Day at the races

John McCririck with Lizzie

I'm at the Grand National at Aintree in Liverpool today - it's one of my favoruite sporting events of the year. It's just such an amazing race and there's always loads going on and plenty of excitement.

The best thing for me is that I get to meet loads of my heroes. This morning I've seen several top jockeys, interviewed BBC commentator Jim McGrath and here I am posing with Big Mac, John McCririck.

You can check out the pony racing on Sportsround at 11.45am today before the big race starts at 4.15pm.

Come on you Reds!

Lizzie at Anfield

It feels like hardly any time at all since I was in Anfield for Liverpool's last round match against Barcelona but here I am again. And I'm getting to know it quite well!

In fact, I bumped into a load of Liverpool fans on the way up on the train - and they recognised me from that match. They reckoned the Reds are going to sail through and play Bayer Munich in the final.

I also saw lots of PSV Eindhoven supporters who were up for a good day out. They still think they're going to win but I think they're deluding themselves!

In Liverpool I've spotted loads of kids wondering around the city on the team strip. And already fans are hanging around the stadium counting down to kick-off.

I've just visited a soccer camp where loads of children think Liverpool will win 5-0 today, that's 8-3 on aggregate. They all think it's going to be a high scoring game like Manchester United's was last night.

Unfortunately, I can't stick around to watch the match at Anfield because I have to get back to the office to do stuff for Sportsround but I'll definitely be watching it on telly.

This is such an exciting week of football - last night's match had me on the edge of my seat and if Liverpool go through and Tottenham win tomorrow's Uefa Cup match this will truly be a great week for England footie fans!

School surfing...

Lizzie

Now you've probably heard of mountain boarding and kite surfing - what what about street surfing?
Well it's a cool new sport which I got to try out for Newsround at a school in Dorset yesterday. It's basically like skateboarding but the board, called a 'waveboard', is much easier to ride and you can go up hills without putting your feet down. They're also quite a good fitness work out so schools in Dorset are letting their pupils have a go at riding waveboards as part of their PE lessons.

Lizzie

Here's a photo of me riding one - looking pretty sick eh? Or maybe not, I think I'll stick to snowboarding, but it was really good fun. If you want to find out more about street surfing and see me in action on the board, then check out this afternoon's Newsround at 5.25pm on BBC1.

Adam and Lizzie's indoor cycling adventure.

Lizzie and Adam

Regular Sportsround viewers will be well aware of the sporting antics Adam, Jake and I get up to for the programme. In the past we've done crazy things like abseiling down cliffs, capsizing canoes, getting tackled by international rugby stars - not to mention playing hockey with the England junior team (that was me and I like to think I gave them a run for their money...) but last night Adam and I did what we consider to be the scariest to date.... indoor track cycling.

Now I know it doesn't sound scary and frankly I'm a bit embarassed to admit just how worried I was, I mean it's just cycling indoors isn't it? But imagine cycling a skinny racing bike with no brakes, with your feet stuck to the pedals on a track so steep you can't even walk up it... Welcome to the world of indoor track cycling.

Lizzie and Adam

Here we are in our tight kit (kindly donated by the World Track Cycling team) the shorts were padded, which was just as well because my bum still hurts and the shoes were rock hard. Adam and I had to be helped onto our bikes and it took at least 2 laps of wobbling around on the flat before we were both brave enough to go up onto the track itself.

However once we'd got over our general fear we had quite a bit of fun and even had a race.
Find out more about track cycling as well as the all important result of my race against Adam on this Saturday's Sportsround, BBC 2 at 1145.

Tell us your fave pancake topping

pancakes

It's pancake day! Or Shrove Tuesday as it's officially called in the Christian religious calender.

I just love pancake day. Here's Adam, Sonali and I with our pancakes for lunch (I'll probably have them for dinner as well!) Adam had banana and ice cream on his.

Sonali chose coconut chocolate for her pancake but I only ever have the traditional topping of lemon and sugar on mine. Mmmmm.

What's your fave pancake topping? Also are you doing anything to celebrate pancake day? There are pancake races in my village this afternoon where the local kids will be racing up and down the lane with pancakes in a pan.

Let us know what you're up to.

And you can send us photos of your pancakes by going back to the Newsround website!

FA Cup trip to Macclesfield and Ken Barlow...

Lizzie and the FA Cup

Well it seems I underestimated Macclesfield. At first I wasn't too excited about the idea of travelling there and back today to interview a player at the football club Macclesfield Town.

But not only was the club really friendly and the player really nice, but I also saw the Corrie star Ken Barlow at the train station on the way back! He just walked into the waiting room. I kept taking sneaky peeks at him across the room, it was so cool! I nearly took a photo with my phone to show you, but I thought that might be a bit rude.

Macclesfield are playing Chelsea in the 3rd round of the FA Cup on Saturday so I went there to speak to their goal keeper to find out how he's feeling about the massive match. I'm back in the office now, frantically trying to get everything done before the end of the day.

I'm purposely avoiding celebrity BB. I'm not a fan of the show full stop. Life's too short to waste time watching people doing nothing on TV. I'd rather be out doing my own stuff instead.

The glamourous world of the FA Cup

Lizzie and her tickets

Well so much for me planning some glamourous reporting trips... tomorrow I'm off to Macclesfield and on Saturday they're sending me to Nottingham (no offence Macclesfield and Nottingham but you're hardly Jamaica!) Oh well, such is the life of a dedicated Sportsround and Newsround reporter.

My trips are for the 3rd round of the FA Cup. This is when it gets exciting. The Premiership teams are allowed into the competition in the 3rd round and there's always some sort of upset when a bottom division team scares the living daylights out of one of the top clubs. Check out Sportsround this Saturday morning to see a few of my favourite FA Cup 3rd round giant killings.

Finally have any of you started trying my nail sponsorship idea? I think it's the best way to stop biting your nails. Basically you ask all your friends and family to sponsor a nail each and when you grow it, they pay you - perfect! Let me know if any of you have any success.

Looking forward to a great sporting year.

Happy new year! Did you have a good time over christmas? Of course most of you lucky people will still be chilling-out at home, finishing off your holiday chocolate and thinking of how you can get out of writing your thank you letters. But some of us are back at work! It's actually a bit of a shock for me to be back after two weeks off. I do feel very relaxed though and I'm definitely ready for a whole new year of fun and excitement at Newsround and Sportsround. Over the break I've been able to combat the turkey bulge with plenty of sport including a few rounds of golf and lots of cross-running with my dog Zebedee. Unfortunately it's been very muddy for cross-country running and yesterday I managed to fall over by a stile and my dog fell in a ditch!
Now I'm back to reality and as well as my usual daily duties on NR and SR I'm busy planning which great stories to cover over the next 12 months. There's so much going on including the Cricket World Cup in Jamaica - now that would be a good story to cover... (nudge, nudge, wink, wink to my boss!) But whether you're watching it on the telly or if you're lucky enough to go to a real event, this year is a great one for sports fans. The only downer is that it's extremely unlikely England will win the Cricket World Cup and even less likely they'll win the Rugby one. So I'll be supporting Wales instead!
