Top of the mornin' to ya...

| 09:35 UK time, Wednesday, 3 January 2007

Happy New Year to you all from West London. I have to admit I'm a little bit depressed to be here this morning, but if you check out the photograph of where I spent the last few days seeing in '07 with my nearest and dearest I'm sure you'll understand why.
Thank you to Rosbeg, near Donegal in Ireland for a wonderful stay, and for teaching me what proper weather is!

So whilst I've been out in the wilds of Ireland for a few days, I've managed to cast my eyes over a newspaper or two but the internet and television have been total strangers to me. All I've learnt from the papers I have read is how to change my life, lose half a stone, and become a better person in a week, but not much that will help set up today's programme. Any thoughts much appreciated as always!

I spent some time on my Easy jet flight back last night thinking about my carbon footprint. I'm sure I'm not the only one to have taken advantage of a cheap flight or two in 2006, should I be feeling guilty? Can't I just make sure I sign up to one of the schemes that plant trees to offset the damage caused to the environment each time you fly? I read an article recently which raised questions over one or two of these schemes, I'm going to dig it out now and see if it raises any interesting talking points for the programme.

Here are some of the stories catching the attention of BBC News online readers:

Celebrities have been asked to check scientific evidence before speaking publicly on campaigns such as MMR.

Chat show Oprah Winfrey has opened a school in South Africa to give young girls from the poorest families an education.

The Spanish government has announced that peace talks with Eta are now over following the bomb which brought down Barajas airport at the weekend. Is their 38 year campaign for a Spanish state finally over?

And a finally on New Year's resolutions...what are yours? Are you adamant you have put out your last cigarette? Is this the year you finally learn that language or musical instrument you always said you would? Perhaps sharing your journey with us will give that little bit of extra incentive you need to see it through? Let us know here if you would be happy for us to follow your journey...
