart.
Frankly, Jo Coombs and Stewart Henderson (perhaps you know him from Radio 4's Questions, Questions) could suggest a show about paint drying and I would jump at it because they are just brilliant to work with.
Anyhoo, the show - the fruit of their labours more than mine - airs this Saturday on Radio 4. You can get a flavour of it here.

Yes, there was another trumpet player called Eddie, wasn't there? Eddie Calvert, if I remember correctly.
I think the documentary will be very interesting, as I gather Mr. Bart's star fell very rapidly towards the end of his life, yet the musical 'Oliver' remains a great hit. Complex man, I gather.

Well I'll be listening. It sounds fascinating. Incredible to think someone so brilliant can have made such a fortune and lost it again so quickly. I went to see "Oliver" a few years ago when it was on in Manchester, and found it so sad I cried through most of it. I think a lot of those shows you watch as children don't have the full emotional impact until you are grown-up with children yourself. Then the full horror of a child being left as an unloved orphan is realised.

Eddie! Sing us a song.

Maybe we could edit it into a jam-session-stylee version of the Froggers' Song.

I heard the trailer the other night and thought it sounded good. And Mrs Eff (4)yes do hope it involves Eddie giving us a rendition of one of Lionel's best! I shall be listening!
