On a diet of about four films per day including Mike Leigh's Another Year, Gregg Araki's Kaboom, the cultish possessed car tyre movie Rubber, Woody Allen's You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, and Hideo Nakata's Chatroom, I can't argue that most food groups aren't being served this year, but who is looking like Chef of the Cannes kitchen at the halfway point?

Good to hear the Gregg Araki film is good, one of his last films 'Mysterious Skin' was the "My Own Private Idaho' of the generation, but a better film than that and Brokeback Mountain in my opinion.
I reckon Apichatpong Weerasethakul might be running for the Palme d'or. Mike Leigh has already won it before, Cannes seem to begrudge handing out the bestowed honours to a director more than once, well only the Dardennes have. Cannes seem to hand out the honours to directors who's previous films have done quite well....

I'm looking forward to Loach's new film, Route Irish, especially as 'Looking for Eric' was a disappointment; I hope Loach can redeem himself.
Now, Dr Kermode, do you think Loach's film could be a contender for the Palm d'or? Or do you think it, at least, would be better than Mike Leigh's 'Another Year'?

Why is it Woody Allen films are now always judged against work he did 30 years ago? Surely if this was just another rom-com by a diffeent director it wouldn't be judged so harshly? Do directors have to live up to past films espically as wen making said films they didn't know how crititcally acclaimed they would be. Do you just expect too much?

i always look forward to a ken loach film. 'looking for eric' was one of last year's best.
is 'splice' being shown in cannes?
