Claridge Kicks Off

Post categories:

Steve Claridge | 09:33 UK time, Wednesday, 19 January 2011

Welcome to 'Claridge Kicks Off' , the Football League video blog where Steve Claridge tackles all the big talking points in the Championship, League One and League Two.

This week, Steve discusses the January transfer window and looks at four Football League players who may be moving on this month: Ipswich's Connor Wickham, Millwall's Steve Morison, Southampton's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Swansea's Darren Pratley.

Steve gives his view on new Burnley boss Eddie Howe's on-off departure from Bournemouth and Leicester's decision to buy Yakubu and sell Matty Fryatt.

Steve also reflects on the return to form of new Cardiff striker Jon Parkin and compares Gavin McCallum's spectacular goal for Lincoln last weekend to a sweet strike of his own, a volley for Leicester against Manchester United in the 1997 League Cup.

In order to see this content you need to have both Javascript enabled and Flash installed. Visit BBC Webwise for full instructions. If you're reading via RSS, you'll need to visit the blog to access this content.

You can submit your questions for Steve below, or contact him on Twitter. He will answer them on a future 'Claridge Kicks Off' rather than posting a reply.

Steve you don't seem to like the transfer window much, but doesn't it help encourage football clubs to ensure they are financially stable going into the start of the season rather than relying on transfers if it all goes pear shaped? Any rule that makes clubs consider the longer term financial implications sounds like a good idea to me.
Also shouldn't any good player take opportunities of moving to bigger/better clubs when they get the chance rather than staying at the smaller club, as they may find that for example, due to injury they never get the chance again? It's a nice idea to suggest that staying at the same club is good for them, but players should be allowed to think of their future financially too. Your view is very outdated, back to the days where a transfer wouldn't equal long term financial security. One big move and a player is set up for life nowadays.
    Please try and keep up.

The transfer window is a brilliant thing for predominantly selling clubs. Danny Graham has publicly stated that he isn't going anywhere in this transfer window. But if he were, we would probably get silly money for him. That's arguably what happened with Ashley Young.

On the other side of the coin, we were desperate to buy a star striker after we got relegated, and ended up breaking our transfer record for Nathan Ellington.

This sort of punditry is pointless "let's hope Eddie Howe going to Burnley will not have soured his relationship with Bournemouth". Abysmal. Will it have done or not? Hi Steve

Longstanding AFC Bournemouth supporter. Very grateful to Eddie for the wonderful ride of the success over the last two years. Without him we would be languishing in the Conference or out of business. So many highs in such a short space of time especially Chester away in our survival year and Burton away last year. Also some excellent games this year.

His leaving has left a bitter taste in the mouth. My take is that both Eddie Howe and our chairman have been economic with the truth.

Burnley indicated at the beginning of January that they would be starting to interview the six candidates that they had put on their shopping list. With Paul Lambert and Malky Mackay not being allowed to be approached Eddie was No 3 on their list. Burnley had said that it would be a long process as they wouldn't be in a hurry given FA Cup week was approaching and it looks like their board meeting day to finalise the appointment of a new manager was fixed for Thursday 13th January.

Locally in Bournemouth it was reported that there was a last minute hitch as Eddie had decided to go to Palace on the Tuesday but at the last moment decided to stay. Presumably compensation couldn't be agreed.

Eddie said he was staying for the foreseeable future because of the players and fans. The foreseeable future lasted two days.

Are you telling me that Eddie had not been previously interviewed or sounded out for the job and that Thursday 13th January was the first time Burnley had made an approach. Mm!

Just hope Burnley keep their hands off our players.

If Sepp Blatter has taught us anything and I think we can agree he hasn't, it's that there is no place for video technology in football. I for one would like to see all football media in text. In fact I'd be very happy if MOTD was replaced by Ceefax, well, the Wigan games at least.

Steve, I'd like to know more about Garth Crooks. I suspect, were he to stay at your house, he would likely appear at your bedside around 4am wearing only crisp, white Calvin Kleins whispering 'Where's the Yakult Steve? Where's the Yakult?'

    I'm close, right?

Steve, I'm sure you'd much rather have serious football question, so:

Do you agree that Leighton Baines is at the very least, England's second best left-back and should have gone to South Africa? He can defend, attack and deliver set pieces. Has anyone even mentioned Stephen Warnock this season?

in response to BlueUnderground, why bring Stephen Leighton Baines into the equation? why would you take him to a world cup? he has zero sex appeal, i would of taken Ryan Blake of Brenford FC, he is gorgeous.

As a deaf football supporter, I strongly object to the BBC discriminating against us by replacing written blogs with video that we can't access due to lack of subtitles. Can someone at the BBC explain this thoughtless 'progress' and dissuade me from using the Disability Discrimination Act to sue the BBC. My license fee payment contributes to your funds and then you cut me and 4.5 million deaf and hard of hearing people from access. If you really want to hold on to your subsidised public service broadcaster status you should do better than this!

I was really surprised when Eddie decided to leave Bournemouth. He is still a very young and inexperienced manager - not taking away any credit due to him for the wonderful job he did at the club. I would have thought that he had plenty of time before making such a move. If he had successfully taken AFC into the Championship this year, then surely his value would have doubled or trebled. Anyway who really cares - we have just beaten Brighton and gone second in the league. Well done to the team.

    Steve,

I think this blog would be good if it wasn't so horrendously biased towards the championship. This week's episode was entirely championship related talking points, and the tiny tiny clip about oxlade chamberlain is supposed to represent fair coverage of the football league is it?
Last week in the description, it said something about Eddie Howe, will he stay or will he go? I watched the entire episode just to hear what you had to say on that matter, being a Bournemouth fan, and after listening to you talk about championship issues for 5 minutes you had nothing constructive or analytical even to say about the situation. You spent 5 seconds on the topic and added nothing to the situation that was not already common knowledge, which is a disgrace to Bournemouth fans to be honest given what he has done for the club. This week, the same again, talking about Eddie Howe at the Burnley job and I was bitterly disappointed with what you had to say and the length of time you committed to that topic when compared with every other topic covered. God knows if any league two club supporters watch this colossal waste of time but I'd hazard a guess that they don't. Sort it out..
