Last Wednesday would have marked the 78th birthday of Dr Robert ‘Bob’ Moog – the man who revolutionized music with the invention of the Moog synthesizer.

This instrument was seized up the likes of The Beatles, The Doors, Stevie Wonder in the late 60s, but it was the introduction of the Mini Moog in 1970 which ushered in a new age for synthesized music. Thanks to its portability and price, it was seized upon by aspiring electronic musicians, paving the way for prog rockers like Yes, Tangerine Dream and synth pioneers Kraftwerk .

This week Google dedicated their homepage to the Moog, and with such an outpouring of analog synth love online this week, what better perfect subject to base a playlist on for this Sunday’s Now Playing on?

On Friday evening came the terrible news that Adam Yauch had passed away aged just 47.

The Brooklyn rapper performed as MCA with the Beastie Boys who became one of the most important and influential acts of the ‘90s.

Tonight’s show was meant to celebrate the great Bobby Womack, but we felt given the magnitude of this news and the widespread feelings of sadness from all corners of the musical world we should celebrate the huge impact MCA has had.

One of the most distinctive voices in music belongs to a man who could make the world stop, and this week the title track to his new album, The Bravest Man in the Universe, cased quite a stir online.

From Pitchfork to Earmilk, Bobby Womack has been the single artist who people can’t stop talking about – so we thought why not dedicate an hour of this week’s Now Playing to the soul legend.

With more albums than I have years under my belt, Womack is a true music icon and there’s a plethora of music for us to choose from.

Thirty years ago in Manchester a club opened which changed the way people enjoyed, listened and made music.

The Haçienda opened on Whitworth Street West in the city centre in May 1982 and despite famously being hideously mis-managed and disorganized, it remained open until 1997. Largely made financially viable by funds from Joy Division and New Order record sales, it gave rise to acid house and rave music which became such an important social movement in Britain.

So as 6 Music ends its celebration of dance music, we at Now Playing thought it only right to honour this wonderful home of electronic music by asking you to share your memories of the club, the artists who played there and the music which spawned from it.

To kick off 6 Music Celebrates Dance Culture in April, our new Sunday time slot on BBC 6 Music, and the fact Dig Your Own Hole was 15 yesterday – we thought there’s no better way but to do a show built around the marvelous electronic big beats of The Chemical Brothers.

A lot of the show was built around Block Rockin’ Beats, but we also ventured into hip hop and some of the UKs most beloved pop bands of the past.

What The Chemical Brothers haven’t done in electronic music frankly isn’t worth doing. They’ve had dancefloors across the world jumping in time to Block Rockin’ Beats, they’ve headlined festivals from Glastonbury to Japan, they’ve had number one albums and recently had people dancing in the aisles of cinemas with their film Don’t Think.

So as 6 Music kick of their celebrations of dance culture through April – what better way for Now Playing to celebrate than with a show dedicated to one of Britain’s best products – The Chemical Brothers, 15 years and a day after they released their incredible album Dig Your Own Hole. This record featured Noel Gallgher on track Setting Sun, and also brought Don’t Stop the Rock and The Private Psychedelic Reel into our lives.

Childhood classmates Ed Simons and Tom Rowlands started their production lives as The Dust Brothers after the production duo made famous for their work with The Beastie Boys, before a legal threat and the release of Leave Home gave rise to The Chemical Brothers we know and love.

They’ve gone on to produce some of the most seminal dance records of all time and have developed one of the most pioneering live shows around.

When Blur step up to receive the Outstanding Contribution to Music trophy at this week’s BRIT Awards, it’ll be the culmination of a journey which began nearly 25 years ago at Goldsmiths College, London. Since then they’ve traversed numerous scenes and styles, from baggy to Britpop, via an infatuation with college rock and experimenting with world music, but never losing sight that what matters most is a good tune.

When they returned to headline Glastonbury in 2009 after a hiatus which involved everything from cheese to politics, their music felt more vital than ever. Perhaps we’d begun to take them for granted by the tail end of the 90s and needed to be reminded just how good their songs were again?

Whatever, anyone who was on Worthy Farm that evening or at Blur's shows in London’s Hyde Park which followed will know what a special place the British public hold in their hearts for Damon, Alex, Graham and Dave.

To commemorate their BRIT, this Friday night on Now Playing we want you to build the ultimate Blur inspired playlist - but we need your help and music suggestions, like:

They’ve broken boundaries between rock and electronic music, produced the best selling 12” of all time and have just been announced as Bestival’s Saturday night headliner. So, what finer time (arf!) to celebrate all things New Order than on 6 Music this Friday night?

Formed from the ashes of Joy Division in 1980, New Order became Factory Records’ flagship band, melding Hooky’s signature bass sound with Barney’s knack for a melancholy vocal line. A visit to New York in 1981 introduced them to the synthesizers and beats which informed Power Corruption & Lies (25 years old this year) but it was a jaunt to Ibiza in the mid ‘80s which really changed the game.

Returning to the UK enthused by balearic beats and club culture, they created Technique, paving the way for the indie dance crossover sound beloved of everyone from Primal Scream to Friendly Fires.

Inextricably linked to the Hacienda - in fact their royalties propped up the ailing nightclub for much of its history - New Order have continued to inspire long after the Hac closed its doors. They may have had more bust ups and comebacks than Hooky’s had broken bass guitars straps, but for anyone who sees them live this summer they’ll be guaranteed top tunes galore.

Have you ever thought what would happen if two electronic super powers joined in a single studio. Say for example someone who largely produced the eighties as a decade, and another duo who dominated the noughties.

Well guess what – it’s happening. Nile Rodgers of Chic and Daft Punk have been in the studio and he’s Tweeted that an album is coming.
