Wednesday's international football
The first night of international football this season and hopefully we'll get some idea of how our teams are shaping up ahead of the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers.
By the way, just before I look at the games, a quick word on the new season.
You may or may not have noticed - it has been a little lost in the deluge of GB's Olympic medals - the new football blog, but if you haven't do have a look. We have writers covering a wide range of topics from the latest chat in South America to the lower reaches of the Football League.
And from September onwards you should see some brand new ways of keeping you up to date with live scores on match days.
And don't forget that at any time you can text the word FOOTBALL to 81010 and receive a link to our mobile website so you can enjoy all the action when you're being dragged around the shops or however the other half (of either gender) finds a way to deny you the football. Technology eh, don't it move fast?
Anyhow, back to Wednesday.
England face the Czech Republic at Wembley.
JT has the armband and I imagine that Fabio is looking for a decent performance ahead of September's qualifiers with Andorra and Croatia.
But how dangerous are the Czechs, who will be looking to impress their new boss? What are you hoping for from the game this evening?
Scotland entertain Northern Ireland at Hampden Park.
Boss George Burley is excited about the pairing of Kenny Miller and James McFadden - should he be?
Northern Ireland have suffered lots of injuries so I'm not sure what to expect from them.
And let us not forget Wales. How could we do that? The land of Nicole Cooke.
They play Georgia in what I expect to be a severe test of my spelling skills. But what would be a good result for John Toshack's men?
And if you can think of anything else interesting, amusing or just generally well worth informing us about, then get involved.

Are these players really worthy of our attention considering what we have seen over the past 2 weeks. There we have seen Olympians with not much money and depending on their families to survive and still bring in success while these footballers swim in their own money and bring in poor performances. Its becasue they do not care while the Olympians do.
It has been said that the money goign into cycling sailing and rowing has reaped the rewards. Well with all the money the FA have, surely not only should England qualify but win every tournament every time.
It will be a boring draw and the players will have their excuses ready.

I'm a little bit puzzled by the balance of the England side tonight. I know Barry's left footed and all but does that mean he's going to start on the left? Where is the width in this team?!
Also, I know we all blamed McClaren for a lot of things, but I always thought he had problems in motivation and not tactical nous. It's interesting to see that Capello hasn't changed all that much, Lampard and Gerrard together, Terry captain, Beckham and Heskey back in. Maybe the players should have been looked at more.
Anyhow, should be an interesting evening. Capello's England haven't exactly set the footballing world alight yet. Will tonight be the beginning?

If Scotland win and England lose, I am assuming they will jump ahead in the rankings, therefore a dark day in our football history and a mark of where we are on the International stage right now. Not to mention the amount of "wind" coming down from the north, seriosuly not funny........

The England team has not played with passion since the 70's. The Olympians take part because they are passionate, dedicated and give their life to achieve their aim. As an ex referee I am ashamed of todays players. There are no characters like Moore, Ball Allison, Clough, Bremner, Tommy Smith, Marsh Osgood. There is no fun in the game any more.

the pitch is flooded so that has killed the game a bit,but we played well first half,kept the ball well passed it nicely also,we were opened up a few times but all in all not bad.having said that this is a poor norway side it would be nice to beat them.

Also, I wish people would stop moaning about JT being cap'n, you seriously think Rio would be the same player he is now if he would've missed the decisive penalty in the biggest game in club football + probably there own lives!! Totally right. Why are we fielding a team with James, Lampard, Beckham. This is no different to Mclaren! I thought this would be an ideal time to give experience to Bentley, wright-phillips, Agbonglahor, Richards, Lescott, etc... The FUTURE. Instead we will watch slow motion Beckham lumber about the pitch doing the occasional OK cross. Lampard and Gerrard getting in each others way. All topped off by Emile Heskey coming on to fall over a few times. I despair. I really, really do!

Blogs are rubbish. 606 rules. Anyway leaving Joe Cole out is a joke frankly. He's been one of the most consistent performers for England over the past few years and was one of very few to come out of the World Cup with their reputation intact. Capello is not picking the best team, he's just picking what he thinks are the best players. Yet again Gerrard is paired with Lampard when we know it doesn't work and Barry is picked and then immediately shoved onto the wing. Why? Also why put Beckham in still? He hasn't exactly set the MLS on fire. I'm sick of him being dropped then put back in. Stick with the future, which is Bentley. He's not going to last till 2010 is he? And Defoe has shown very little in Pre-season and in the first few games of the season.

The passion of the 70's was that we were passionate loosers I agree the last truely inspirational teams were those of Alf Ramsey. Not an outgoing manager but he knew how to motivate. The English Domestic game was at its height from 1964 to 1974 from there on it was money and kick and rush that ruined the game.

Give the man a chance, look what happened the last time everybody rushed for the first available Englishman to coach the team.

I think the main problem with friendlies is that the players don't take it seriously enough. How any manager is supposed to get a good idea of formations and tactics when their players see this as a run-around is beyond me. I'm not saying they don't take pride in playing for their country but a little more effort would make it more rewarding for fans and footballers alike.

Why the constant, redundant debate about Englands midfield???
Since 2004 how many goals have been scored by English strikers? I know Rooney had 0 in qualification for Germany 2006... the total is probably less the 10 the last few years.
After Micheal Owen's fall from consistancy thanks to fitness, England havent had anything close to a world class striker. What are Lampard, Gerrard, Barry.. for that matter anyone going to accomplish with nothing up front?
As great as Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas were it was the ability of Villa, Torres, and Guiza that gave them something to work with.
No coincidence at all in my mind that England's struggles started to manifest itself when Rooney became the first choice striker.

England are so rubbish that the only way they can score these days is from set pieces. That's all that Beckham is good for atm. Lampard and Gerrard are once again failing absymally. This is pathetic. Czech Republic are a shadow of the side they were at Euro 2004 and even World Cup 2006. No inspiration from the midfield and the strikers can't be relied on to score. Even the defence is leaky with the 'inspirational' captain Terry being turned so easily he may as well not have been there.

I fully agree with you, Rooney is not a first choice striker because he is not your first striker, he is the second striker one that plays deeper.
Effectively rooney is being played out of position by being up top as a #1 striker if that makes sence.
Rooney worked brilliantly with Owen because both had thier defined positions and prefered positions, until england find another striker to do the owen role effectively rooney will continue to be ineffective.

Capello has absolutely no vision at all, instead he has merely moved gerrard to the left to try and accomodate Lampard. Its simply pathetic.
We need decent attacking wingers like Joe cole and Ashley Young in the team and just drop Lampard who has done absolutely nothing all game. Despite the goal it's still a poor performance by England. They're playing with three central midfielders. They need a left winger. For the life of me I can't understand why Ashley Young is not in the side. He'd be perfect for the left wing. Then England could take out Lampard. And where is agbonlahor? Theo Walcott and Emile Heskey over Agbonlahor? Very disappointing.

If the first international game is so important then why is it on Setanta and not the BBC. Money and more Money and further killing the game unlike the Olympics as has been mentioned already. The England national team encapsulate everything that is intolerable about football at the top level in this country. Okay so in the last 12 months we've beaten Russia (once, although they've beaten us as well), Israel, Estonia, Austria, Switzerland, the USA and Trinidad and Tobago. In that time we've lost to France, Germany, Croatia and Russia. So if we are aiming to remain in the top 20 of the world then i guess there is no crisis, however if we want to be in the top four in the world, i'm afraid we are a long way off.

Beckham yet again delivers and is the only professional player on the England side at the moment. How can people say his only attribute is his set pieces.
Playing on the wing isn't all about pace, some people need to wake up and smell the roses and accept we aren't as good as we think we are, and that putting children in our side won't change that. Bentley has played the last couple of games for England and has looked useless, yet Beckham has had a good game every time I have seen him recently, and is the only one providing us with goals, and lets face it, Capello obviously knows what he is doing more than we do, or else he wouldn't be getting paid in huge sums every week.
Remember Croatia? As soon as Beckham came on after a dismal first half display, we turned up the heat and scored a couple of goals straight away to get us ahead, and if it hadn't been for some awful keeping and defending we would have qualified, Beckham's cross for Crouch's header was out of Bentley and Young's leagues.

Watching England is just so painful. It seems like nothing has changed; we still play the same boring, long-ball football that we have been doing for the last 20 years. Under Sven, McClaren and Capello the only time I can remeber being 'wowwed' by an England performance was the 5-1 against Germany in 2001. In England, we saw that as being as good as winning the World Cup and we stood still whereas Germany saw it as a kick up the backside and acted upon it and then reached 2 World Cup finals and a Euro Final. Where are we?! Nowhere.
That team has Champions League winners, Premier League winners, world superstars and yet they look like schoolboys in an England shirt. They can't even string a few passes together! Absolutely dire is the only way you can describe English national football at the moment. Anyone who has gone to Wembley tonight to watch England is a mug. It's just so boring; thats what annoys me most! Its not as if we're playing pretty football but lacking in a bit of cutting edge. We look like complete amateurs! Well, Barwick has quit at a good time eh. Nice and quiet, under the radar....
He should've gone after the whole Sven debacle. Once McClaren was signed his head should've been put on a spike on London Bridge to serve as a warning to others.
Instead, he'll leave with a golden handshake at a time when qualification is nowhere near settled. If we qualify he'll take plaudits for signing the Italian, and if we don't he'll keep his head down.
Get rid of all the FA and start again!!!
PS Is there any team in Europe that can't beat us at home now? Macedonia must be feeling embarrassed they only got the draw...

BTW I think England fans should remember Tthat the Czech republic have been above them in the world rankings for quite some time and have, in my opinion, been one of the best 5 teams in europe for a while now. It's a good test for England.

England are at a new low-Emile Heskey is the only England striker on the pitch now...England are an embarrassment..they have players living on reputation. Janes is back to his usual tricks, Wes Brown isnt even first choice for Man United now, John Terry got turned for the first goal, Rio has been spraying misplaced passes everwhere, Barry and Lampard have been anonimous, Beckham is a publicity stunt, Rooney has playe way too deep. Gerrard is the only player that could be described as world class-and he's been taken off injured!!

World Cup 2010 is the first to be held in Africa... its 2 years away. Its quite hot in Africa, which makes running hard, and possession key.
So lets pick Beckham, he's a promising a youngster with a big future. Not the kind of huy who has lost his pace and hoofs long passes aimlessly. He's the kind of guy who's never going to let England down at a key moment.
Spain? Can keep their Fagregas, Casillas and Torres. We have Lampard, James and Defoe instead, who prove everytime they play for England how great they are. We don't need to actually qualify for anything to prove we're the best, because Capello is being paid £8m p.a. to tell us we are. Yay!

England have never really been up there with Brazil, Germany, Italy have they? I think it's the ridiculous sense of expectation after 1966 (before most of us were born) that is the problem. I think you should get behind your team a bit more really.
