Eddie Mair | 12:28 UK time, Monday, 16 July 2007

Yes here it is - our editor Peter Rippon discussing, pretty much uninterrupted, tonight's programme. Recorded at 11.30, just after our 11.00 meeting.

I liked the cold water/hot water bit at the end, Eddie :)

I've got to admit that the London mayoral contest will be more interesting this time, now Boris is in. I can just imagine the fun that the HIGNFY team will have with that... BTW, when are you going to appear on that, Eddie? After all, they let Figlover on, you know....

I wouldn't have said he hogged it Eddie? He left a huge pause before you dropped in 'Cadbury'

    What's Peter Fincham done?

Top story: Boris for Mayor vs 70+ dead in northern Iraq? Surely not up for debate as to which should lead.

Please do get Ian Hislop on, however. Ian vs Eddie will be wow.

The chap who swam in very cold water was on the Today programme this morning ........ a quick rethink there, Peter?

Chocolate's fine by me .... but not as a top story.

He will hate me for it I am sure, but Peter sounds like a cabinet minister.

Eddie: I am joined by Lewis Pugh who has recently swum in the waters in the North Pole.

    Lewis Pugh: Hi.

Eddie: So, Lewis, what's swimming in very cold water like, then?

Lewis Pugh: Well, it's cold and wet in it, innit?

Eddie: Indeed. If you wish to discuss this topic can email us or comment on our blog...

Oh well nothing interesting there then.. I'll put the telly on instead!

No only joking .. I wouldn't miss PM.

There's a lot of thunderflies about in the Norfolk countryside today.. they are crawling over me! Perhaps that accounts for this, an idea for you. How about a Q and A forum where we could ask questions of the team. You could call it PMQ's.

    No? Oh well.

Where was DIYman when I needed him.

Just had a robber in the premises. Made off with £250 cash :-(

Lot's of great pics on the CCTV though, so the police reckon they can nail him - forensic have taken a few prints.

I chased him as far as I could but he out ran me in the end and I wasn't risking getting run down on the dual carriageway.

    Such is life!

As I am just starting my lunch-break (that is the sort of July that I am going through) I notice that the first paragraph of the newsletter mentions two names, one of which wants to be Conservative mayor of London. However, you completely fail to say which name to which this aspiration applies.

Could you ask the people doing the 7pm news to make mention of which it is as I doubt that I will be able to catch up with any news bulletin before then. This evening's PM sounds interesting and I hope to find time to listen-"again" before the end of the day! :-(

Thanks Appy - It's not the cash really - it's the knowledsge that someone is so brazen to walk in the back door marked PRIVATE - BEWARE OF THE DOG - and poke around in cupboards.

Rupert (the dog) was out with Mum for his walk and I was upstairs - and Simon was a stones throw away down the side way - but didn't hear him sneek in.

Simon then saw him leave through the back door and questioned him. He said he'd been in the Hotel and couldn't see anyone. Simon asked how he'd got in through a locked door?

To cut a long story short - the CCTV showed he'd tried the front door which was locked and peered through the letterbox (leaving a fingerprint) Then walked through the hall (from the private entrance) and picked up the Barnardo's charity box (which was nearly empty) and put it back down (leaving a fingerprint) Then went into the private area - found our cash store which he'd stolen, and went back into reception poking around.

After Simon spotted him leaving he asked what he was doing and gave some mumbo about booking a room - and then made a dash for it.

I was called and chased him for a quarter of a mile but gave up near a dual carriageway which he'd managed to dart across!

Anyway - no one is injured and we are just a bit shaken up - and not quite so rich - but a little wiser. I'll keep you posted if they catch the ba***rd.

Jonnie & Simon, I'm so sorry to hear about your horrible experience. Of all the brazen-faced nerve. As everyone else has said though, it is only money, & no-one was hurt, so lots to feel grateful for. BUt very unpleasant to feel that such a toe-rag has been wandering round in your home. Hope the camera has lots of useful information for the police, & that they manage to catch him. Best of luck.

Jonnie and Simon - just be glad you are both okay and nothing got damaged. Find a new place to stash your cash just in case chummy tells his mates where to look.

If they have decent fingerprints to go on the police will probably catch him as most seem to be repeat offenders (unfortunately).

I was at the Crime Scene earlier - police cars, boys in blue, etc..a sorry state. It is a sad state of affairs that Jonnie couldn't catch him up - must have been all that extra weight since he gave up smoking.

btw I am very sad about all of this - a depressing sign of the time despite all the law and order that has been imposed on us.

Watching the YouTube footage, Jonnie, I've a question to ask: Had the villain already nicked the cash before engaging in this little deceit with Simon?

Poor Simon! Of course he couldn't run in his flip flops, and especially with hair in disarray.

I hope you're managing to unwind this evening after such a horrible day. At least you know you've got a bunch of froggers - and Eddie! - all on your side.
