Autumn's message on our collective answering machine...
The debate about Russell Brand etc continues below. Not too late to add your comment to the hundreds received...do have a read.
Meanwhile, after an item a few weeks ago, PM listeners started sending in their photos of autumn. Every day we publish more on the Blog...
"The road outside our office...Best wishes, Vyle Hernia."

Rob says "Here is a photo of my son, Adam, playing in the leaves on Sunday morning at a local park. The photo was taken with a modern digital camera through the top lense of a 1950's Kodak DuaFlex2 hense the vintage effect."
"This photo was taken in Central Park New York, a touch of Autumn from Christine Cook Somerset"
"Westonbirt Arboretum. Sat 18th Oct. David Jones"
"Dear Eddie - I took this at Stourhead Gardens today. Patricia Burns"

"Dear Eddie and Co. Berries at the bottom of our garden (Salfords Surrey), Regards, Debbie White "
"This is Hampton Court - where I live. Well 20 mins walk away over Bushy Park. Saw these from the bus; you prompted me to walk over the park to take the pictures. Thank you! John Webb"...who also sends this: "Not many bright colours yet in this part of west London - whatever or wherever that is - but this fine beast surely deserves a place on the blog."
"Autumn with moon: From Cherry Heywood-Jones"
From John Maunder: "Picture taken from my garden overlooking the Tamar Valley to Devon from Cornwall. Chimney Rock Gunnislake."

We got this last week too: "This was taken on the Isle of Skye, Scotland at the weekend. Not exactly Autumnal colours, but a fast approaching shower of rain, that did soak us a few minutes later. Lorraine Gifford"
"Jephson Gardens in Leamington Spa. Garry Byles, Coventry"

I suggest that the BBC treat Brand and Ross in the same way some of those other Mandarins are treated namely professional footballers who are either given a hefty fine or transferred. At the same time the producers who allowed the recording to be broadcast should be rewarded for exposing the behind the pc facade of how these characters behave.
Those who say or act in a certain way are the ones responsible!

Dear Sirs,
Although I didn't hear the infamous telephone messages to Andrew Sachs, I have certainly heard enough both on the Today programme and PM, to comment on them.
The BBC, which I listen to most days, have a responsibility to all its listeners, not just the young, who accept bad language without turning a hair. The remarks made on the Today programme this morning, indicating that if everything was scrutinized what a dull place it would be, is completely without foundation. I'm sure most people can accept anything when its included in drama etc but when its on a so called 'entertainment' programme, then it should be checked. I get sick and tired of these presenters who think they can say anything at all regardless of who is listening and the time of day.
Its about time the BBC started looking at just what is said on some of these programmes and stop thinking it has to revert to what the younger listener wants, (I realise it wants to win these people over but it will do this with the loss of many older listeners, and there are more of these the the former)
I really do think that the likes of Johnathan Ross and Russell Brand should been shown the door (without any compensation, by the way) at least this is a start to making the BBC something like it used to be and not joining the yob culture it is trying to do.

I believe that both Brand & Ross should be sacked from their positions. They're being paid fantastic sums to produce this type of puerile 'comedy' & I'm paying for it!
I seem to recall Angus Deayton being sacked for something done outside the BBC's sphere of control as an employer & which would certainly not have been broadcast except for the paparazzi who thought that we all needed to know... Ross & Brand should be punished with the same stick.

The discussion about Brand and Ross now seems to be turning to the failure of the BBC to stop this going out on air. On the Today programme this morning it was even suggested that people knew what these two clowns are likely to say on their shows and that they are therefore exonorated. What rubbish! They deliberately made offensive nuisance calls to Andrew Sachs. In doing so, they probably broke the law, and certainly broke the boundaries of decent behaviour. Whether these calls had been broadcast or not, they are grounds for dismissal.

I am very happy to pay a licence fee to the BBC each year for the many excellent programmes BUT I am outraged to think that a portion of this fee is being paid to the likes of Ross and Brand through obscenely huge salaries. The BBC must act to stop this now. Legal proceedings should proceed.

mittfh, jonnie: that would be fine except that the 'bullies' thread you mention has now become too large for this machine to cope with, and simply crashes the program every time I go near it.
This is going to be a great nuisance if I want to access any thread that was posted before it, because 'previous' means 'crash' if I press it from here. I can do it via 'Glass Boxes' and careful 'next', but I know that I shall forget to do that several times at least before everything earlier than this becomes of no further interest.
Meantime, anyone who tries to go there and finds it too large to access will probably come here, because the chances are they won't be able to get to yesterday's Glass Box easily either, especially if they are new to the blog and don't know their way around it as regulars do.

And (peevish!) it really doesn't help that about half the other threads seem to be called just 'Autumn', so I can't tell which one will land me at the Ross and Why? thread and make everything go belly-up when I press 'next' from it.
Bah, and probably Humbug.

Thought not!
How far do people have to go before something is done about such purile and offensive behaviour.
I would imagine Russell Brand's sudden volte face has more to do with him realising his career is going down the pan. Much like his comment re the Jonas Brothers at the MTV awards the only way to hurt people like him is to starve him of the oxygen of publicity and for him to lose contracts and get jobs cancelled.
They used to call it public shunning.

The rights and wrongs of this broadcast can be argued as is currently underway. The fact remains that these two idiots, both highly paid by the tax payer, have showed their true colours. The fact that they took advantage of an elderly man, held in esteem by many, shows they have no respect for anyone.
Their contracts should be terminated. Why do we tolerate their filth, calling it entertainment. It is time the great British public stood up and said enough is enough.
The BBC used to stand for a great many traditional values, is it now prepared to add "filth" to that list of traditional values?

All I've heard of the Ross/Brand phone call was on Today and PM, but it strikes me that if any of us, ordinary listeners, made offensive phones calls like that to anyone we'd be prosecuted, and rightly so. So why hasn't the law stepped in with these two?

If the BBC really wants to be hip and employ people on massive salaries just to insult people then they could employ me for a fraction of the cost.
In a "deference free" society the very last thing we need is a rallying call for the very worst levels of public behaviour from this couple of sociopaths.

I tried to watch the Jonathon Ross show on Friday evening as I thought it would be interesting to listen to Daniel Craig. Unfortunately and to my great annoyance Ross didn't stop talking and Daniel Craig wasn't allowed to say anything meaningful. To say that the show is total drivel is an understatement and the subsequent news about Ross and Brand committing this unforgivable prank on Radio Two is no surprise. The BBC used to be an institution of which we could all be proud. Not any more. Come on Director General, show some back bone, get rid of these overpaid, under talented morons, get back to responsible broadcasting and start showing a decent example to the young of this once wonderful country.

In the old USENET hierarchy of newsgroups, the "BrandGate" thread is an example of what used to be called a "vampire thread".
Not only does it refuse to die, but it starts spawning more of itself in other threads until the whole newsgroup - or in this case, blog - has turned undead.
Appropriate for Halloween, but not ideal.

Listening to Russell's "apology", I believe has exposed further, his total lack of understanding of the error his has made.
I am also surprised that such "dumb-down" presenters are being given air-time and our fees.
The BBC has no need to get to this low level, there are many other outlets for Russell's stupidity and the program producers who employ them, so cut them lose and regain the moral high ground before it's too late.

Sadly, this whole Brand/Ross affair highlights the demise of BBC TV. It seems that programme producers are prepared to assault the viewer's feelings in ways that are generally considered unacceptable, management do not appear to have any control over programme content and the licence payer is subjected to accepting below par viewing. All in the name of viewing figures!
Well BBC TV, you are continually and consistently producing an ever increasing number of programmes that fail to merit any sort of viewing whatsoever.
I think the overall remedy would be that Parliament remove the Corporation's funding by means of the licence fee. The BBC should be made to stand or fall on its ability to compete fairly with other media outlets.
Licence payers are being taken for a ride!
Finally, sack both Ross and Brand and stop producing such puerile TV programmes.

Andrew Sachs was not on Jonathan Ross' show . He is totally innocent and should not have been humiliated/treated in such a disgusting manner. If it had been a couple of teenagers people would have been rightly outraged. The fact it was done by two grown man in the name of entertainment disgusts me. I am not a great fan of Russell Brand but do enjoy Jonathan Ross' chat show and radio programme. He as a father should know better and I for one feel so strongly that I have just registered to send this blog in the hope that the BBC will sack them both. Russel Brand and Jonathan Ross have alledgerly commited a breach of the Section 43 Telecommunications Act 1984 "sending a message known to be false for the purpose of causing annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety" which was then broadcast to an audience at a later date. Is the role of the BBC to record the possible breaking of the law and then broadcast it as if this is entertainment or funny. The problem for the BBC is in appearing to support this action and not commenting on it from a distance. What is the difference between this behaviour and happy slapping? Boundaries do exist and are there to maintain care. More has to be done than just a silly sorry message which in no way recognises that verbal assault is serious and not a joke. It can come across as abuse and contempt of people and the law to apologise in a frivalous way. What will the BBC do to restore their reputation over this absurd situation? We are not school kids playing games here.

I just wonder if some such celebrity on their program, phoned Woss or Brand and said they had had gratuitous sex with their partners or daughters, Would they find it so amusing? Brand possibly wouldn't care, as his life seem to have been one long trip to depravity. Woss on the other hand, might not like the thought of his wife being used in this manner. And to add to it; imagine how the respective parents of the mentioned women would feel...Humiliated perhaps? And to taunt about hanging yourself...disgusting!
Humour? To have to sink to that to get a laugh. You're sick, and have no place on mainstream TV.

I must agree with the majority of enteries on the blog that the childlike so called 'prank' was both distasteful and hurtful. If this was approved by an editor at the BBC. Then this just shows how far the standards have dropped at the 'beeb'. These two, so called mature men -not only abused their priviledged position in our media to air their hurtful sick humour, but even when Brand so called apologized, he tried to be funny by comparing it with Hitler and nazism and the Daily Mail for its handling of the story
All I can say is I hope they are taken off the air for good.

I thought the show was funny even if it did go a bit far. No real damage was done and it would be ridiculous for the BBC to get rid of their funniest comedians/presenters because of a joke that maybe went a bit wrong. Brand and Ross,
I have found it difficult in the past to understand why on earth either are employed by the BBC.
This latest vicious broadcast attack on Andrew Sachs and his family, of which I have seen a video clip, has only reinforced my low opinion of both Ross and Brand.
I would whole-heartedly endorse any move to have them removed from all BBC broadcasting services. Further, for cancellation of current contracts without compensation, for what can only be considered as a gross breach of acceptable behaviour.
I see that any comments I may make are to be subjected to moderation by the BBC, if there is any content considered unacceptable - the BBC should also live by that tenet.
I would also seek the dismissal of whoever in the BBC approved broadcasting such content in the recorded programme.

Frankly I blame whoever it was back in the mists of the 1980s who told Jonathan Ross he was funny..he isn't, he never has been and his puerile potty-mouthed innuendo has finally been exposed for what it is - nasty, ad hominem filth directed at those he perceives as unable to respond and fawning obsequeious flattery of those further up the celebrity scale than he. He wasn't funny in a student bar 20-odd years ago and he isn't funny now (nor is his sense of humour).. Brand is a talented comedian so it just goes to show that everything Ross touches eventually turns to 3rd rate rubbish. Ross needs the BBC far more than the BBC need him, so please cut him loose at last and regain at least some of the Reithian high ground, not to mention save a shedload of currently ill-spent license money..

I think the Brand/Ross issue raises the question of much wider issues within all forms of broadcasting and the conflicting messages that young people receive. On the one hand there is despair generally at the behavior of large sections of the population with binge drinking, a total disregard for authority and a lack of any inhibition or sense of moderation of behaviour due to societal pressure. On the other hand the media and in particular programmes aimed at the young and certain segments of society celebrate what is really unacceptable behaviour. The Brand/Ross incident is an example of broadcasting where to a large extent it is responding to what it thinks its listeners want rather than setting an agenda that its viewers may or may not want. There are so many tv and radio programmes that to a large extent encourage bad behaviour with no attempt to question it. Perhaps this recent example of appalling bad manners and cruelty will result in this issue being addressed.

The conduct of Brand and Ross is of two silly, spotty, sniggering fifth-formers. They are both of course grown-ups, receiving huge payments from a publicly-owned corporation, whose management was too insensitive, or too dim-witted, to realise that the broadcast of such spoilt-brat behaviour would cause huge offence, not only to their elderly and distinguished victim, but also to the licence-payers in general. We provide the funds to pay both the inflated fees of these two over-rated, not-very-funny comedians, and of course the salaries of the BBC managers themselves. At the very least, surely the BBC official who approved the broadcast of this puerile episode should be publicly identified and dismissed immediately.
Complain about this comment
Mr Ross' and Mr Brand's actions were puerile and intentionally offensive. The large amounts of licence-payers' money paid to these two seem to have made them feel that they can say and do anything they choose. They are after all not callow teenagers but supposedly mature adults and their lack of taste and restraint cannot be excused. BBC executives should take immediate action against these two and demonstrate to the licence-payers that some vestige of standards remains.

The standards of the BBC have been going down for some time, but they have now reach the level of the sewers. Brand and Ross should be sacked immediately along with whoever took the decision to broadcast their rant! This is the only way for the BBC to stop its total decline. Otherwise, the BBC does not deserve our license fees, and I for one will refuse on principle to pay the fees for such an appalling service.

[I thought the show was funny even if it did go a bit far. No real damage was done and it would be ridiculous for the BBC to get rid of their funniest comedians/presenters because of a joke that maybe went a bit wrong]
I must say I entirely fail to see what was remotely "cutting edge" or funny about their tawdry performance on this occasion. Nor have I seen any indication from either of them that they understand how unacceptable the performance was. Andrew Sachs and his granddaughter are real people you know and so far as I am aware had done nothing to warrant the treatment and actually abuse poured on them by these two. Mr Sachs has already sought, very decently I think, to draw a line under the matter although the worst abuse was probably directed at his granddaughter. The "real damage" done, of course, is to the BBC and its reputation.
As for "a joke that maybe went a bit wrong" - words fail me. This was puerile stuff and really just plain nasty, like a lot of Brand and Ross's output, but so much worse than their already very low norm. No doubt they are aware of what their target audience finds amusing but if this is it and it really is appropriate for a mainstream broadcast then we have a serious intelligence [lack of] problem in this country.
I think only a very small minority of the watchers of and listeners to the BBC would agree with you that Brand and Ross are really the "funniest comedians/presenters". Basically because they are just not funny.

PJCW -[You may very well be right. As these people appear to be the vast majority would it not be appropriate for Brand and Ross not to be considered "mainstream"?]
How do you know the opinion of the "vast majority" of people? The views expressed on this page can hardly be said to be representative of the views of every license payer. I'd say a better indicator of what the majority of people find entertaining is found in the viewing and listening figures for Brand's and Ross' TV and radio shows, which are some of the highest of all the BBC's shows. Jonathan Ross is one of the highest paid performers working for the BBC, this cannot be without justification. I'm afraid that people begin to believe that the views of the people they keep around them are representative of the population as a whole, this is rarely the case.
Also, i believe that, if people listen to the broadcast show in full, they will realise that the jokes and comments made by Ross and Brand did not stem from a desire to inflict pain on Mr Sachs, this was not a deliberate malicious attack. They were two comedians trying to make each other laugh, Brand even says in the show something like "i didnt mean it, i was just trying to impress Jonathan Ross". I'm not saying Sachs was over sensitive or that he had no right to be upset but i think we should try to understand why Brand and Ross said these things rather than immedietly label them as vicious and cruel idiots, there is immense evidence in all of their previous work that suggests the contrary. Yes, Mr Sachs deserves an apology and a promise that this will not happen again but no one should lose their job over this.
PJCW-[As for "a joke that maybe went a bit wrong" - words fail me. Bland's attitude, that the issue has been "overblown" is actually indicative of the real problem at the BBC. Not only was it an insult to thousands of listeners but it proved, if proof were needed, that there are people in senior positions who are simply not philosophically equipped to grasp the principles.
Secondly, from time to time Radio 2 masqueraded as a station worth listening to, putting out decent quality blues, country and rock. Could the BBC please desist from this ridiculous, intelligence insulting reliance on the argument that producers are caught between the duty to comply with standards guidelines and the need to be 'edgey' to satisfy its 'target' audience. Intelligent teenagers, let alone 20 and 30 somethings up and down the land should be grossly insulted by the notion that it requires obscenity and vulgarity to attract them. I have an 18 yr old son; we listen to rock etc from the '50's to the present; we share music libraries. If this really is a matter of age, you have a role as educator.....start to fulfil it. Both times I have received an automated response to the effect that my complaint has been construed as a complaint against their telephone prank.
Anyone see the irony here? By the law of averages, it is highly possible that half of the total 'complaints' the BBC has received about the prank call are in fact messages complaining about the subsequent treatement of the two presenters.
Shame, that.
