"Dregs of society" ran Catholic schools
'A Catholic theologian has said the dregs of society ran institutions where children were abused by what he called monsters. However, Fr Vincent Twomey also praised many other members of religious orders for caring for vulnerable people who had been abandoned for centuries by British administrations in the Republic', writes Joe Little of RTE, summarizing comments made on today's Sunday Sequence programme (listen here) by Dr Twomey, whose PhD dissertation was supervised by the future Pope Benedict.

Sorry, but that won't cut it either. The church did everything it could to obstruct every attempt to get at the truth behind these allegations. It was in the 1990s that the horror began to be uncovered but it took the Ryan Report in 2009 before the church put up its hands and said fair cop guv.Even then they had already done some "plea bargaining" to ensure they escaped part of their responsibility to compensate the victims.

I don't understand why there can't be criminal prosecutions. In the US, there might be a statute of limitations also but because the coverup was part of an ongoing conspiracy, that statute wouldn't apply. I'm surprised the vicitms and their families have been so passive. I'm surprised at the lack of violence too.

If you look under the surface there is an abundance of violence - self harming, attempted suicides, actual suicides. The violence is there alright, its just directed inwardly that's all.
