Olympic countdown - 100 - years since...

There are just 100 days to go to the start of the Beijing Olympics and BBC Sport is counting down to the big day with a series of facts relating to each day.
It is 100 years since London first hosted the Olympic Games.
The city had just 18 months to prepare after Rome pulled out following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Italy in 1906.
There were several contentious events such as Dorando Pietri's disqualification from the marathon and Wyndham Halswelle's unopposed victory in the 400m.
Britain won 145 medals, made up of 56 golds, 51 silvers and 38 bronzes, to top the table - subsequent GB teams have never come close to winning as many.
The Olympic Creed which states, "the most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part," was first uttered in 1908.

If something similar happened today as happened in Rome in 1906 how would it be dealt with? Nowadays Olympic venues take years to build and all the commercial side must be worth billions and surely cant be switched very easily.
Still it probably wouldn't cause as much fuss as choosing Beijing to host the games...
