Nerdy by nature

Hi all!

This week the podcast presents our nerdcore special. Nerdcore is the hip hop genre where the nerds and geeks let their freak flags fly with pride. Covering topics from comic books, gaming, role play, anime, social awkwardness and being shy, nerdcore has a close community of performers, supporters and home grown music makers creating albums in their homes for distribution on the internet.

One of the Nerdcore establishment's founding fathers is MC Frontalot. he raps about the pleasure and pain of being a nerd and he took time out to explain to us more about the genre that covers both paranoia and hacking your calculator.

Upcoming artist Adam WarRock has a album coming out in October, he raps about comic books and general geek culture. Although he has never seen an episode of Dr Who, he took the leap from a day job as an attorney to pursue a career in the rap arena for geeks.

Nerdcore is a somewhat male dominated genre, but look carefully and you will also uncover the female gems. Nursehella in Canada is branching out from nerdcore as a female MC, but she admits with her star wars tattoos and love of comic books and action figures that it is likely nerdcore will remain close to her heart.

Scrub Club records is a great base if you want to explore more about this field of music. Madhatter McGinnis is the head of the not for profit record label and he told us more about how the internet has helped to create support and connect people from all over the world so that they can perform together.

Much as I wish I could rhyme like our guests this week, I am probably better off being an avid listener. But if you are inspired to get your geek on, then let us know about it.
Email me at outriders at bbc dot co dot uk, catch up on twitter @BBC_Outriders or search within facebook for outriders and let us know what's on your mind each week in the world of the web.

Until next week!

From down the road, in my abode I’ll cut some code.
We use dot net, so don’t you fret cos this app’s gonna make you sweat.
We love VB and soon you’ll see a coding spree
It’s not C sharp, we don’t like carp, so don’t you harp.
Our codes complete, its proper sweet, a right royal treat.
You can use our site, cos it’s alright.

I actually find the associated news story irritating and ill-informed...partly because of the unnecessary and pretentious 'niche' itself... but also because most of the best MCs were/are basically geeks, they're just not nerds; obsessive wordplay, listening to a beat over and over to write lyrics around it, continuously upping the ante for the complexity of rhyme patterns, pop-culture references and the private, self-contained world of hip hop itself...are these things not 'geeky'?
