Have you heard a cuckoo?

Post categories:

Martin Hughes-Games Martin Hughes-Games | 16:57 UK time, Thursday, 28 May 2009

It's one of the defining sounds of the spring. The simple echoing call of the cuckoo which marks its return to the UK from its wintering ground in Africa. This call has become embedded into our culture and is as much a part of the British spring as village cricket, freshly cut grass and bank holiday traffic jams.

cuckoo_blog_2.jpgBut the sight and sound of the cuckoo is becoming a rare event. The RSPB's latest assessment of UK bird number reveals that cuckoo numbers are in dire decline
and nationally we have lost 37% in the last 15 years.

The causes behind the cuckoo's decline are not really understood but it's to do with its complex life cycle.

The cuckoo doesn't build its own nest. They lay their eggs in other's nests, with over 90% of them being laid in reed warbler, meadow pipit and dunnock nests. When the cuckoo chick hatches it pushes the hosts' chicks out of the nest and is fed by its trusting foster parents until it fledges. As soon as the chick fledges it begins an amazing journey to Africa which can be over 4000 miles long and take weeks to accomplish. They will stay in Africa for two thirds of their year before flying to us.

At every stage of its complex life cycle there are hurdles. Here in the UK some of the host species are in decline, some important food sources such as caterpillar moths are also in steep decline and there is the constant threat of habitat loss. Outside of the UK weather pattern changes may be affecting their migration and food shortages in their wintering grounds.

We have had huge fun with our strange birds nest challenge, thanks so much, but this request is much more serious. We and the British Trust for Ornithology really need your help to get an up to date snapshot of how the cuckoos are doing this year.

So please tell us where AND when you have seen or heard one.

This is an important Springwatch survey - thank you very much for your help.

Update Sunday 31st May
Well we're overwhelmed by your response. It's Sunday afternoon and we're ploughing our way through your 8000+ replies. Hoping to have something to show you on the show on Monday.

Update Wednesday 3rd June
We're on track processing all your cuckoo sightings, to have something to show you before the show finishes and to pass the data to the BTO for a fuller analysis.

Update Monday 15th June
If you didn't see Thursday's show, the BTO have created a fantastic map using your sightings. You can zoom into your local area to have a better look.

There is a cuckoo in my garden in North Yorkshire, which comes and quite happily clears out my my bird box every morning. It first appeared a few weeks ago as a chick with a blackbird that has been feeding it was if it was it's own. Now it must be twice the size of the blackbird! It is also becoming quite tame and will happily jump onto the windowsill looking in at me wanting more food. I have taken some photos which I will upload.

The cuckoo arrived in my part of essex early this year, its usually around the 20th April when first to be heard, but it was 15th.this year. Can be heard every morning (early) but i have noticed the lack of females. With regard to the rhyme' the cuckoo comes in april, it sings its song in may, in the middle of june it whistles a tune and july it flies away'; this refers to the change in the song of the male bird, not the difference between male and female. In June the call changes from a clear 'cuckoo' to a 'cuck cuck cuck cuck-oo'. Well, roughly!- but it definitely changes!

In past years we've had a cuckoo flying through the garden at some speed and we actually mistook it for a bird of prey. A previous close up sighting was by the coast in France (not far from La Rochelle) sitting on a fence post and totally ignoring us - cool as you like. I love to hear the call - it's magical.

On Springwatch tonight you mentioned the rhyme which says the cuckoo "changes his tune" in June. This has always seemed to me like the same bird just getting his rhythm wrong; it sounds like "cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo, cook ...." breaking off in mid sentence!

The rhyme about the cuckoo changing its tune in June I was taught at primary school. It is supposedly to do with the musical interval between the 2 notes, which starts as nearly a fourth (like a diesel train) and later reduces to around a minor third. Perhaps an expert can confirm this, from memory it seems to be true.

We have visited during May for the last 4 or 5 years, and ALWAYS hear this splendid bird during our stay. We have caught glimpses of it (them? are there more than one?) on several occasions; usually in flight, but on just one occasion perched in a nearby tree - very distinctive. Our most recent 'hearing' was on 18th and 19th May this year.

I studied cuckoos as part of my degree dissertation on birds in medieval literature. They have always been recognised as harbingers of spring, as shown in the short early Middle English song 'Sing Cuccu'. There was a medieval belief that if one could catch a cuckoo the summer could be prevented from leaving; small copses were maintained in the hope of luring cuckoos that coud be caught and immured within them.

I haven't heard a cuckoo for the past eight years since moving to Rushden from Irchester, two miles away (Northamptonshire, but always heard it every year when living in various areas of the country till then. As I am a country person I find this rather sad - like everyone else I feel the cuckoo is part of an English Spring.

I heard the rhyme on Springwatch about the cuckoo - the one I learnt around 60 years ago was slightly different at the end:

    The cuckoo comes in April,
He sings his song in May,
In June he changes his tune,
In July he's ready to fly.
    In August go he must.

N.B: I was always taught that when the cuckoo changed his tune it was from "cuck-oo" to "cuck-cuck-oo."

I heard and actually managed to see 2 cuckoos over the past 2 weeks. First was in Glengoulandie, up on the hill above the little village, near Aberfeldy in Perthshire. This was on Tues 19 May.
Then, on Fri 29 May was walking around Loch Ordie, just north of Blairgowrie, to the east of the A9, heard a cuckoo for a while then spotted it high up in a tree by the lochside. Got the binos on it, fine male.
I must say though that I have visited Cannich, approx 13 miles inland (west)from Loch Ness on the same weekend in April for the past 8 years, this was the first I've not been woken up in my tent with the sound of the cuckoo, very disappointing. Hope they eventually arrived

We've been hearing him for about the last couple of weeks now and it's an absolute delight as always. Up to this year we had a 'regular' cuckoo every spring whom we always recognised as he had a kind of speech defect and part of his call was always 'back to front'! We miss him - and he was always up early!

We have lived in Knaphill, Surrey for over 25 years. We hear a cuckoo from our garden every May and this year was no exception. We have never seeen the bird but its call is all the more intriguing as a result. It's natural to smile and feel good at the sound. Even though you already know it's spring, it's a feel-good factor, an acknowledgement that all is well when the cuckoo calls and it's always comforting to know that a local cuckoo has survived the winter despite the odds.

Having not heard a cuckoo all year so far, and getting very worried about the potential loss of them, thismorning at 7.15 am we not only heard one, but we saw it too, working its way along the trees on the bridleway at the back of our house. Along with our neighbours, we were all out in dressing gowns & slippers clutching binoculars. It was put up from one tree by the resident magpies, and I had a good glimpse of it flying to its next perch to cuckoo some more. We just hope that if it is looking for a mate it hasn't missed the boat - is there still any chance of breeding now?
