Hugh in China (ahem)
As promised in a previous posting...we have been sent "a whole series of slightly blurred but more than identifiable pics of Hugh blowing up and bursting a condom in the gay club in Muslim, remote, north east China at 2am"
Here they are.

Interesting to note that Chinese condoms lack the little teaty thing on the end.

Dear BBC .......

Did Hugh actually tell anyone the make of condom and any local stockists here?
That second to last picture - looks about right!
I just knew one day I would find one that would .........lol

I think he was the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police (covering London) from 1993 to 2000.

Most depressing. And my wife was so fed up - especially with the "Gay" subject that she turned off the radio.

Is this a backward radio four listener that I see before me?
Vyle, are you playing games with us?

But why Glasgow, I wonder ...

That's nae China, that'll be Bournmouth on a friday night!!!!

That reminds me of an Armed Forces bar 'game' that involves a tampon and 1/2 a pint of beer.
Those in the know (married) always won as they knew which 'munitions' had the most absorbent powers!
Silly I know, but in a testosterone fuelled world it was bloody good fun to see who could 'empty' the glass first.

The last one looks like something from a horror film being attacked by a Chinese dragon.. I really must get my eyes tested

I wonder who signs Hugh's expense account?

MrsEffingham (10) - Thank you, I'm pretty sure that you are right. But he wasn't blown up, was he?

QL (na-na-na..): I think he got a little overinflated after that 'significant contribution to road safety' business.

Ah, it all comes back now! How could I have forgotten Jean Condom, the great French second rower?
Complain about this comment
I'll see your French rower and raise you Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet, Bishop of Condom (1627 - 1704).
Actually, I had the idea that Richelieu was Bishop of Condom before becoming Louis XIV's right-hand-man (no rude associations, you lot on the naughty step), but must've got muddled.

Frances O - Ma petite vole d'eau, Jean Condom wasn't a French rower but a second row forward in the French rugby team.

Looking at picture 2 and 3, I think Hugh has the "Thin for extra sensation" one. Hence less effort needed to make it go pop. Not that I go round blowing condoms up that often.!

very clever Mittfh :-)
Where do you live? Errr Condom.
DIY - How did you know?
It beats dunking tampons in beer!

Cheval intermittent, pardon-moi, s'il te plait. J'ai jamais connu ca.*
Mais, vole? C'est pas un compliment en Francais, hmn?**
Of course, there is the French perfume, Vol de Nuit, which means night flight.
Still, as a water vole, I accept your equine correction.
The only French rugger-beggar I can remember is Castagnede [sp?]
* Horse intermittent, pardon-me. I never knew that
** The word vole has connotations of 'voleur', theif and 'voler', to steal.
Can we club together and buy you an English-French dictionary?

Frances O - Apologies - My French is very sub O-level. But I don't care if it translates or not, I like the sound of vole d'eau.

Big Sister, in America those would be labeled "Medium."

MAII 31, In America they would be labelled Trojans and called rubbers.

Now lets see them stretch condoms over their heads.

Ruof (12) or (4)
Have you ever tried complaining to the BBC (or any other broadcaster)? The reply always tells you they are right, even when you know thousands of others have made the same complaint.
Complain about this comment
Are you reverting to college days, David?
Rubbers - yes, I remember how funny I found that when I was living in the States. Along with hoods and trunks for cars, pants for - well, you know what, shoestrings, and suspenders (not sexy ones).

Vyle: So you think it is Jonnie who is playing games?

Big Sis (13) I don't understand your question. Very short of time at present, so probably missing most of the Frog postings.

Ruof (12) or (4)
Post 4 was by Jonnie ......
Complain about this comment
Sis,
Now I'm confusing you. (4) was meant to represent ruof backwards.
Complain about this comment
I had appreciated that rouf was four backwards (I think I'd already pointed that out myself yesterday), but the way it came up in your posting it looked like you meant post number 4.
Alles klar.

PS - Vyle, I'm easily confused ;o)

I was never confused...

VH 34, It is relatively useless to complain to broadcasters, except to get it off your chest. Listen to Feedback.

BS 35, Yes, it is the old rubber/eraser problem. And the French call a condom a preservatif.

Hey, the mods haven't modded the franglais above! Maybe they are getting the hang of things at last.
Complain about this comment
David, I also knew that one (for reasons I'd better not go into here!)
When I've more time, I'll share a few more linguistic laughs, but just for now I'll leave you with the one about the Italian who, on holiday in Spain, asked for 'burro' with his bread.

I suppose when he's blowing up condoms Hugh can't be on PM telling us to forget about censorship in China.
Can't the BBC find reporters who aren't apologists for left wing dictatorships?
Complain about this comment
Ralph (47) : What I took from Hugh's pieces today from China wasn't 'forget about censorship'.
It was 'there's more to China than censorship and repression'.
But maybe I was listening with a sloppy liberal open mind and mis-heard something.
;o)

Hugh has a new job lined up in a condom factory as quality controller!

Exactly, fifi (48). Thank you.
Bossing other countries around because they don't meet our High Standards is a form of neo-colonialism.
Who was it who said something about casting the first stone....?
And TheFirstRalph (47): across numerous reports from China over the past three weeks, I have mentioned repression here several times, and the 4th June 1989 massacre, and imprisonment without trial, and imposing hard labour on bereaved parents who dare to accuse the authorities in Sizhuan of flimsy school construction in a known earthquake zone.
My heart hurts when I think of those thousands of dead children.
But being confrontational about these issues is never going to result in change here.
