As part of your 'Obama Fest' this AM you asked for a piece of music which sums up America. I suggest you look at Amazing Grace. Contrary to the conventional wisdom this was not composed in America but by John Newton the captain of a British slaver -The Greyhound - sometime after 1748 when the ship and its crew were delivered from a violent storm by what they could only assume was the Grace of God.

Thereafter the hymn was adopted as the marching song of the anti-slavery movement and taken up by black gospel across the USA. Its message of hope over adversity ends with the swearing in of a black American president which completes the journey of the american people from darkness into light over 260 years rather than the few hours of terror endured by the captain, crew and 'passengers' of the Greyhound.

    With best wishes

I thought i had somehow managed to pick up ABC instead of 5Live today and what did i learn from this totally over the top coverage ( as usual )
    A. Poor old Vicky didn't manage to wangle a seat on the Beeb freebie to Washington

    B. some Americans living here are "excited"

    C. Some English people are inexplicably ( to me at any rate ) "excited"

    D. Some other English people will be watching telly at 5pm

    E. A Scottish guy from Dumbarton isnt " excited"

What a total over reaction to a "History" yes we could have expected some extra coverage but every show! Asking the same questions and getting the same answers.
It would have been easier, cheaper and just as illuminating just to put Nicky Campbell on a loop all day then you lot could have had your Obamafest in private.

    Rubbish BBC

What is all this nonsense about 'history being made'?

This isn't the first inauguration, three months after the actual election, that's taken place.

If its 'history' because its an Afro American being elected and its supposed to usher in a new era in US politics, then it just goes to show how in he 'free world' the masses can be totally brainwashed!

Now that all this hype is over we might just see what Obama's policies are. The reason why his inaugural speech was so short and lacking in policy underlines that this will be just another Democrat administration that will simply allow the Republican's back!
