Christmas is coming...

Eddie Mair | 12:46 UK time, Wednesday, 26 November 2008

and we want your advent photo. Send it to pm@bbc.co.uk, and please put ADVENT in the subject line.

To inspire you, this photo is just in - you'll have to trust me on this - from a Senior Member of our Editorial Team (acting) Rupert. He's attending some conference or other in Frankfurt of all places...but even when he's so far away, Rupert is thinking of the Blog, as you can see. I don't think he's IN this photo.

Did anyone else hear the Today programme this morning with that eejit Bishop who was saying that everyone should send cards and go out and "really enjoy choosing and buying special presents for all their family and friends"?

Does he have a clue what it's like to have no money AT ALL and be faced with Christmas?

Greeting cards are the worst manifestation of consumerism gone mad and I can't think how a man in his position can be foolish enough to be actively putting pressure on people to feel they have to buy everyone they know a present for Christmas.

L_S 5, The Bishop was probably pushing cards sold in his Cathedral. I send around 7-8 cards, and only to the US.

It's an odd time, isn't it? The pressure to be visibly all festive (I put my tree or other decor up on Xmas Eve and it comes down on 12th night, but that's because it was that way in my childhood and it made things a bit more focused, perhaps... or maybe it's just sentiment... I don't know. But it works)

Still, I noticed the first outdoor tree lights last night.

They are beautiful. Scatterings of colour in the denuded trees whose last pretty leaves have fallen.

    (7) David: perhaps you are right. I don't usually send cards at all but, like you, tend to do so only to those I live away from.

When I worked in a busy London office I was always amazed at how everyone felt obliged to give everyone else they worked with and saw every day a card. I was told it was "instead of a present".

Does that mean they don't love you enough to give you a present? Couldn't people just say, "Happy Christmas" to each other, call to see folk or ring people up - especially the elderly.

It's supposed to be the season of goodwill, not the season of "goods".
