Have you heard a cuckoo?

Post categories:

Martin Hughes-Games Martin Hughes-Games | 16:57 UK time, Thursday, 28 May 2009

It's one of the defining sounds of the spring. The simple echoing call of the cuckoo which marks its return to the UK from its wintering ground in Africa. This call has become embedded into our culture and is as much a part of the British spring as village cricket, freshly cut grass and bank holiday traffic jams.

cuckoo_blog_2.jpgBut the sight and sound of the cuckoo is becoming a rare event. The RSPB's latest assessment of UK bird number reveals that cuckoo numbers are in dire decline
and nationally we have lost 37% in the last 15 years.

The causes behind the cuckoo's decline are not really understood but it's to do with its complex life cycle.

The cuckoo doesn't build its own nest. They lay their eggs in other's nests, with over 90% of them being laid in reed warbler, meadow pipit and dunnock nests. When the cuckoo chick hatches it pushes the hosts' chicks out of the nest and is fed by its trusting foster parents until it fledges. As soon as the chick fledges it begins an amazing journey to Africa which can be over 4000 miles long and take weeks to accomplish. They will stay in Africa for two thirds of their year before flying to us.

At every stage of its complex life cycle there are hurdles. Here in the UK some of the host species are in decline, some important food sources such as caterpillar moths are also in steep decline and there is the constant threat of habitat loss. Outside of the UK weather pattern changes may be affecting their migration and food shortages in their wintering grounds.

We have had huge fun with our strange birds nest challenge, thanks so much, but this request is much more serious. We and the British Trust for Ornithology really need your help to get an up to date snapshot of how the cuckoos are doing this year.

So please tell us where AND when you have seen or heard one.

This is an important Springwatch survey - thank you very much for your help.

Update Sunday 31st May
Well we're overwhelmed by your response. It's Sunday afternoon and we're ploughing our way through your 8000+ replies. Hoping to have something to show you on the show on Monday.

Update Wednesday 3rd June
We're on track processing all your cuckoo sightings, to have something to show you before the show finishes and to pass the data to the BTO for a fuller analysis.

Update Monday 15th June
If you didn't see Thursday's show, the BTO have created a fantastic map using your sightings. You can zoom into your local area to have a better look.

On Tuesday 26th May heard and then saw a cuckoo next to the old railway line at Stanwick Lakes, East Northamptonshire. This was a little way from the visitor centre. We also saw the cuckoo flying which is quite distinctive.

Previous to that we heard our first cuckoo about 2-3 weeks ago. This was as were were walking along the same old railway track bed (now a cycling/walking track). This was in the area near to the site of the old Ringstead railway station, near Woodford Mill, East Northamptonshire.

At around the same time we heard a cuckoo close to our house, Avenue Road, near Rushden, East Northants. In previous years we have always heard at least one cuckoo further down our road. However, a new house house has been built in the area that that we have always heard it and we have not heard one in that area this year.

I have found that it is possible to closely mimic the cuckoos call, and engage an unwitting cuckoo in 'conversation'.

The Cuckoo/s arrived mid April so I have been listening to them for roughly six weeks now. I know there are two of them and I actually saw them together last Monday 25th May. I tried to get some photos and managed to get one but it's not very good. The sighting was in Withybed Bottom north of Highland Water and Puckpits Inclosures. Jx

Have seen cuckoo once this year and heard one on two other occasions in Little Wenham, just south of Ipswich - can't remember dates exactly but all have been within the past three weeks or so. One was at 4 a.m. when there was a massive storm - I heard it for about ten minutes through the heavy rain. One thing: if the decline in cuckoos is attributable in part to the decline of meadow pipits, dunnocks etc., then surely we should be doing all we can to improve their habitats. It certainly wouldn't hurt... On a totally unrelated matter, we saw an otter this weekend on the Mere at Thorpeness - my first. Also saw a Grey Plover (summer plumage) at Titchwell. Finally, seeing the merlins yesterday reminded me of a trip to Iceland a few years ago when I saw a Gyr Falcon - the largest falcon in Europe, I believe - and a few minutes later saw a family of Merlin - the smallest. A real champagne moment. Apologies for the length and irrelevance of this post.

We have several cuckoos visiting our farm in northern Dordogne (France, 24340) that have visited us for several years. They are here from early March cuckooing all day; not just for brief periods = they are probably as fed up with Britain as the rest of us Brits out here, even though the weather recently has been far wetter than the UK!

Road kills and the dramatic increase in the domestic cat population in UK are responsible for a significant reduction in some bird species. Multiply the estimated current population by the Australian figures for number birds killed per annum = 8 billion birds killed by cats per year = no solution?!

The whole wildlife ecosystem here in rural France is better than I remember in post-war UK, with more species.

I have heard the cuckoo at 8.30 this morning and I live in Wareham Dorset. It is a bit later this year I hope they find a reed warblers nest in time. I am a member of the RSPB and all sorts of wildlife around us.

I heard a Cuckoo about a week ago in my opposite neighbours' garden nesting in the trees. It was a delightful sound, I had no idea the Cuckoo was on the RSPB Red List!

I heard the first Cuckoo on 13th April here in Godshill, New Forest. They have been here ever since, seemingly as numerous as last year. Saw a hen last Friday being chased by a "LBJ" straight past me.

I first heard the Cuckoo in mid April in the village of South Barrow, near Castle Cary in Somerset.I then heard another three weeks later in a more remote area of the village. We also have a Starling (with two of her young)putting her head through the wire of the guinea pig run to pinch the Guinea pig food.A comical sight.

Walking along the sea defences at Seasalter Kent on Sunday 24th May at around 3.30pm I heard my first cuckoo of the year. There is a small copse of trees across the fields and it must have been there. Fantastic!
