I spent some time yesterday

Eddie Mair | 13:21 UK time, Wednesday, 3 December 2008

at a cash machine, waiting for the partially sighted person in front of me to complete her transaction. She had someone to help her but it still seemed a terrible faff for her.

As it happens, iPM is looking at this very thing. If you're partially sighted or you know someone who is - there's an item that may be of interest to you. If so, please follow this link and add your comment on the iPM page.

We (full sighted) take so many things for granted.

By the way, they're talking about Twitter at the moment. Reminds me of an earlier PM experiment. Should we all be tweeting here?

I'll be listening, although I'm hopeful that my mum's second cataract operation on the day before Christmas Eve will bring her back into the realm of the fully sighted. All crossed fingers gratefully received.

Cat, your mum has my very best wishes. My mum has had ops on both eyes, also for glaucoma. Sadly, the experts had left it too long and one eye was too damaged to be fully saved. I thought of her when reading Eddie's post.

Cat, all good wishes to your mum. Two people I know have had both eyes operated on for cataracts in the last year or so, and both have had complete success with both eyes, so let's hope things go in threes!

As far as the cash-machine business goes, I am lucky enough to have reasonably good sight so long as I am wearing the spectacles to correct the damage done by measles long ago, but I find such machines often to be very hard to see, if the light shining on or near them isn't just right, so I shudder to think what those screens must be like for anyone with partial vision.

    Thanks Big Sis, Chris.

On the cash machine thing, often they're very difficult to see - I think direct sunlight fades the screen. Round my way though more of a problem is people smearing erm... stuff all over the screen and keypad. Sauce-covered chips is the least offensive, but still nasty if you don't quite see it and stick your fingers in it.

Perhaps a reversal of the trend away from actual bank branches and real people to help you might be helpful? Never happen though.
