Motty's day three preview

Post categories:

John Motson | 19:28 UK time, Saturday, 12 June 2010

We're five matches in to the World Cup in South Africa. After comfortable wins for South Korea and Argentina on day two and England's opening match, of course, here's my preview to Sunday's matches at the World Cup, including Germany's first game against Australia.

    Hey, I rate Motty very much, but I have to say, this analysis especially of Serbia, Ghana and Germany lacks a bit of details (it is almost the stuff every one (even with no clue) says about this teams).

    Germany for example will not play with Podolski upfront (left midfield). Hans-Jorg Butt is their 5th choice GK and he played in the Champions League Final this season, Neuer did an heck of a job against Porto in the CL a few years ago... so I assume he will be atleast pretty solid. This is probably the best german side since 1996. This team (!) lacks only in experience in my opinion.

    Yes, somewhat lazy analysis this time, Motty. Not even the slightest mention of the Serbian striker - Nikola Zigic - who has just joined Birmingham City, and is taller than Peter Crouch!!

    I could not watch the video, but I think the Germans will win easly. They & the Serbs will qualify from this group. Algeria v Slovinia, score draw.

    John, can you please find out the follwoing stats:
    1. The average number of times England pass pack to the goalkeeper compared to most other teams
    2. The average length of pass compared to most other teams

    I can't believe this hasn't been picked up before as I believe it fundamentally identifies one of our key problems, namely we can't keep the ball!

    Last night there were numerous occasions, infact it was the norm, where the player with the ball didn't have any options within 30 yards - you wantch Spain, Brazil, Argentina or even Mexico and USA - they have 3 or 4 players within 10 yards - short quick passes, lots of movement and they keep possession whist making us run around, which opens up spaces - am I the only one who can see this?

    Great stuff Motty but you never actually predicted anything! We want to know who you think are going to win, lose or draw the matches. Keep up the good work.

    I will say that the serbs are going to be the surprise package for this World Cup Tournament I see them advance to the quarter Final atmost, Germany as always are big contenders, I think this year's Final will be played between Germany and Netherlands. I will go with Netherlands on this one.

    To 4. that is what Motty has been doing for the last 40 years or so! He just says 'Oh and it would be disastrous if they score now' in the 93rd minute at 1-1 in the FA Cup final. Terrible, irritating commentary is his thing.

    Algeria put pressure on England to perform in crucial group B decider:
    Algeria v Slovenia 3-1 (Algeria 80% of the possession);

    Germany to top Group D from Ghana:
    Sebia v Ghana 2-2 (Vidic red card);
    Germany v Australia 2-1 (referee fails to see multiple blatant penalties for the Australians, while finding an innocuous one for the Germans);

    How is it that in a blog about the likes of Germany, Ghana and Serbia you manage to mention England or English teams more than anything else? We already know about the premier league players, why not tell us about some players we aren't so familiar with?

    However who comes second is a much tricker question, both Ghana and Serbia are strong teams. Although Serbia (in my opinion) have a stronger team, I reckon this advantage will be cancelled out by the extra support Ghana will have. It could go either way!

    Motty, How are you coping with the constant "bee" noise coming from the vuvuzela? My head is still buzzing since last night! You would think that Auntie Beeb would have learned from the Confederation Cup and brought in some hardware or software to filter out this terrible noise. It is definitely spoiling the World Cup for me!
