Week 1 - Red Button Commentary: Best Bits

Post categories:

BBC Strictly James | 13:50 UK time, Thursday, 6 October 2011

A new addition to Strictly this year is the alternative Red Button commentary. On Saturday 8th of October Karen Hardy will be casting her choreographer's eye over the dancefloor with 2010 finalist Pamela Stevenson.

The first celebrity superfan to join Karen for last week's shows was funny girl Katy Brand - who has some dancing experience of her own. A very memorable rendition of Beyonce's Single Ladies on Let's Dance for Sport Relief. Here's a little recap of their commentary...

I can't watch apart from online, but judging from this vid it's a real shame that the commentary isn't available on iPlayer!

Sorry but what a load of rubbish.
I tried this for about 10 seconds of Rory's dance and then turned it off.
Not funny to have a stand up comedy thing going on there.
Red Button should be expert commentary - ie saying what figures are being danced... (not going on about Scott Robinson).
Sorry but it will be a big no no for me in the future. Karen I thought better of you.

After one dance I turned it off. Very distracting. I'm happy to wait for the judges' verdict :);)

With all the job losses at the BBC announced today, the SCD Producers waste money employing an unfunny comedian to make fatuous remarks - in vision and drowning out the music!! I put the red button on for the first Cha Cha with Holly & Artem on Friday night, and couldn't switch it off fast enough! Far too distracting to have 2 people in vision, often obscuring the dancers, thereby making the choreography redundant. Dance is nothing without music, and all you could hear was constant chatter and giggling, absolutely ridiculous, and if I'd worked hard all week to create and present a dance to the public and Judges, I'd be very annoyed to have my efforts trampled on in this clunky way.
No. Bring back proper red button expert commentary on the technical aspects of the dancing and routines with Karen by herself, out of vision, and stop turning SCD into Carry On Strictly!

I live in Ireland and I have Sky box and I was wondering do the red button apply to us in Ireland. I never tried to press the red button on the sky remote, I would be afraid that I would do something wrong to the sky box.

What a waste of Karen Hardy's talents the red button "service" was - with the mindless and totally unfunny prattling of Katy Brand going on throughout each dance. Disappointed to see that Karen will have a guest with her each week - she doesn't need any such "assistance". The 90 seconds or so available during the dance could be used for Karen's expert opinions - which, as on her CC spot on SCD-ITT are really helpful to a non-expert like myself. I don't want to hear her talked down by someone who knows nothing but is full of their own self-importance.
I'm sure Katy Brand trousered a reasonable fee for her "work" - and,as Lilly_Lane mentions in her excellent post above, on a day when the BBC announces 20% cuts and 2,000 job losses, payments to Katy Brand (and the other celebrities in following weeks) for a totally unnecessary task is surely an unjustifiable waste of money!
I won't be using the red button service again!

People who want the red button commentary are going to be people interested in technical details not what some so called comedian has said. I tried it for 1 dance & found it annoying so switched off.

Just have Karen doing it & save the comedians for It Takes Too & also do away with the split screen as that was also an unnecessary distraction.

  • Comment number 8.

I agree lets just have Karens expert comments please. We turned it of after one dance. The idea is very good but no waffle.

  • Comment number 9.

i lasted watching one dance using the red button, Nothing against katy but what i wanted was commentary on the technical aspects of the dance not jibber jabber - i can provide my own jibber jabber thanks very much - or read many of the blogs such as monkseal or mrs jones that lovingly and cuttingly take the Michael.
Karen is great on choreography corner - but it is very limited. Such a wasted opportunity to actually be able understand and enjoy the dances from an expert perspective. And then re-watch on i player without the commentary - tho my preferred choice would be the option to watch the show and then have the red button commentary available on i player to pick up on the finer points after watching it as pure entertainment first.
nor is the picture within picture helpful - not only is it distracting but also blocks much of the dancing.
Epic fail instead of epic win

I agree with the other comments. I tried the red button, and the comments were far too distracting as you couldn't hear the music properly. It would be far better to have Karen on the actual show or her own special spot on It Takes Two every night. At least BBC tried something different, but it obviously doesn't work.

  • Comment number 11.

@lostchachachamp - I don't think pressing the red button will break your Sky box. If you think it might, press the red button while watching a show you're not that bothered about - that way it doesn't matter if you miss any of it.

  • Comment number 12.

Yes PLEASE the red button access should be Karen Hardy on her own commenting on how the dancers are performing including all the fine points that us viewers may be mising. We don't need the comedy and the jokes this sort of thing is suited more to an item on It Takes Two Maybe. Hopefully the producers will give our comments a try out this Saturday, have Karen on her own to see which option works out better.

  • Comment number 13.

Just wanted to echo the other comments - we want to hear Karen on her own.

  • Comment number 14.

Karen or Karen plus guest - either way I found their 'live' commentary distracting from the performances and the music, and won't be pressing the red button this weekend or during the remainder of the current series. I love Karen Hardy's insights and constructive comments but maybe they are best suited to ITT's choreography corner.

  • Comment number 15.

I'm scared to press the red button now. I mean for one thing it's red, always a bad sign, and now all these posts.

  • Comment number 16.

Agree with all the comments above. I was expecting a commentary on the dance, guiding the viewer to appreciate the technical side of the dance. I found the ITT style banter distracting, and agree that the split screen is not a good idea. A voice only commentary with just Karen, or a very small split screen (top right) would be preferable.

  • Comment number 17.

I too agree with majority. Just Karen whos knowledge is vast, but perhaps after the dance on i player replaying the dance. That way we benefit from atmosphere created by the live event unspoilt, and the technicals as well. Please give it a try. No hard feelings to Katy, but not here!

  • Comment number 18.

Do hope Strictly will take on board everyone's comments regarding the red button feature and why it doesn't work. You have the celeb trying to be funny and Karen Hardy trying to make serious dance points - Karen Hardy should record a voice over on all the dances as they are happening which will be available on the red button immediately the show is over, the BBC do this with programmes like The Dragons Den. The SCD celeb is a good idea and could be used as a feature on ITT programme with Zoe Ball as a regular weekly slot. Perhaps the celebs could be chosen from people who have danced in Strictly over the years this will give the item continunity.

  • Comment number 19.

Or people could choose to have Karen's comments instead of the judges.

  • Comment number 20.

Karen Hardy is a legend....give her her own programme

  • Comment number 21.

I am glad to see all the negative comments on this subject, so I know it was not just me. I lasted about 15 seconds on the first dance, like most of you, I want to hear expert comments not silly waffle. Lets hope the message get though.

  • Comment number 22.

Yes Karen should have her own programme . She should be doing It takes two
    not zoe Ball

  • Comment number 23.

Before the new series started I was looking forward to hearing Karen give her opinions on the "Red Button". However, I have now come to the conclusion that I will abandon watching this way unless it is continued without the the unnecessary and irritating addition of the comediene's. They add no value for those wishing to hear the expert opinion and technical opinion of Karen. It is so unnecessary to dumb down everything and those that need the comedy can stick with Bruce on the conventional screens. Please return the "Red Button" to expert commentary only which is it's real differentiator with the main screen.

  • Comment number 24.

Also tried the red button commentary last night - think we lasted half a dance before turning it off - couldn't hear the music and it was just a distraction.

  • Comment number 25.

What a shame that the commentary on the red button is just not working as mentoned before it's far too distracting! It's not necessary to have two people involved we just need Karen Hardy's expertise making the fine points on the choreography -added comedy is not necessary we have Bruce covering this. It would be far better to have the red button option available to viewers once programe has finished as happens with other programmes like Dragens Den, it may be too late for change this series but Please BBC consider for the next series. Once again please consider Karen Hardy becoming one of the judges - her knowledge of choreography is second to none and it would be so interesting on judges panel having someone commenting on this aspect of the dancing and marking appropriately.
