Fun in the snow

  • Lizo
  • 9 Feb 07, 06:24 PM

Wow, what a week it's been for weather. It was very snowy here in London yesterday, but I happened to have booked the day off, so I had a fun day enjoying myself at home.

The programme ususally loves sending me to places where the weather is really bad, whether here or in the UK.

I've been sent to cover huge floods in Mozambique, and hurricanes in America. But yesterday, got to enjoy the snowy weather instead of report on it.

Unlike you, we usually have to work everyday whatever the weather. And yesterday and today lots of you got the day off school because of the weather, and were out sledging and building snowmen.

I used to love days like that when I was at school, unexpectedly getting a day off. I suspect the teachers were pretty pleased as well.

So what I want to know today is - if you had the day off because of the weather yesterday or today, what did you spend the day doing?

Famous People

I discovered a really weird fact the other day. And that's that I was actually at school with Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond.

I only found out by accident, but after straining my memory for a few hours I could just about remember him.

It really surprised me as, of course, we've done a lot about him on Newsround since his terrible crash. And it was a bit of a shock to find out that I knew him years ago.

So I decided to ask around the Newsround office to find out if anyone else had had similar experiences.

It turns out that our Deputy Editor (one of our big bosses) was at the same school as pop star Katie Melua!

And one of the journalists I work with on the programme, Catherine, was a friend of TV presenter Cat Deeley at school.

So what I want to know is have you ever met any famous people. And if you have, what were they like?

Other people's blogs

I know that I've not been the only one blogging today! Lots of you have been writing your own weblogs as part of a worldwide blogathon.

I do love reading other people's blogs to find out what they've been up to. I'm so busy that with a lot of my friends, it's the only way I can find out how they are.

And they've been up to a huge range of things!

One is abseiling down a huge tower in London to raise money for charity. So I'm going to sponsor them to do that!

Another is having a great time skiing in France.

While I can't tell you how many keep losing their mobile phones, and have to send write on their blogs 'please send me your number again.'

Luckily I've never lost my phone, but I have dropped one in the bath by accident and had to spend two days drying it out before it would work again.

Anyway, let me know if any of your friends write blogs and what kind of things they say on them.

Harry or Lyra

Dakota Blue Richards and Nicole Kidman filming Northern Lights

It's been an exciting few weeks! Books are one of my favourite things, and so it was great to go onto the set of the film version of Northern Lights recently and meet Dakota Blue Richards who plays Lyra. She seems spot on for the part, and said how much she's enjoyed making the film.

And, of course, last week J K Rowling announced when the final Harry Potter book would hit the shelves. So I'm already counting down the days until the 21st July. And am still trying to work out what I think will happen at the end of the story.

So all in all it's looking like being a good year for children's books.

I'd love to know what you're looking forward to the most, though. Is it the release of the film version of Northern Lights? Or is it the last Potter book. And don't forget to tell me why as well.

Happy Christmas

Well, it's nearly Christmas and almost all the Newsround team are off for a few days, after a really busy year. There might not be any TV updates over the holiday, but the Newsround website will still have lots of news for you over the next week or so. Even on Christmas Day.

I'm off to see my family for a few days, which will be great. Although I've still got to do a last bit of Xmas shopping. I can't work out what to get for my Mum, but I'm sure I'll think of something.

And I'm already looking forward to next year, there are so many big stories happening in 2007, that I can't wait to start working on.

But I hope you all have a fantastic Christmas. From me, and all the Newsround Team!

Lizo

Hi,

Welcome to the Newsround and Sportsround presenter blog. Ellie, Laura, Lizzie, Adam, Thalia, Sonali and I will be posting on here regularly. Hurrah! A blog is a kind of online diary, but it'll often contain links to other sites. And it's not just about what we think. You have the chance to add your comments for everyone to see too.

As part of the blog we'll be putting up photos, along with some of the funny and serious stuff that goes on behind the scenes here.

Today's been a particularly busy day, as Ellie is over in Israel reporting on the latest in the Middle East. While I've been getting ready to present the BBC One programme.

I've been working on a few stories for today. But also planning for the future. Making phone calls about our plans for the next series of Dr. Who (yes, I know it's not on TV until next Spring but we have to sort things out as early as possible).

And, of course, sorting a few things out Harry Potterwise. Some of you will have seen the exclusive interview we did last month interview with the girl who's playing Luna Lovegood - Evanna Lynch. The good news is that although she was quite nervous, she did like the interview we did.

I'll have more for you later in the week.

Bye for now,

Lizo.
