World Cup 2006 Blog

From our reporters in Germany

Is Torres Man United's main man?

phil_mcnulty.gifBADEN-BADEN - England's World Cup win against Ecuador was top of the agenda in Stuttgart - but there was a hot little rumour doing the rounds among the foreign media.

Namely, that Manchester United are close to sealing a £20m deal for Atletico Madrid's brilliant Spanish striker Fernando Torres.

Torres, a powerful goalscoring 22-year-old, has been an outstanding figure in a Spain side that looks like it may finally banish the years of under-achievement and make a major impact at a World Cup.

And the word on the World Cup grapevine in Stuttgart was that United are in pole position to sign Torres - although(surprise, surprise) Chelsea lurk in the background.

But one of the finest imports to English football in the last 25 years, a man with good contacts abroad and who now works in the foreign media, told me Spanish emissaries have already been dispatched to Manchester to find a home for Torres.

Time will tell if this is true, but if you are Manchester United fan, would you prefer the young and hungry Torres to the increasingly marginalised Ruud van Nistelrooy?

The prospect of having Torres sign for Man Utd is amazing !

We can't wait to see him in a Man Utd shirt, moreover, it brings more flair to our side with Roo & Ron linking up to him.

How many spanish forwards have succeeded in the premiership? How many 22 year olds with a massive price tag on their shoulders have come from abroad and succeeded.
I'd rather fergie sorted out the ruud situation. He is a united legend.

Enough about England playing poorly and yet progressing and all the transfer gossip!

Let us focus on something much more interesting. Pot Noodles! Mmmmmm

Pot Noodle Facts:

-Pot Noodles are vegetarian friendly and contain no meat (even the Beef and Tomato or chicken varieties use Textured Soya Pieces, hmmmm nice!).

-They are based on foods designed by NASA for early astronauts.

-Scientists working at the Food Standards Agency have discovered that the nutritional value of used cat litter is higher than that of Pot Noodle and other re-constituted snacks.

It will take more than £20M to get hold of "El Niño". The board of Atleti know that his value is rising with every World Cup Goal he scores.

In addition Atleti are financially okay at the moment, they don't need to sell him and I don't think he wants to go. He has always that said that if he goes, it will have to be for the good of the club, and the signings of Costinha, Aguero et al mean that Atleti should be pushing to get back into Europe next year - something Torres will want to be part of.

But to be honest, if you'd have seen him play week in week out last season (I have a season ticket at the Calderon), you'd say he was worth about £5M only. He was poor most games.

Still, maybe Chelsea do want to buy him and play Torres, Drogba, Shevchenko, Kalou, Duff, Robben, Wright-Phillips, Cole, Ballack and Lampard up front in a revolutionary 0-0-10 formation!

The Torres whisper comes from a reputable source and it appears the whole story has gathered pace in the last week.
Being the decent chap I am, I thought I would share this little titbit with you all.
I would not have mentioned it if I thought there was nothing in it.
One word of caution though - many have tried to prise Torres away from Atletico and none have succeeded.

I'm a United fan who would love to see Fernando Torres palying at Old Trafford. I remember seeing him play a few years ago while i was on holiday, he was playing for Atletico Madrid against Barcelona at the Nou Camp on the opening day of the 2002/03 season. Even then you could see he had what it takes to be a top player and judging by his performances at the World Cup so far he seems to have got better and better.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy on the other hand is a player I have had the utmost espect for ever since he came to the Premiership. Until now. It seems to me (and plenty of other United supporters, I'm sure) like over the past year he's completely lost interest and the work-rate just isn't there like it used to be. And looking at the World Cup he's just had, I wouldn't want to count on him next season, especially as it's a season where we clearly neeed all our players firing on all cylinders if we want to top Chelsea.

I for one would certainly prefer to have the young and hungry Torres playing at my club over a lazy, whingy Van Nistelrooy...

And as a Spurs fan who is bitter that Daniel Levy never followed up Roman Abramovitch's interest in Tottenham, if any club can get to a player before Chelsea I'll be happy. It looks like we're getting there with Zokora, and I hope United get there with Torres too. It can only be good for the Premiership. He's a great player and at 22 will only get better, RVN is a great player too but if United have any sence, they will sign Torres. He's younger, hungrier and overall he's a better footballer.

This is a strategically terrific move by Fergie. If he spends the bulk of his transfer money on Torres it gives him a fearsome set of young attacking talent including Rooney, Ronaldo, Saha, Rossi, Park and Richardson.
The key is whether they can do a deal that sees Ruud go to Lyon in part exchange for Diarra.
Does that get Man Utd what they need to win the title? Read some additional thoughts and vote here:

I think it's almost inevitable that Ruud is finished at United and will be on his way (for about £12m) in the summer. Fergie will obviously want to replace him and Torres makes perfect sense. He's young, quick, strong and has shown at the world cup that he can score goals (even if he has hardly set the world alight in an average Athletico Madrid side).

I think this deal will happen - Chelsea won't go after him as they've already signed Shevchenko and Kalou to go with Drogba and it's too rich for Arsenal's blood; plus the top Italian sides aren't in a position to bid due to legal troubles, barca don't need a striker and he would never move across Madrid to Real.

Now if only Fergie would realise that Michael Carrick CAN'T tackle and is NOT worth £14m and instead spend the money on Mascherano United might actually be in a position to challenge for the title next season.

If they don't sign world class players, how can they overcome Chelsea for trophy.

Our football style over the last season has evolved over the last few years from the Becks-Giggs-Keane-Scholes midfield. We played with two wide players crossing the ball to two main strikers.

Now the tactics are different, we sometimes play with one striker with two players roaming behind him linking the play. Van Nistlerooy does not suit this at all as he plays with his back towards goals and prefers two traditional wingers.
He is a traditonal big centre forward who loves crosses. In the World Cup, Holland's tactics don't suit him as both Persie and Robben like to cut inside and are not your typical crossers of the ball. He misses Becks and the old Giggsy too much. Saha has been more successful and comfortable when playing in front of Ronaldo and Rooney. This is because Saha is more agile and versatile, he can drop deep easily. So Ruud will leave because of his problems with Fergie but also he doesn't suit our tactics for the forthcoming season.

Torres is a lot more agile and quick than Ruud. he has the ability drop deep to pick up the ball. i read somewhere that he can run 100m around the 10 second mark. So he is quicker.

Torres would suit our tactics perfectly.

4-3-3 formation

Torres-Rooney-Ronaldo

DM-DM-Giggsy/Park

Heinze-Vidic/Brown-Rio-Neville

Van was the man at his peek, united cant afford to keep him if he has passed his best (which i think he has) thus his time should be over at United. Ferguson has always been rutheless and should continue to be so, whether he has had a falling out with Ruud or not is immaterial, being a United player is about being the best.

As long as we don't pay way over the odds, Torres would be the ideal partner for Rooney, perhaps by selling ruud we can find the funds to get him. However, we definitely need a new centre-midfielder. Carrick is a good idea but Mascherano would be more worth spending £15 for. If we have money left over after that another midfield playmaker can be bought, such as Riquelme, to support our strikers. We also need to let Richardson, Rossi and our other younger players develop as they are the stars of OT's future.

Not a United fan, but gotta say that even though he has a few goals in the tournament dont think Torres is all that special.

His fourth goal against Ukraine showed lovely technique but I dont know exactly what kind of striker he is. Doesnt have great pace to play of the shoulder, great strength to hold the ball up, or great dribbling skills to beat men. Missed a few chances against Tunisia where he should have bagged a hat-trick at least.

Infact most spanish fans I ran into in Germany lasdt week gave the impression that he is a bit flakey when playing for Athletico in La Liga.

Tevez looks a far more exciting proposition IMO, although he does reimind one of Rooney, and what about united going in for Klose, surely the most improved player at the Tournament?

i agree with a lot of the other posts too about our midfield, finally replacing keano should be our priority this summer. we cant expect o'shea/giggs/fletcher to compete with the likes of makelele/lampard/ballack, we need 2 midfielders, one a ball winner like gattuso or mascherano, and a match winner like riquelme or maxi.
heinze will be like a new signing to us to the defence will be ok next year.
we saw last year that chelsea are beatable, and can go on bad runs too, so lets get this sorted united and take back our trophy

What are we waiting for?

As a united fan for some considerable time i have seen my fair share of newspaper goss about players going to OT. But finally it seems as though the papers have got it right. Torres would be an awesome signing for us, if we could get anywhere near the money we payed for RVN if we sold him it would be a great piece of business by SAF. How many other clubs can say that they sold an unhappy 30yr old striker and bought an up and coming, potential world beating 22 yr old for a minor loss.

Get the deal(s) done SAF, ASAP!!. dont want another ronaldinho situation.

As far as the team goes i think the midfield definately needs work, lerts not forget that scholesy is back and wil give us a bit of spark in that area, a new keano is a must though (like the look of mascherano for the Argies).

What does everyone reckon bout the goalkepping no.2 position? foster good enough? or does someone else need to come in?

Torres v RVN no contest..... Ruud is a proven Premiership goalscorer - his record speaks for itself. Now bring Torres in to play alongside with Rooney just off them would be AWESOME. I would prefer to see us go for someone with a bit more pedigree and experience. The boy Saviola has looked amazing in the competition and is available, though would except that he might be too small and the link up play with Rooney would be effected by his lack of height.
For me, we need 2 midfielders - Riquelme and Reo Coker would be my preferences, and a forward. Tevez would be my dream player at OT but accept that he will probably be out of our price range.
Cheers, Mike.

Torres and Rooney! Torres and Rooney! TORRES AND ROONEY! seriously the more i say it the better it sounds. Torres is the ideal replacement for van Nistelrooy, like Nistelrooy he is a fox in the box, but with so much more to offer! his link up play, vision and flair is fantastic, not forgetting he has bags of pace to say the least. Don't get me wrong van Nistelrooy is a legend and at one stage in his career he was untouchable but saddly that stage is dissapearing fast. Its not just Fergie being ruthless and stubborn, other world class coaches can now see rudd is not what he was. just look at the match last night (Holland vs Portugal) in the final twenty minutes the game was crying out for the van Nistelrooy we think we know and love, a big name player on the biggest stage but van Basten didn't want to know, he had no confidence in his 'star' striker. It also seems the only club showing real interest in the striker is Bayern Munich. Once apon a time (less than a year ago!!!) the biggest clubs in Europe would be willing to offer Manchester United huge amount of money for this lethal goal predator, but it seems Manchester Utd couldn't give him away due to his age and wage demands. This brings us back to his 'expected' replacement Torres, you could say it is like buying van Nistelrooy all over again but with added pace and flair, for around the same price, a suggested 20 million. Let me tell you now if Torres joins Manchester United for 20 million Sir Alex Ferguson will not stop laughing for years to come. Athletico Mardrid are not stupid, they know what they heve in torres, the whole of europe know what Athletico have. This is not a one or two horse race for 'El Nino' it is more of a twenty horse race with the likes of Chelsea being the Red Rum of the pack, they are able to outbid any offer for Torres, However only one club holds the key to where Torres will play his football next season is Athletico Madrid, they know that Torres seems to be the most layal boy in history of the world, insisting he will never leave Athletico unless they ask him to go, the question is will they ask him?

Well I reckon that if Man U are getting Torres they'd be as well to hang on to Nistelshits and get rid of Saha or Smith (who'll never be the same player again - that's right Mr Shaun Wright_phillips.... you won't be the first or the last).

Torres is ace and it would be great to see him get the crap kicked out of him on a weekly basis by the likes of Fulham, Bolton, Charlton, Everton, Sheffield United. However even the names of those places will put him off. Let alone Warnocks ugly face.

Face it you miseries. Beckham has had his day. BAck in 2004 he showed he ws absolutley run out. Yes, he might be able to do one or two good things in a match. Aaron Lennon could probably do 2 million. Please let's move on and get the next generation of young, enthusiastic people that dare to TAKE ON defenders rather than lauch V2 style passes and pray that Rooney gets on the end (hmmm shades of banging it up to Owen....)

I hate to disagree with Butcher or infact any incompetent ITV bullshitter. What absolute nonsense, none of them EVER speak any sense and hasn't anyone killed Venables yet? Christ shoot him. If i hear the words 'spare man' or 'through the channels' anymore from such a complete gobshite i might actually have to initiate an I hate sport on ITV campaign.

From such great pundits as Andy Townsend , Ally McCoist (I mean Ally McCoist????), Butcher, Venables, Pleat, Atkinson they have ALL been extremely boring and should never ever be allowed to appear on national television ever again.

Apparently there is some kind of Tennis Tournament on (wow). Don't let the Missus blag you!!!!

Peace out everybody

Also wid Howard goin on loan nxt season we need a decent no.2 4 VDS cos if he gets injured wer stuck wid reserve keepers like luke steel cos foster will probs still b on loan at watford nxt season. Plus we need a replacement 4 VDS he cant go on 4eva. Keepers like Sebastian Frey n mayb Buffon if juve get regelated 2 serie B in italy.

Plus i reckon Ballack n Sheva have onli 1 more season in them b4 they start 2 age

Ronaldo/Park Carrick/Diarria Scholes/Requleme Giggs/Richarson

I just wonder about the truth of it all. Some guy on http://www.footballfanzone.net is adamant that Torres will be a United player.... but I have it from good sources that Carrick is also a dead cert to be going up north. So that almost £35m on two players. One of the things that let Utd down last season I felt, was there lack of a squad. So much money on two players, given recent talk about a restricted transfer kitty.... just doesn't add up for me.

Shouldn't we spend £20-£30 mill on Riquelme and Mascerano. Or why not try to get a few good seasons out of Gatusso, easily the best midfielder in the Italian side. Is Torres just a signing to try and make a statement to Chelsea or can ferguson realy see a future for Ruud, Rooney, Torres and Saha all capable of at least 20 goals a season. Carrick would be a good signing, he showed he is capable of becoming world class against Ecuador.

Torres would be a great buy, Van Nistlerooy is past it despite flashes of brilliance and is his pedigree in Europe he lacks the pace he once had to beat defenders. Also after players fall out with Fergie it never realy works again. This is all good as long as Fergie buys two midfielders.
Creative:
1. Riquelme
2. Fabregas (no chance but it would be nice)
3. Carrick
Defensive:
1. Mascerano
2. Gattuso
3. Diarra (over-priced)

5) THE RISKY ATTEMPT TO WIN THE PREMIERSHIP AND THE CHAMPISONS LEAGUE; FERGUSON MIGHT WANT TO EMULATE ARSENAL'S "THE BEST FORM OF DEFENCE IS ATTACK" THEORY AFTER THEY HAD A HUGE SUCCESS WITH THIS IN THE C.LGE. TORRES WOULD CERTAINLY GIVE MAN UTD MORE FIREPOWER FOR THEIR ATTACK. HE MIGHT BE THINKING THAT THE PARTNERSHIP OF 2 WONDERKIDS (ROONEY, TORRES) WOULD BE TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE
6) THIS TIME TO BUY TORRES WOULD BE THE IDEAL TIME AS LATER ON HIS PRICE TAG MIGHT BE SO HIGH AFTER HIS WORLD CUP PERFORMANCES, THAT EVEN CHELSEA WOULD STRUGGLE TO BID FOR THIS INDISPENSIBLE PLAYER FOR AT.MADRID

ALL THESE WOULD BE THE REASONS TO WHY AMN UTD WOULD BE INTERESSTED IN TORRES, YET THIS COULD ALSO LEAD TO SEVERE COSEQUENCES IN THE FUTURE IF SUCCESS IS NOT ACHIEVED EG GLAZER CRISIS: ARE MILLIONS IN DEBT DUE TO LOANS AND THE MIDFIELD PROBLEM COULD BE WORSENED AS THE SEASON GOES BY

I personally do not see any wits in getting rid of one of the best strikers in the world with a proven track record, who has basically smashed every goalscoring record at Utd and paying crazy money for someone who has had a few good games in the world cup!

Let's get real....it is time for Sir Alex to step down and allow new ideas come into force at Utd.

He simply has got it all wrong in the transfer market during the past 4-5 years. Forget about paying £30m for Rooney or Rio....look at the other flops he has bought with big money and sold cheaply!

Please Sir Alex Ferguson step down while you are still a legend and live the rest of your life as a legend!

I agree with most of what has been said. Van Nistelrooy has been amazing at United. He will go down in history at the club as a goalscorer. But you have to be relistic and sometimes the reality can be a harsh thing. The fact of the matter is, that if Ruud isnt scoring then he is of no value to the club other than the substantial transfer fee, which can be slapped on his head. I would be glad to see him stay but he will need to improve. Sir Alex Ferguson has his doubt and so it appears does Van Basten.

Torres would bring a new element in attack and I think he would link up well with Rooney. He is a proven goalscorer as well so if he is given time then I think he could be a success for the devils.

While midfield is the priority, I certainly won't be unhappy with this signing. I look at players attributes other than statistics, and when I've seen Torres it seems he has excellent movement off the ball, good skill on the ball and also pace and strength. He fits our new team very well, he's young, willing to work hard and technically very skilled. He'll be involved in the build alot more than Ruud was, and the team will benefit. Don't mistake this post for an anti-van nistelrooy one though, the guy is a true United legend. A goal ratio of 3 in 4 is ridiculously good, and our team has benefitted tremendously from it. However, recently he hasn't been the same, he moves much less, doesn't have much pace anymore and doesn't fit as well into our team. I've been in denial about it for a while now, but I'm realising that it's time to move on from Ruud.

On the midfield - I'm hoping Riquelme is coming, we are in dire need of someone of his ability at creating from the midfield and being able to dictate the pace of a game. Hopefully get Mascherano too, he's strong, technically skilled and tackles excellently, all things we need in our midfield.

I think people are under estimating the importance of scholesy coming back from his freak injury, are we just gonna bring riquelme in and leave scholesy on the bench?
I think Carrick has been excellent all last season and proved he can cut it in the premiership, I know Arsene Wenger is a fan and lets face it he's rarely wrong!
About gettin a quality defender? Why? G Neville the worlds best right back, Rio - class act, Heinze - World Class, Vidic - looks the business to me, Wes B - unsung hero! we,ve got Evra to build form last season, Bardsley comming thru Man U born and bread, O'Shea would get in many prem sides, Young Pique!
I do think offloading Fletcher and Silvestre has to happen and with the money we made of Obi Mikel and maybe Ruud, we could be big spenders!
Lets not overlook the power of SAF's mind games, Ruud could come back stronger than ever, however I heard he wanted to leave last summer but we persueded him to stay, thinks he's keeping quiet for his loyalty bonus to be honest, but what a player he has been lets not turn our backs on him.....Man Utd legend!

We need to spend money in order to win all the trophies at stake next season. Cos Chelsea is targetting all 4 trophies at stake of which Utd is part. Utd shdnt been labelled as a "chisel" team. Lets spend to get the results that will make all of Utd fans happy

At this point he is good enough that we can still sell him for close to 10 million. That won't be th case next year when he is 30.

In Torres, we're getting one of the best young talents in the world and a player who fits into our stlye of play - he is pacey, mobile and a great finisher. Most importantly, he is at an age where he'll grow with the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo, Rossi, Richardson and Park.

Imagine the trouble the movement of Torres and Rooney will cause for opposition defences. Add to that the movement and pace of the likes of Richardson, Park and Ronaldo, and then the finsihing of Rossi. We'll have one of the best attacking line-ups in Europe.

Riquelme would not be a good signing, as it would add another player in the area where big wayne plays.
Instead if we sign two of Carrick, Mascherano and Diarra, the midfield would be strengthened enough for the team to seriously challenge Chelsea.
However, another winger may be a better option, to add balance to the team as Park is not really premiership standard.
A 1st eleven of:

VDS
Nev Rio Wes Heinze
Ronaldo Scholes Carrick WINGER
Rooney
Torres

Would be unstoppable, especially with Smith, Saha, Mascherano, Vidic etc on the bench.

Torres will be a good buy for united, but i want Riquelme to come to united too. He is also a world class player.

We'll see what turns up. Hopefully not a new high profile error to add to the myriad of the past few seasons.

I wouldn't sign him. A much better signing is Nihat (A Turkish international who has played too long in Real Socieded). He could be bought for a song, and is genuinely a top class payer.

If Nihat was Brazilian you'd pay 10 million or more for him.

Forget Torres. It's a mistake.

SCORE GOALS!!! He was also one of a handful of players who supported Roy Keane when he felt certain players were not performing to the high standards that are expected at a club of Uniteds Magnitude. As for Carrick i dont think he is any different to what we have already! I would prefer to see Mascherano or Diarra players of that ilk.

I admit that he did seem to struggle at times last season but i think injuries/formation/midfield etc should be taken into account and let's not forget he did still finish in the top few scorers in the Premiership!! Keep the Dutchman unless an offer comes in too good to turn down.
The talk of Torres sounds great based on recent form, but i do agree that it seems alot for someone who played too many average games for Atletico last year. That is part of the gamble you take when you purchase on the basis of future potential though!!
Would love to see either Senna (Spain) or Mascherano (Argentina) playing at the Theatre of Dreams next year, preferably the latter who i reckon is an unsung hero of their team and truly a defensive midfield player worthy of attempting to fill the huge boots of one Mr Keane....as good a player as he is, there's just too much focus on Riquelme for me!! Remember a similar playmaking Argentinian we did spend big on......think Mascherano would be more suited to our style of play and fills a position we desperately need filling.
Fingers crossed the Ginger Maestro will be back to his best next year after a freak injury, even though he's 31 he's still got a few years yet, and buys us some time before we need to find his long term replacement. Ryan Giggs and Scholsey are still quality!!
Depending on the finances would love Stevie G in the Red and White........the boy is pure class and England's one true World Class midfielder, coupled with Mascherano and Torres, the Premiership would be heading back up the M1!!

I want to touch upon a related subject.
Senderos was the hero of Swiss team, Cesc Fbregas starts his match against France for Spain,Leihmann is preferred by Germany over Khan,Van Persie shines for Holland;Jumberg was the live wire player of Sweden;Toure and Eboue excelled in their matches for Ivory coast; Rosicky was the star of the first match against USA for Czech.
Ashley Cole saved England from humiliation from Equador & played hard for 90 minutes.
Do you get where I am going. All these Heroes of World cup and Henry and Walcott play for Arsenal.
If I were Arsene Wenga, I will be mighty pleased at the performance of these boys. I do not think that any other team in Premier League can boast such a performance in the world Cup.
I strongly feel that Arsenal will perform very well in 2006-2007 season with all these stars. If we have to be reach the top, we have to be stronger than not only Chelsea but also Arsenal.
As a Manu Fan, I would like to strengthen my Midfield with proven stars like Senna, Mescharano etc and buy committed, young and proven forwards like Torres. I am scared of expensive Argentine midfielders like Requelme
I am also impressed by Sule Muntari of Ghana. He wants to come to ManU. He may come cheap and he can eventually replace the ageing Giggs.

RVN is a legend BUT, he is 29, past his best, has attitude problems and is obvisouly causing some sort of trouble in the dressing room. Realistically this is the last year United can expect to get anything near 10 million for him. It would make perfect sense sell him for a singificant amount now and buy younger, upcoming talent who is more suited to United stlye of play.

In Torres we have just the player. No, he is not quite the finisher RVN is, but he is still a stronh finsisher and his other attributes mean a United with Torres are stronger than a United with RVN. Torres is quicker, more mobile, strong, will drop deep if needed and is more creative.

Imagine how much trouble Torres and Rooney's movement and pace will give other defences? Add to that the pace and movement of Saha, Ronaldo, Park, Richardson and possibly, Ribery, and United will have one of the most potent attacking line-ups in Europe .

As a big big fan of 'Fer', and whilst I would love to see him in the Premiership for Utd. (even as a City fan) I'm inclined to say that this wouldn't be the wisest move for Fergie - there are other areas of improvement that need to be worked on and it's debatable as to whether Torres is truly proven or not, especially at £25million..too big of a risk in my opinion.

With regard to other issues tho, whilst 5 years ago I would have scoffed at the idea of a successful young Spanish forward in the Premiership, I think England has become increasingly welcoming over recent years, with Ronaldo settling as well, not to mention Reyes, Xabi, Cesc etc. who are performing excellently. Not sure about Torres though, he speak a word of English and is extremely loyal to Atletico Madrid, even if he was convinced to move abroad, what's to say his heart would be in it - would he exhibit the same passion he does for the national site and so forth.

Someone previously mentioned merchandising as being a minor issue, but it shouldn't be overlooked, Torres does have that 'superstar' quality akin to Ronaldo, objectively speaking, and so that could help stablise a somewhat waning Utd fanbase.

Still would be a contentious signing however - I'm intruigued to say the least as to how this will play out!

unless i missed it, i kno hes not the youngest anymore but ghanas appiah, i believe plays at parma, would be a good signing at the moment
although definately agree with mascherano, corinithians ties with Chelsea may make it difficult but can hope
hes been simply superb for argentina an is my pick for them ahead of messi, with him an maxi of ath madrid also impressing me

the main topic about torres, ive seen him play in la liga amongst players with less quality than man uniteds, but still perform, however i dont believe, at this moment in time, that he can be a natural goal scorer at the top level, hes more in the rooney mould where you will get 15 goals, so i dont believe the time for ruud at united should come to an end
the only confirmed big money bid united have made is for carrick, an i believe its just englands world cup win/elimination stopping that move from being complete

the need for other players in other positions cant be ignored, i think man united should, if arsenal dont get him first, have a look at trabelsi at a alternative to gary neville, or if not a younger player as thats a position which will need cover in the future

my dream signing, the one i want the most, is riquelme, bar their match with mexico, an that was down to an incredible team display by them, argentinas entire attack has been controled by him , he almost plays a holding role just outside their penalty area an his vision surpasses i think any player since zidane in his prime, hes world class, with great strength on the ball, excellant set pieces which man united have lacked since beckhams departure to the bernabau

summary... guys id like united to get

1. riquelme
2. mascherano
3. appiah
4. carrick
5. trabelsi
6. torres (if united discard rvn)
7. maxi rodriguez

Manchester Utd fans, you are kidding yourselves if you think you can seriously sign the players you've been talking about for the past 200 posts. Foreigner footballers just don't want to live in Manchester/Cheshire. You can't compete with London let alone Madrid, Barcelona or Milan. All though the location of the club isn't the only factor in choosing the club they want to play for it must be a pretty important factor. Language, climate, food and culture are so different.

Why oh why is Ferguson messing bout trying to splash out 20 million pounds out of a not much bigger budget on a striker!! If Ruud was to go we would be left with Rooney, Saha, Rossi, Alan Smith!! That is not a bad line up especially considering how dire our midfield is!! I think Fergie should be thinking about spending all that money on getting in a new midfield.

I say keep Ruud and i'll follow that up with something contraversial....get rid of Ronaldo (who I think is seriously over rated!)....apparently he wants to go to Real anyway, make over 20 million on him, buy Carrick, Lennon, Downing and if he'll have us, Riquelme, if not Cahill. Then lets see if we can challenge for silverware.

fajioo, in respect of Ronaldo, I think he is a good player but I don't think he fits into our team. He gives the ball away too much, he breaks up passing movements by trying to run at defenders.

Last season it was more or less the strikers (Rooney, Ruud and Saha) that kept us on our toes. Why change a winning formula up front when it is clear our midfield is lacking. If Ruud fell out with Ronaldo and then Fergie backed Ronaldo, and then Ronaldo repays United by having talks and pledging allegiance with prospective Real president candidates, then I say it is better to keep Ruud, don't buy Torres, sell Ronaldo and buy a midfield that works to support our already prolific attack.

Christiano Ronaldo showed his cynicism towards the beautiful game with his little wink having provoked Rooney. It was no surprise. His legs give way week in week out as if shot by a machine gunner in the English league. Many, many people now believe Ronaldo is a cheat. Many believe there is no other word for it. That's fair enough, he is welcome to allegedly cheat in his own league, but he sucks cash out of English fans at the same time. It would be great to have fewer cheats in British football. Maximum 2 foreign players per team in the Premiership, as advocated by Sepp Blatter.

I would like to see the money from this sale, as well as the Mikel added to our so called war chest in order to restore the faith in the club amongst us supporters, who are becoming increasingly annoyed in the lack of transfer activity. I Do think we need to be realistic and note that we arent going to land x number of star players however a selected few would be of great benifit. WE need at least 2 midfielders, 1 striker to replace Ruud and a new world class goal keeper/ if not keeper foster as understudy to v.der saar !!! Their are some reports in the papers on the Torres front, which could indicate some truth in the story ...

if man united purchase fernando torres then i think we will win the premiership in 06/07 season, just think centre backs in the league will be trembling in fear to think that they have to come against torres and rooney!!! get rid of van nistlerooy, torres will offer alot more to man uniteds attack then ruud will. And what the hell is ferguson thinkin putting in an off for defoe n that west brom goalkepper. Ferguson, purchase torres n we will win the league and also dont give up on trying to lure riquelme and guttose with them and torres manchester united will be unstoppable.

I dont think anyone can argue that Ruud has been one of the most prolific strikers in the premiership. However if it is a choice between keeping Ruud and buying Torres then i would prefer that we bought the spaniard. Although not as consistent as Ruud in the scoring department it cannot be argued that Torres is one of the most exciting young talents in the world (along with rooney ronaldo, messi and teves) The possible frontline next season (rooney ronaldo and torres) looks a force to be reckoned with!! Fergie please buy Torres and 2 midfielders then we can challenge for the title!
