The Beach.
Oh most beautiful Beach of the programme PM,
Where the Froggers congregate even though you can't see them,
With camels and surf and castles of sand,
As a refuge from woes and seriousness it was planned,
With a bar in memory of a presenter most grand,
And imag'nery sun to get most safely tanned,
Renewed by our host, most every Friday,
Visitor, relax and enjoy, and please keep it tidy.

a power cut this morning has delayed my arrival onto the beach. it also means no croissant, but i do have an enormous amount of milk and yoghurt to be consumed so cereals aplenty and milky tes/coffee.chocolat chaud on the bar.
unfortunately the back up generator at work seems to be doing ok. which seems slightly unfair.

The bar is named in memory of the late and much missed Radio 4 broadcaster Nick Clarke. He used to present 'The World at One' before his untimely death. He and 'The World at One' featured in an episode of the Quandary Phase of the HitchHiker's Guide To The Galaxy radio series, alongside Sir Patrick Moore!

Off to Durdle Door and the old Bill.
With the strains of harp in my ears and taste of a very dry white (ferment of the grape Vitis Gillianianis) on my lips.
The mermaid, that ambiguous icon, will greet us. (Is she proof of the promiscuity of patriarchal sailors or of their faithfulness to those they left behind 'lonely 'pon the Liverpool sand')
(And tonight, the Pub Landlord versus G. Greer (HIGNFY?). Shades of Big Sis v. Jimmy Giro (late of this blog))
Off then to where all is held in common (a Beach and an evening with the BBC (5, 6.30, 8.00, radio 4, 9, HIGNFY,) and even C4 in its/it's way, where the IT crowd live.

Afternoon everyone - just got back from a pub quiz (of sorts) - something to do with "Learning at Work Fortnight" (which I thought was a couple of months ago) - and held in the council chamber. Eight rounds of 12 questions: Sport, History, Natural world, Cats and dogs, Christmas, TV, Film, Christmas; plus pictures (24 photocopied pics of famous people to attempt to identify) and lyrics (24 rhyming couplets - identify the singer and song). The team I was on came 5th out of 21.
I suppose I'd better start doing something that looks vaguely like work - don't want to be seen to have apparently wasted the entire day :)

As for the blog's quirks, don't enter the letter between j and l unless accompanied by at least two letters, don't type ampersands (it used to allow you to add "amp;" but not any more!), and don't type a pound sign or any accents - they will be accepted and initially look OK - until you refresh the page, whereupon they'll be mangled.
(I think what's happening in this case is the input comment box uses one character set, the blog displays using another...)
However, I think you can still get away with making your text bold / strong or italicised / emphasised, and you can insert the occasional hyperlink to elsewhere...

GM -(65) I thought she was lending him out to anyone who didn't have an electric blanket. Wasn't the phrase "in need of a winter warmer"? I mean, in these days of high electricity bills, he could probably be rented out as the Economy 7 alternative to an expensive electric blanket. Mincing extra, of course. How about it Fi? (It's a good job your SO doesn't read this blog, isn't it?) :-)
Sympathies on the cold church. Nothing so miserable as hypothermia and wooden pews. I bet the single toilet in the church was freezing too. They always are. I was luxuriating in the relative warmth of Leeds University Great Hall. Was interested to read their energy efficiency certificate on the wall - apparently they have a score of 23, which is excellent. A normal building of that age and size would have a score of 100. Can't understand it. The radiators were barely on, but the whole place was warm. Amazing architecture too. All tiles, stained glass, grand staircases, bespoke carpet (echoing mosaic floor pattern). A Victorian gem.

Where do these morning's go? I'm in a bit of a grumpy mood, mostly down to it taking me two hours to get in to work today.
Weekend was an interesting mix. Mrs Wonko and I were looking after next door's dog while they had a weekend break. Fortunately our dog gets on very well with her, even though she is considerably younger and much more bouncy! We took them both to Bury St Edmonds on Saturday for the Christmas Market.
Met up with some pals there, bought and eat some lovely food and generally had a good (if rather cold) time. Two of our friends are having building work done at the moment, including a large new section of roof. So, after dinner we all climbed up the scaffolding ladders in the dark and cold for a "topping out" ceremony!
Yesterday was rather quieter, taking the dogs out for a walk in the morning and then giving them both a bath in the afternoon as they were very muddy!
Oh well, better get on with today I suppose. Any suggestions for lunch?

A FAREWELL WAVE.
I have seen more realistic representations of flight
Than the implausible flight of the hovering gull
In the scarcely fluttering wooden toys with whirring paper wings,
Whip-driven by small boys pulling hard on tightly wound strings.
Black headed gulls in careless, still formation, twelve perhaps more,
Guard the Victorian shelter, cast iron and glass, on Weymouth promenade.
A handful of breadcrumbs thrown high into the air,
Each piece taken on the wing, the bird in an upward curve
Like a dolphin surfacing,
In their flotilla stillness they threaten the hands we use to feed them.
Hitchcock understated the aggression in their beaks and
Beady eyes.
But their wings are almost silly
In their flimsy excessive exertion
And their bodies in poetic perfection.
Motionless.

I think it was "a donation" to my department from another department. I suspect that the journey to us was shorter than the journey to the appropriate bin.
She has a certain quirky charm to her. Her legs seem to have been damaged as she fell off the tree one year. She now looks as though she is desperate for the little angel's room.
We did put her up next to our red flashing Rudolph poster on year. The poster fell down leaving a dodgy looking angel next to a red light. Could have given completely the wrong impression...

A colleague asked me the other day if I was getting all "Christmassy" and I had to say no. I guess it's a left over from my (lapsed) Methodist upbringing, but for me Christmas is really about the period from Christmas Eve - perhaps stretching to the Sunday before - through to twelfth night. The period buiklding up to is Advent, not a shopping expedition. Even as a child I hated the plastic, shop based kind of Christmas I saw even then. It feels like it's ten times worse now, though I'm sure a fair part of that impression is just me being a miserable old so and so. And don't get me started on office parties...

But it is Advent, and there are lovely traditions associated with that time of waiting before the day of Christ's birth (sorry, don't mean to come over all 'holy', but that is what the celebration is actually about). So, out with the Advent candle, and on with the preparations that need to be done in advance. Christmas tree will be bought in the next three weeks and, like Anne and her family, put up and decorated on Christmas Eve.
It is the steps towards Christmas that make the actual day so special, don't you think?

Now where's the chocolate? [begins rummaging in the fridge]

The angels are bound to be reunited after Christmas. Pathology were reluctant to accept the twin initially but didn't want to be accused of not getting into the spirit of the season.
We're after names for the twins at the moment - they need names! Currently the suggestion list includes Hinge and Brackett and Dastardly and Muttley.

Does her twin also have a gammy leg and cross eyes, Karen? This information is important in the naming process ...

Thelma and Louise?

Newton and Ridley?

BigSis - We kept the prettiest one! The twin has a skirt that flies up indecently too as well as the thing going on with the eyes and legs
Complain about this comment
Well, they're both a couple of floozies by the sounds of it, though the skirt flying up one should perhaps be called Marilyn (after Monroe, of course), and perhaps the other could be called Judy, after Judy Holliday, who could cross her eyes.

If I was clever enough I'd get photos of them for you all. No clue how to get it posted though. The poor girls are obviously not suitable for Eddie's classy Advent photos.
Complain about this comment
Karen, I think they'd be perfect subjects for the Advent Calendar, and now that Eddie has blessed them by joining in the naming game, I can't see how he could refuse, can you?
Mind you, you might have to call them Newton and Ridley. Eddie's clearly a Corrie fan.

I'll see what I can manage tomorrow ;o)
She's currently stuck (I haven't asked how) to our home made Christmas Tree Advent Calendar with a pharmacy theme(!)
There's a Christmas Tree competition at work and we're desperate to win. I'm pinning my hopes on Newton...
Eddie - I'll understand if she gets bumped for a prettier scene.

Classy Advent calendar. Am I in the wrong place

Hi all and bye all. I've enjoyed this for a couple of years and I'll talk to others elsewhere but I won't post here any more - under any of the names I've used. I'll continue to listen to PM, because it is much too good to miss.

How do you follow *that* !!?!!? (129)
All I can do is quote from another frogger:
"Where feeble hope could ne'er have flown,
But vainly flapped her tinsel wing"
and add:
"Stands dew-eyed charity, unknown
bedecked in tinsel, spare bare bling"
but the beach looks wonderful tonight, with the mysterious moonbeams dancing on the rippling waves...

Oh, feefs, I do like haggis; it may be corny since I no longer live in Scotland, but I really do. Better than black or white pudding any day. Save some for me, whatever the excuse.
n-n, Fabbitty-dabbity! Love it! Is that all your own making?
In fact [wait for it......] marvellous! [clue: Ed]

Is this Lapland?
I always imagined it was like Mount Everest near the summit, littered with cola cans, beer cans, abandoned snow shoes, dead explorers and empty tents.
Well, it isn't. But this Beach does look too much like a Star Trek cast reunion picnic (without the ageless Uhura) for its own good. (With mine host looking like a Kirk look alike - his double in just a few short years to come. (Is that really a group of blog groupies (bloopies) getting him to sign their copies of the Radio Times?))
Far too many chocoholics and alcofrolics, On the Beach.
Not enough star gazers, full of wonder, or people thrilling to the strains in their own bodies when pitted against sand, sea and tide.
A fair (sprout) wind seems as close to nature as some, here, get.

('Kirk to Mare. You are increasing in resemblance to me at warped factor 9. This cannot be right. As I am now, should take you 32 earth years to get here. But at this rate, you will be here in as many months, even days. Captain Harkness has exposed a weakness of yours (Thinking you cannot be seen on the wireless). St Alban's bone (as worshiped by McN) may now be your only hope of rejuvenation. Let's hope not.')

I'm up late, waiting for tomorrow's soup to get to the stage I can leave it; so filling time where I know it'll be well filled.
Faith, hope have gone; mere charity remains
And on the cruelty of man she chills her blains

According to my sources it's MadMary's birthday on Friday. (Who remembers her? Started out as MaryMary and then during Dayone she transmogrified into her true self!)
I'm happy to send her any greetings/prezzies/drinks/wishes you have for her, if not already connected via some other sociable wotsit off-lilypad.
I miss her.

I just have to ask - Q L - why? Have I missed something? Have you been moderated one too many times and your patience has finally snapped? Has the credit crunch impacted to such an extent that you can't afford the electricity to run your computer? I mean - why why WHY???

Afternoon All!
QL - Was it something we said? Anyhoo, fare thee well if we don't see you here again.
Must chip in on the subject of haggis. I love it - have had it battered and deep fried, and it was delicious. Whenever Mrs Wonko and I go to Scotland we try and stock up with decent haggis as the offering from our local Tesburyaswaitsonsfield is somewhat below par. Hmmm, may have to get some now.
I'm having a horrid day in RL, which has been brightened somewhat by the receipt of a bonus in the form of vouchers. Is it too early to open the gin?
;o) []

Wonko, for me it's always too early for gin, but if there's a brandy or a single malt around, I'll be happy to join you!

The baby wipes have come in useful but I am now wondering whether a spoonful of cement with the LookoZaid would help!
Wonko, so glad to hear that the Saga vouchers have arrived! Just don't spend them all on Sprouts and Sprout accessories!

DIY - I'm delighted to be able to inform you that siad vouchers are in fact for a high street music, DVD and games vendor whose name is a three letter accronyn. Other places to spend ill gotten gains on spectacular, if entertaining, wastes of time are available.

Better ask the Young Macallan. He still (ahem) around? I grant you there's a big selection behind the bar so I'll bow more to experts.
But I do think the official malt should be Leapfrog... in fact Islay a bet on that.*

Hi All. I haven't forgotten about the photo of Newton on her handmade Xmas tree. I fear that I may have caught whatever DiY had. Though come to think of it, I did start to feel really unwell after the whole Shatner experience on Tuesday night...

Probably Norovirus - not a happy experience I believe. Poor you lot. I'm sure there's relief on the beach in the Fifi quarrantine area.
