"My son was at university in Galway and we had to stop the car on the way there* the first time when we passed this in the corner of a public playing field. The local community are clearly very religious but, as we came around the bend in the road to find the words "Holy Mother of God" blazened across the sky, the message seemed to pertain rather more to my driving than to Mother Mary. I'm making Christmas cards out of it this year. Lady Sue.

*In truth, I screeched to a halt and had a serious laughing fit."

But as its the Holy Trinity, She is mother to part of this, so ergo she is the mother of God. Now I do not want a theological discussion.

The status of Mary rather depends on how you view the paternity of her son...

If you believe God was his dad, then I suppose Mary could be regarded as mother of (one form of) God.

If, on the other hand, you believe the father was a human... (probably Joseph, possibly A. N. Other - but let's not get into that side of the paternity dispute - after all, getting hold of DNA samples is going to be a bit tricky after all these years...)

Of course, a mistranslation by Matthew and the oddity of betrothal being legally binding (and requiring a divorce to end) don't help matters... (insert roll eyes emoticon here)

Then of course in four months' time we'll be debating whether his execution was fatal, and if so, whether he rose again... :)

Thrilled to have made the Advent Calendar and so glad you have enjoyed it!

Think illumination an excellent idea - will suggest when next passing, or might even sneak over with some fairy lights for the Festive Season.

FAIRY lights? Not quite the right terminology here.

    (8) Why ever not? Don't people put fairy lights on Christmas trees? Admittedly, they wouldn't be as effective as full illumination but I was going for a Seasonal look.

    Perhaps a burning bush?

    (10) Ah, Vyle, I note your distinction. I was thinking of those tiny little lights, not the coloured, flashing bulbs.

Do they share the same name?

I think flashing lights would be good, Lady Sue, and would increase the impact upon unsuspecting drivers like yourself ;o)

But, failing that, a burning bush could be very effective.

    (12) Thanks Big Sis, good suggestions.

I'm surprised no-one has come up with a burning 'George W' Bush effigy for just such an opportunity.

Perhaps not entirely in line with the Christmas spirit.

BTW: Did you ever discover what was significant about 12 December?

Christmas Lights are lights that are used at Christmas - fairy, flashing, coloured or whatever.

Lady_Sue - I'd drape a lot of fairy lights over that tree behind her, or is that the bush that Big Sis wants to burn?

    (16) David: the eyes don't need to follow you, you know she's watching.

I think the 'little person next to her' is a 'Child of Prague' - supposed to bring luck before a wedding and, according to local tradition here, to ward off the rain if you put it outside. You don't see many of them as they get washed away.

    (17) Loon: Good idea. I'll see what I can do.

    (20) David: you are on the Advent Calendar bit of the PM Blog.

DMcN @ 22, in the bit that is down the right-hand side of the screen in the format I get (but may be somewhere else on your set-up) there is a large section called 'Categories' which starts with the F.A.Q. and has 'SPECIAL: Advent 2007' and 'SPECIAL: Advent: 2008' as numbers 12 and 13 down it.

If you go to the Advent 2008 bit of it and click there, you are offered the three Advent pictures and the comments on them, without all the other threads that have been put up between them.

    HTH, HAND. :-)
