And Eddie Mair is here, and I'm here, and everyone else on the PM Blog is here .... but what has that to do with the Olympics?
Complain about this comment
Phew, Olympic fever has really taken hold here.

Oh, have they started?

C_G 3, Have what started?

Cracking fireworks!

Having watched it twice, it does make me wonder how Boris et al are going to 'better' that!

DMcN @ 4, all the mead-jar folk going on about people doing whatever floats their respective boats in China somewhere.

When does the beach volleyball start?

I have to say -for once- the HD Sky BBC stream of the opening ceremony was just awe inspiring!
Whether we will approach anything remotely similar in 2012 -as Ken Livingstone on LBC was saying is neither here nor there! - but for sheer televisual viewing it was worth High definition surcharges - or even the normal bog standard licence fee! - Astounding stuff!
I hope tose who didn't have the chance in seeing it in HD will do so in a few years time!
Awe inspiring.
Thank you BBC for making that feed available!

You mean Britain is not going to spend 80 billion dollars on a two week sporting event the way China did? What are you going to waste that money on, the NHS or something?
Complain about this comment
C_G 7, I make mead. Used to be a beekeeper. Although you really can't keep them if they decide to leave.

DI_W 5, and very good for the atmosphere.

jonnie 9, I have better things to spend my money on than HD TV, like food.
Complain about this comment
David (12) I am the first for having a good moan about the Chinese, but your little dig about the atmospheric ramifications of a few fireworks appears a little petty.
Complain about this comment
Tbird 14, As the Chinese invented fireworks, I suppose it's OK for them to pollute the atmosphere with them. It just adds to the smog already there.
How about this: Russian air strikes hit residential buildings in Georgia. But that's all right, because only Americans are expected to be perfect with their bombs.
Complain about this comment
Tbird 14, Are you listening to The Now Show? Write and complain.
Complain about this comment
David (15) I take your point but they are just a bit of fun....
Didn't you see a couple of opposition politicians tied to the larger rockets?
However how can it be alright for Russian bombs to hit civilian targets, and what has it got to do with American so called accuracy? I can't see what you mean....

Tbird 17, I'm waiting for my wife to get back from her knee replacement operation (parts made in China) to watch the opening. I will keep my eyes open to see Bush disappearing into the sky.
It's irony. Better known in the US as sarcasm.
Complain about this comment
Tbird 18, I'm only here because it's drizzling and I'm bored stiff.
They were/are reporting on BBC News about the bombing in Georgia without really complaining about the poor aim of the Russians. If it had been US bombers, you never would have heard the end of the 'smart bombs' remarks.
Maybe they think they are bombing Georgia in the US.
Complain about this comment
I hope you are going to look after her?
I have just put the "now show" on I don't think I will complain, however the singing isn't necessary.
I also enjoy sarcasm, even imported.
Carry-on...

DmcN:
The Americans medalling (rather more than meddling) in bombing is at it's Olympian golden best, on countries without an air force or anti-aircraft protection or wholly inadequate ones.
Then their targeting of civilians, to destroy morale, is impeccable. As Japan, North Vietnam and Iraq know only too well.
Glad your brother doesn't have to bother with eggplant treatments. Keep trying.
I hear tell those replacement operations can be an even bigger pain than even the worst of SOs.

Irony and sarcasm aren't actually the same thing you know...
Complain about this comment
Aperatif #22, I was going to point that out to David McNickle but I was afraid it would be censored because the irony of it is that to say it would be too sarcastic.

What was that quotation about the last resort of [??] men?
This is not a judgement, btw, just a request for info
Complain about this comment
Patriotism is the last resort of scoundrels (cowards, fools, ani erronii, etc.)

EI 31, You got away with saying turd!
Complain about this comment
Irony: China was told to clean up its atmosphere and then was allowed to set off a zillion fireworks, which they invented.
Sarcasm: a sharp and often satirical or ironic utterance designed to cut or give pain
I meant for my bit of irony to cut or give pain.
Complain about this comment
It was also meant to be sardonic.
Complain about this comment
Turd, David, is frequently passed (oh dear, I'm getting myself into trouble here, arent' I ;o)) in such situations because it is a good ole Anglo Saxon word. Well, perhaps it's Viking in origin, but you know what I mean.
Complain about this comment
DMcN (Various) - You're nearly right but, oh so wrong!
Sarcasm: a bitter or wounding remark; a taunt esp. one ironically worded.
Irony: Quite like an iron.
Complain about this comment
Ed uglyheart, what irony. Whenever I think about you (which is very rarely, maybe when I see your name at the top of a posting most of which I don't read) I think of dog turds. And here you are telling me of your interest in them. I must say after what little of your dribble I have read, I am not in the least surprised.

David (43) that should be a banker shouldn't it ?
Now what have I told you about dipping your toe into the shallow waters or irony? The are some intellectual heavyweights residing in here and they will take no prisoners.

Anyway, forget all that. It's been 3 days and not even a sniff of the Brazillian beach volleyball team......... Now there's a thought!
Complain about this comment
I did see a little bit of the women's archery earlier when those pesky French beat the plucky Brits into fourth place. However I have requested a Stewards enquiry as it appeared that the French team included a moose, this is of couse be against the spirit of the Olympic movement.

Tbird 44, Hey, China has a 7' 6" center who play in the NBA.
You should have been watching the British female cyclist. She got gold.

I fail to understand the appeal of watching body obsessives trim hundredths of a second off previous body obsessives' 'records' and then go over the top with joy at having won a tasteless lump of bling. They'll all be cripples in a few years' time anyway and a burden on the rest of society.
Why would anyone who cared about their health go to Beijing? To breathe the healthy air? To eat dogs?
