There is an idea that the best film reviews are the ones that stick the knife in pithiliy, wittily and without mercy. What are your favourite deadly one liners and why?

Richard Roeper's review of Movie 43 was absolutely wonderful. I love the analogy with the pill and "the Citizen Kane of awful" is a beautiful summation.

http://spoonyexperiment.com/category/final-fantasy-viii/ - Not a film review but this is Noah 'Spoony' Antweiler's one man mission to completely destroy a game he feels absolutely nothing but gloriously hilarious contempt for, it's a huge slog of a review that goes into every single detail that you could possibly go into in describing exactly EVERYTHING he hates about this game. Nit-picking to almost murderously obsessive scrubbing-clean degree? Absolutely, but seldom has any reviewer managed to perfectly convey to you exactly what he went through and you go through too by proxy!

And though I'm never one to blow my own trumpet, but I already have a VERY long list of nasty things to say about the remake to my favourite film of all time in 'The Evil Dead, and this is just from the trailer. At least it's only calling itself 'Evil Dead' as it does not even dare to go claiming to be 'THE Evil Dead' Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

"In reality, 50 Cent wasn't nailed to the cross for our sins, he was shot nine times for his. And he's been getting extremely rich from glorifying those acts ever since" - "Get Rich or Die Tryin", Mike Bell (Jam! Movies)

I am from Richmond, Virginia, US and we used to have this reviewer for the Richmond Times Dispatch named Daniel Neman. He was very funny and particularly caustic when he did not like a movie. He used to do a section in the paper when he would write a few quick sentences about each movie. In one of these, was one of the funniest reviews of The Number 23 with Jim Carrey (AWFUL). It read something like this...

"I used 23 words to write this movie review, and that is a lot more exciting than this terrible movie was to watch."

That is not the exact quote, but the message is the same. He has been laid off since then, and finding the exact quote would be impossible.

I can't remember the source, possibly Barry Norman, and I suspect many other critics for The Flintstones: 'Yabba-Dabba-Don't!'

Dr Kermode is far and away my favourite critic, and although his reviews may not be pithy, one can extract pithy comments from the prolonged rants which tell you all you need to know. As a case in point, consider the (marvellous) rant on "Sex and the City 2", take two words from the beginning and the final two sentences, and you have a swift and succinct summary:

    "It's ghastly.

"It is consumerist pornography! It is an orgy of dripping wealth that made me want to be sick."

I read this in Olivia Newton John's recent biography but I cannot remember who said it. Some help from the bloggers would be nice. "Xanadu? Xanadon't!" Classic.

The Good Doctors review of John Carter "OF MARS!" Keith Lemon and Sex In The City 2 always spring to mind.

The review in Empire magazine for the mawkish Sandra Bullock vehicle "Hope Floats" contained the following barbed witticism. "Hope Floats. So does vomit if properly directed."
