California dreaming

Martin Rosenbaum | 18:33 UK time, Tuesday, 29 April 2008

Now, here's an idea (from California) that would save time and effort for hard-pressed FOI officers:

"Every time a city employee produces a document, the computer system should automatically send a back-up copy to a public web server. That way nothing would get lost or erased, and anyone looking for public information could simply go to that site and search for it him or herself."

Erm, but what about all the documents that are produced containing highly commercially sensitive information, or legal advice, or personal remuneration details and home addresses of all employees, etc. etc.?

It's certainly an idea. Not sure how good it is though.

Indeed. Fair points. But perhaps I've been a little unfair to the article in question by just quoting the one extract, because it does suggest ways of coping with such issues.

Good point - I didn't read the full article earlier, as I was pressed for time.

It does seem, therefore, to be an interesting idea. But I can see a lot of employees always 'ticking the box' that stops the document being posted to the web.
