I think the Oscars were pretty much spot on, although I haven't seen Life of Pi yet - I disliked the book so much it's taking a while to psych up the courage to see the film, and I'd like to have seen Speilberg get a nod. I did find myself cringing at Seth MacFarlane's jokes. I love his humour, but the Oscars wasn't the forum for it, and I think the lack of crowd reaction shots told its own story.

I'm going to disagree with you on Berberian Sound Studio, Mark. I saw this a couple of days ago. I was really excited (mainly becasue of your recommendation), but was terribly disappointed. Yes, Toby Jones is brilliant, and it is initially interesting, but the film has no third act and seems to just run out of ideas and stop without explaining anything or giving any closure. I can imagine critics like yourself must get jaded seeing the same formulaic rubbish over and over, and so cling to anything as original as this when it comes along, but it needs an ending! Even the most oblique David Lynch films (which this reminded me of at times) have endings. As it is, this is a missed opportunity. With another pass or two on the script this could have been something really special.

I think for originality and an ending that put two fingers up to how every other film of its ilk ends, I would have given The Best Film Kermode to The Cabin in the Woods.

What about Paul Thomas Anderson for Best Director?

I'm probably going to prove pretty unpopular for this, but perhaps Jude Law in AnnaKarenninanainannaina?

If there is any justice then Holy Motors will win the Kermode award for best film in another language. Personally it is the best and most surprising film I've seen all year and haunted me for months after viewing. Denis Levant is possibly the best character actor ever, making tramps and accordian playing equally mesmerising and hilarious. An award is due surely for making a scene with an a capella Kylie poignant and affecting rather than the car crash it could have been.

Oscar nominations were as predictable as ever. As they always have been since I can remember. It's a very political and biased selection process that sees the typical categories of films get nominated - the current issue of the year movie, the historical true story, the quirky indie hit, the inspirational movie and the latest Spielberg and/or Scorcese release.

So no real surprises beyond seeing the exclusion of 'The Impossible' and 'Flight' for Best Picture nominations - not necessarily because they were great films but because they seem tailor made for Oscar baiting.

For the Kermodes, I can only imagine that Mark's love affair with 'A Royal Affair' will see it triumph for Best Picture.

For me, the best film I saw in 2012 was actually 'The Grey.' While many people viewed it as a simple survival adventure story I found it much more profound than that. To me, it was an existential allegory about many things, namely the nature of men and the alpha male. It explored, in a very uncompromising way, how there was no such thing as "god" in the wild and how hopelessness and death can either be faced, feared or fled from.

I have never seen a supposed action movie that explored such philosophical questions in such a bleak context. While the visceral nature of the story was raw and fierce, it's humanity and soul searching were deeply surprising, and to me, incredibly profound by the final scene. And Neeson gave his best and most soulful performance in over a decade I feel.

Alas, no nominations for 'The Grey' at the Oscars or at the Kermodes.

Mark, please at least give 'The Grey' a special award for "Best use of poetry in a man vs wolf survival drama".
