Inner city life.
Michael Buchanan writes: "What's it like to live in the inner city? Frequently on PM and other media outlets we report the killings and violence that takes place in the inner city. But to what degree does that crime dominate the lives of those who live and work in the inner city? Over several weeks, we asked 3 people in Liverpool, London and Edinburgh to record what it was like to live in the inner city. And over the next 3 nights on PM, we'll be broadcasting what they said. We kick off tonight with Colette Burgess (above), a single mother of 2 who lives in the Anfield district of Liverpool."

Please, where do you mean by 'inner city'? Does the Outer Circle of Regent's Park (which is near the middle of London) count as 'inner', for instance? How about Upton Park, which is so far out it is practically Essex? (Well, it feels that way after the first ten or so stations of the District Line...)

That's a good point Chris.
As I was born and bred in Ilford, I'd say that Upton Park was the suburbs.
To take the central line stations as an example I'd say that 'inner city' would be everything west of Stratford.

I think when they say inner-city it is cockney rhyming slang and on that basis Upton Park would definitely be incorporated

DMcN - you're not from a city, are you? Rhyming slang has to be succinct (is that how you spell it?), like 'Edward 'eath' (teeth). Going through the whole verse of a pop song wouldn't quite fit the bill (or 'up the 'ill'). I'll try one of my not so rude one's for 'inner city' on the modders - how about 'feeling shitty'? ;+)

I've just been on iPlayer to listen to the interview with Colette, and though I don't live in the same area of Liverpool I did work there for 12 years and all our clients were on benefits so we saw a good slice of Anfield life. While I was there there were 2 murders within half a mile of our surgery, one on our doorstep.
There was always a percentage of (especially young lads, but not always) who were rude, aggressive, drugged-up and somethimes pretty scarey. But we also had very many lovely clients who were struggling hard to make ends meet, and the shopping street at the end of our road was always buzzing and had a good community spirit.
I totally agree with Colette about the spending of money in Liverpool city centre which has covered a lovely green space with concrete and shifted all the big shops half a mile down the road, leaving the old heart of Liverpool city centre half empty. Other Capital of Culture projects do seem to have captured the heart though, like the superlambanas which popped up all over the cit in different guises and are now being auctioned off for charity (try g**gling superlambanana if you haven't got a clue what I'm on about!)
In my area also, we have gangs of kids roaming the streets til midnight. In my view the government needs to put much more money into small local projects to inspire these kids and give them something to do, making them involved with local people and the community, rather than alienated from it.
