The legendary and hugely influential Lou Reed is coming to BBC 6 Music this autumn, with a series of 12 eclectic programmes called Lou Reed’s New York Shuffle – and to celebrate the latest arrival to the 6 Music DJ roster we thought why not have a whole Now Playing dedicated to his music.

His shows kick off on October 14, and as well as our show, they’ll be loads of other Lou Reed and Velvet Underground related content such as The First Time with John Cale, an interview with Lou on 6 Music News and a very special 6 Music video interpretation of Perfect Day.

What could you add to the Ultimate Velvet Underground Playlist?
* Classic Velvet songs, album tracks and B-sides
* People they’ve inspired from David Bowie to Siouxsie and the Banshees, Pixies, Roxy Music and Pavement
* Other iconic New York artists who could include The Dolls, Patti Smith, CBGBs, The Strokes or Blondie
* Solo work by Lou Reed or John Cale and perhaps their various collaborations with Gorillaz, Antony and the Johnsons, Brian Eno and so on

It’s really all down to you.

So let us know what you want Jon Hillcock – who will be in the chair as Tom is away – what you fancy by leaving a comment on this blog or our Facebook page, Tweet us using #Velvet6Music, send us an e-mail or drag a track onto our collaborative Spotify Playlist.

And if you want to know what to expect when Lou Reed hit's the airwaves this weekend - here's a clip of him talking about James Blake.

  • Comment number 1.

My ultimate 80 min CD of Velvets I've made and listen to in the car is:
    Sunday Morning [mono]
I'm Waiting For The Man [mono]
    Femme Fatale [single version]
    Venus In Furs [mono]
    All Tomorrow's Parties [single version]
    Heroin [mono]
    There She Goes Again [mono]
I'll Be Your Mirror [single version]
    White Light White Heat
    Here She Comes Now
    What Goes On [closet mix]
    Some Kinda Love [closet mix]
    Pale Blue Eyes [closet mix]
Beginning To See The Light [closet mix]
    I'm Set Free [closet mix]
That's The Story Of My Life [closet mix]
    Who Loves The Sun
    Sweet Jane [full length version]
    Rock And Roll
    Oh! Sweet Nuthin'

Now you could argue that Sister Ray needs to be on any VU compilation but it'd mean getting rid of 4 or 5 other songs and isn't very car-friendly anyway....
