Charles Wheeler - in his own words

Peter Barron | 14:21 UK time, Friday, 11 July 2008

wheelernixon.jpgSo much has already been said and written about the great Charles Wheeler, who died last week, that I don't intend to add to it here.

I'd feel a bit of a fraud as I only worked with him very briefly on Newsnight as a junior producer in the '90s - a mildly terrifying experience it was.

Instead, by way of tribute, we've asked Newsnight's film librarian Adam Gotch, who lived and breathed the Wheeler years, to pull out of the archive every single piece by Charles he can find.

So here - simply because we can - we present the complete Charles Wheeler, in his own words. Click here.

Sadly, this seminal work by Charles Wheeler was lost when he ate it out of sheer frustration at the direction BBC News reporting was taking. We are the poorer.

No, no. NOW he woes them, then he wooed them.

Thanks so much for putting up such a wonderful tribute to Charles Wheeler, all his reports including the Radio 4 interview by Jeremy on Charles' 80th birthday. As Jeremy pointed out Charles was "the gold standard" of journalism.
