Nothing but horrible wind and rain in southern Derbyshire, though plenty of snow in the Peaks according to local radio.

It's pouring with rain here, and very dark.
However, I DID hear Santa ho-ho-ho-ing down my chimney last night!
The Round Table were doing the rounds last night, and a quirk of ground levels meant that Santa's voice and music were funnelled down my chimney from the housing estate behind my house.
I'll try and get a photo when he visits my street next week.

No! Wind, rain and gloom in the Northwest, sadly. But we're waiting with baited breath for Father Christmas to arrive by helicopter to the hospital nextdoor, it's usually the first week in December ...

Not so much snow, as freezing rain.

What happened to all the grit bunkers on the steep roads?

Push 3 cars off ice this morning. Watched 1 car slither into a van.

Ordered 2 winter typres. Pick them up at 2pm if it melts enough.

    (7) - Sis - With my hands! We have about 1 inch thick ice on the side roads. The main roads are just slush. I pushed our car back next to the house and walked to the bus. Fields and roofs are still covered in snow.

Gosh, JF, it's pretty arctic up your way by the sounds of things! Here in (sunny) Sussex, we had torrential rain for most of the night and into the morning, but the sun has returned and it is a nice day (from the inside of the house), if rather cold and windy. I'll venture out soon, well wrapped up.

Rain this morning - about 5 degrees according to my thermometer. Now, looking out of the office window, plenty of greyish cumulus with blue sky in between.

We've just had an hour-long power cut. Suddenly made us realise how dependent we are on electricity. Couldn't heat water (tepid cofee - yuk) or have any light, it was getting darker by the minute. Couldn't even make mpb do piano practice, as it's an electric keyboard. Couldn't go on the computer, or hoover the floor. Scared to open fridge in case everything defrosted. Never has an hour seemed so long! When the power came back on, all the neighbours' burglar alarms went off.

Yesterday south Manchester was gridlocked owing to series of accidents on motorways - shame we didn't know that before we headed out to join the chaos. There were people arriving at the stately home (candlelit evening opening - power cuts no problem there!) where I was playing who had been 2 and 3 hours in coaches to get there, for a journey that should have taken an hour at most.

    Strange times...

    (10) Sis - Winter tyres fitted. Wonderful difference to the car.

Only fitted winter front tyres. Parked on a steep road and the car started to slide. Rear wheel hand brake. Put it in gear.

Went looking for rock salt. No one had any. Council will not supply any. I do not mind paying I just want some one to stock it.

jf 13, Winter tires? WINTER TIRES!!?? (OK, jonnie, tyres) We average 60 inches of snow per winter in the Cleveland, Ohio area and I had all weather tires on year round.

Rock salt on the road. A good way to rust out the body of your car.

JF: I've always been able to get it from Wickes, or one of the other DiY places - but I tend to get it towards the end of summer as supplies run out!

Glad you're pleased with your tyres, though. I used to have them fitted on the back to stop the car sliding, but that was in the days when I lived in the States and ran a 1974 Cadillac, which was built like a tank ...... Memories!

McN, it cost me the princely sum of $100, which I shared with another work pal. It was gold, it was beautiful, and it did about 8 miles to a US gallon. But I loved it.

DMcN, winter certainly tires. Some in N Yorks are probably tired of it already.

btw, I thought a caddy was something you kept tea in. Or summat to do with golf.

    Or there's this:

My Johnnie is a handsome laddie
And though he is Dumbarton's caddie
    Some day I'll be a captain's lady
When Johnnie tends his vows to me.

Anyone for a sing-song? I learned this from the inimitable (imo, but in this case I'm right) Jean Redpath
